Re: data graphing ideas?

Mario

I think you're on the right track.
the Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator employs:
• Graph functions and trace points made accessible with speech and audible tone.
• Listen to entire graph, including special sounds for negative regions and axis crossing points.

if you want to check it out for more ideas:
https://shop.aph.org/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_Orion%20TI-84%20Plus%20Talking%20Graphing%20Calculator_1-07340-00P_10001_11051

since you're an experienced programmer, you're more enabled to "make it so". but remember, newbie wanna be scriptwriters need to start from the bottom of the barrel... have you ever considered to join the JAWS scripting ml? not to shew you away from this ml, but you can pose more technical questions about scripting snafoos to get assistance from other experienced sdcripters.

Presenting data to blind and visually impaired users seems like a mostly
uninvestigated area, wide open for new research. There is an annual academic
conference called IEEE Vis: http://ieeevis.org/. Historically, their focus
is to present new research in different ways to visualize data. As far as I
know, they have never bitten off the challenge of presenting data in
non-visual ways. But if you have any pull in the academic community, perhaps
you could get some grad students to research ways to display data
non-visually, with the end-goal of getting their research published through
this conference.

Just thinking off the top of my head, I could imagine a bar chart with items
left-to-right (along the x axis) and values along the y axis. We could use
JAWS to read the value for each item, but instead of just reading numbers,
modulate the JAWS speech pitch in accordance with the value: larger values
would be read with a higher pitch, smaller values with a lower pitch. So,
instead of just hearing a bunch of numbers, you'd hear pitch changes with
each number that would allow the user to immediately place the value
relative to other values. The pitch changes would give you a "picture" of
the values relative to each other.

I'm sure that's a pretty naive approach, but as far as I know, no one has
tried it yet. It might be an interesting challenge for the JAWS scripting
language.

Hi again, Adrian. Another thing to check is to open Internet Explorer. Then go into Quick Settings with JawsKey plus the letter V as in Victor, arrow down to General Options. About six or seven options down, you will find one which says:
Recognize Flash Movies.

This should be checked. This is done with the Space Bar. Once this is checked, Tab to OK and press Enter.

Hi. In the past week or two, I no longer get sound on YouTube when using IE11. I do get sound on YouTube with Firefox, but I'm experiencing problems with FF and want to keep IE as my default. Any ideas? Here's what I can add.

In Firefox, JAWS detects You tube's volume slider. It does not do so when I have IE11 loaded.

With YouTube running on IE, I open the "Adjust system volume" dialog and tab over until IE is verbalized. The volume level is at 72%. The next tab takes me to a button that says "unmute," implying volume is muted in IE. I press enter, the dialog disappears, but still no sound. (all the while I have a lengthy item playing in YouTube.)

Sound is working in every other application.

So, again, any ideas?

Bluetooth Keyboard Recommendations

Robbie Curtis

Hi Everyone,

Recently a friend of mine purchased a Microsoft Surface tablet for which she is planning to use at school. She and I have been searching for the right bluetooth keyboard to work with it. I have seen that some of you have the MS Surface Pro and I am wondering which keyboard you are using.

All suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Volume for YouTube in IE

Mario

could the volume in the youtube player be muted? usually, there is a button that's labeled mute for when the video is playing. it might be changed to unmute set by the author, in which you'd have to change it back to mute, so the audio portion plays. also it might be that the video does not have any audio, hence a silent video.

Stan and all:

I finally got the safely remove option to work. I think my problem was that
I was not hitting enter when on the notification chevron.

I can now get to an option which says safely remove or eject. I assume that
if I hit enter on this, I'll be given a choice of drives, and can hit enter
and remove the one I no longer need. Am I correct in assuming that this
option will work for either a USB thumb drive, or an external hard drive?

Thanks to all for your patience as I've sorted all of this out.

hit enter. I then get two options, one of which is safely remove.By the way,
if you do not have a device connected at the time, there will not be a

I'm not finding the safe to remove option in my system tray when I access it

I'm using Jaws 16 with Windows 7 here.

I suppose I could just use the eject option in windows explorer via the
application key and down arrows. But I'm now hearing that there is a
difference between safely removing and ejecting a device.

I'd like to find a single safe to remove option for removing a thumb drive

I got the impression that Tom's system tray isn't showing the "safely
remove" option. If that's the case, Tom, you might post again with that
specific question. Several sets of instructions have been posted in the past
on how to get JAWS to reveal it.

Dave, I've heard much the same thing. But, ever nervous about corrupting
files, I do the following:

Close the window showing the drive of the SD card, etc., that I want to
remove. (This is consistent with your closing all applications using that
card, disc, etc.)

Go to system tray with JAWS key+F11.

Press s until "system tray" is verbalized. On my system (Win7, 64-bit),
that's just one press.

Press enter, then arrow down until the name of the item to be removed is
spoken. Press enter again.

Then JAWS verbalizes something like "Safe to remove" and I feel comfortable
ejecting the item.

