Windows 10 and All apps window

paul lemm

Hi,

So just a quick windows 10 question. So in windows 10 the 'all programs '
option in the start menu has changed to the 'all apps' option. However
in windows 7 and older versions when in the all programs/apps window you
could either use the arrow keys to move up and down or type the first letter
of the program you wanted and it would then take you to programs of
which ever letter you pressed, so for example pressing J would take you to
the jaws program. In windows 10 although you can still move about with the
arrow keys you can't seem to go to a program by typing its first letter.
Does anyone know is there a setting that I can change in windows 10 so I
can use first letter navigation to get round in the all apps window?

Paul

Subject: RE: Problem with New JAWS v16.0.4463 and Outlook 2010

Hi Larry. Thanks for your suggestions, but no luck on my end. I'm on a
Windows 7 64bit system, not Windows 10, so I'm not sure what other things
our computers have in common besides Office 2010.

I don't care to use the JAWS virtual riggon UI in Outlook because, in my
experience, it behaves unpredictably sometimes, so I keep that turned off.
But, regardless of whether I have it off or on, I still have the issue with
reading my message list.

My plan is to see if FS email support comes through for me, which means I'll
do nothing with this for the next few days. Then, as a plan B, I'll try the
JAWS v17 beta. I have two upgrades available in my SMA, so hopefully this
issue does not find its way into a future JAWS release.

Let's keep each other (and the list) updated as we find out more about this.

Hi Paul

I regret I am not having much success with the latest JAWS16 version:
J16.0.4463enu-x64.exe

However, I am having better success with the prior JAWS16 version:
J16.0.4350enu-x64.exe
and the latest new JAWS17 beta test version:
J17.0.806enu-x64.exe

I am testing JAWS and Outlook 2010 on a Windows 10 Dell desktop PC and
a Windows 10 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 PC.

The results vary depending on some of the JAWS and Outlook 2010 settings.
In case you have not yet had the occasion, maybe try experimenting
with the settings.

1. Sometimes, but rarely, checking and unchecking the:
"quick setting Outlook 2010 dialog" (InsertV) then down arrow to:
"Virtual ribbon menu"
will result with JAWS announcing what I need spoken out:
the subject title header information along with the 3 preview Outlook
information lines below each email entry.

2. This is important.
For some unknown reason so far, I speculate, maybe JAWS is more
synchronized with the Outlook Screen, when I use the keystrokes:

- pressing the Alt key to land on the virtual ribbon home tab
- then the left arrow to the file tab
- then the right arrow to return to the home tab
- the escape key to return from the virtual ribbon

3. I make sure the virtual ribbon is maximized although it does not
seem
to
matter so far.

- Alt key to the virtual ribbon home tab
- right arrow until landing on"
"minimize the ribbon button"
- then make sure the ribbon is unchecked

Paul, unfortunately, if you are unable to get a upgrade of JAWS, the
success
I am experiencing so far is directly connected to either a prior or
next upcoming version of JAWS.
If you like, try changing these settings and see if you can get your
system
running more smoothly.
Otherwise, you might want to try out the latest beta test version of
JAWS
.
I believe although I stand being corrected, you can install the beta
version
of Jaws 17 using the current JAWS 16 SMA license.
If you find JAWS 17 is more satisfactory, and you can afford it, you
might consider plunging into the latest JAWS 17 version.
In this case, it is possible to alternate using two JAWS version
between JAWS 16 and JAWS 17 whenever you need to use different features of
JAWS.
Good luck, Larry

Hi Paul. I too, prefer using the "show as conversations" option.
I will try out the "-cleanviews" option tomorrow as FS suggests but as you
mentioned, I believe it will not be as convenient.
I also like to get JAWS to not announce anything but the "subject"
information to each email through the use of the "Customize Outlook message
list" feature.
Then after changing one of the Outlook setting to "preview", I am able to
review all email message very quickly.
The latest version of JAWS gets a bit confused with all I am asking it to do
with all the settings mentioned above.
No matter, I will give it a try tomorrow knowing this will take me a bit of
time trouble shooting.
I have not received a response from FS yet but I suppose they too, are a bit
confused with what I am asking JAWS to do.
Thanks so much for the update.
Regards, Larry

Hi Larry. I heard back from FS support, but their reply was not helpful.
They advised launching outlook with the "-cleanviews" option, which
essentially resets all the views for all the folders. This resolves the
problem, sort of, because it has the side effect of clearing the "show as
conversations" checkbox. But as soon as I manually check that checkbox, the
problem manifests itself again - message info is not read when arrowing
through the list of messages.

So the problem (on my system at least) is specific to the "show as
conversation" checkbox being selected.

I've written back to FS support with this info in the hopes that they can
provide a fix for the issue.

Regrettably, I have similar problems. I had to go back and install the
previous JAWS version to be able to review this email thread and be
allowed to use the enter key to get into this email message and
respond to this problem.

I will be writing a note to the Freedom Scientific technical support
team and hope they may be able to help out.

Thanks for everyone's continued help with this issue