Tom,

I've only used it once, and found it irritating and useless. When I copy or
paste to a USB Thumb drive, I just wait until I'm able to navigate through
the list of files on that drive, and then I know I can pull it out.

If you're using an external disc or hard drive, you might want to make sure
that there are no programs running that are accessing the drive before
disconnecting -- that might be the one and only time I'd consider using the
feature. Use JAWS+F11 to get to the system tray, arrow to "safe to remove"
item and press enter.

Hello, everyone.

I am sure this may seem pretty elementary to some, but I actually have
gotten varying opinions on the need to use the "safely remove hardware"
option for USB devices such as USB thumb drives, and USB external hard
drives.

So, I have two questions:

1. Is it still necessary to invoke the "safely remove hardware" option
when using any of these USB devices? I have heard that in later operating
systems like Windows 7, this is not as necessary as it used to be.

And

2. How does one easily get to the "safely remove hardware" option, if
it would be a good idea for me to use it?

I am using Windows 7 and Jaws 16 here.

Thank you!

For those who do not know about File Scavenger, it is a file recovery program, which works well with JAWS.

My problem is, I stupidly deleted a folderfrom one of my hard drives. I have not done anything to the drive since I performed my stupid mistake.

Now, of course, I would like to use File Scavenger to recover the deleted folder and the deleted files inside the folder.

In the edit field which JAWS speaks as:

Search for: edit

there is a star/asterisk in the edit field by default.

What do I need to type into the edit field for File Scavenger to search for the deleted folder and files, and nothing else.

The deleted folder, is called MP3. And, it is in the rroot of the drive.

Any and all help will be mery much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Control V, which is to copy - then you'll have Sonny's e-mail address.

It works! Smooth as silk. I don't even have to open the email, or press
control-n for new contact. Awesome!

OK, Keith. If I hit escape, I'm outside your message. So,
right there, I hit Control C; then Control 3 (to get to Contacts); then

this, it is better to do it the old way to Alt 1 to the To field, copy
it, start a new e-mail just to have a place to get out the < and > and
list
stuff, just get yours.
But if you get an individual one, or you can even try with mine to
Escape, then hit Control C, then Control 3, then Control V. Then you'll
have the e-mail address. I did it with yours, and then deleted it;
somehow or other I deleted it twice, but it's out. Anyway, that is one
way that it can be done in Outlook 2013.

The good thing about the older harder way, I think, is a little more
control of the data.

Ann, I did as I was instructed yesterday - went outside your message,
hit Control C for copy, then Control 3 for Contacts, then Control V for

Your address is in my contacts, which I will delete, but my instructor

That it's in the applications/context list means it's an MS control,

I do SHIFT + TAB back to the From field. Once I get there, I hit

It

Are there any members on this list, using File Scavenger with JAWS?

Dave Durber

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Re: Custom Radio Station Website that works with JAWS

HAMILTON

Have you tried Tune In Radio? I have played with it a bit, and find that
you can do more than what you described in your online radio experience.
You can set favourites, which makes it easier to find the stations you
really want to hear. Personally, I mostly listen to an all Pink Floyd
station from somewhere in South America.

Good luck.

I had found Jango.com which is supposed to let you create your own
custom radio stations, and I kinda liked it, except that it has been a
struggle to use it with JAWS. Many of the buttons are unlabeled, so it's
hit or miss whether I can do what I want on any given day or in any
given browser. I never could figure out how to create custom stations in
it, although the instructions make it sound idiotproof. The most I could
ever do was type in an artist's name, and see what came on as a result.
I forgot my password tonight, and I wanted to recover it so I could use
it at work. There was no way for me to change it without knowing the old
one, so I logged out in order to say "I forgot my password". Now I can't
get the login prompt to come up. I'm completely over it and undone.

Is anybody familiar with a similar website that actually works with
JAWS? I've never used Pandora, Spotify, etc. I'm not a fan of I Heart
Radio for many reasons. Any recommendations out there?

Windows b takes you to the system tray.
Windows key m = minimize which still places you on the desktop, and the
other keystroke is windows key d. If you press windows key d again, it will
take you to the recently access application, to do that with windows key m,
just add shift to it.

I had found Jango.com which is supposed to let you create your own custom radio stations, and I kinda liked it, except that it has been a struggle to use it with JAWS. Many of the buttons are unlabeled, so it's hit or miss whether I can do what I want on any given day or in any given browser. I never could figure out how to create custom stations in it, although the instructions make it sound idiotproof. The most I could ever do was type in an artist's name, and see what came on as a result. I forgot my password tonight, and I wanted to recover it so I could use it at work. There was no way for me to change it without knowing the old one, so I logged out in order to say "I forgot my password". Now I can't get the login prompt to come up. I'm completely over it and undone.

Is anybody familiar with a similar website that actually works with JAWS? I've never used Pandora, Spotify, etc. I'm not a fan of I Heart Radio for many reasons. Any recommendations out there?

Subject: key stroke for desk top

I believe I have seen the keystroke for getting to desk top but cannot find it now. When I minimize, I get start menu first and then desk top, and wish to go straight to desk top. Does anybody know what this shortcut is?
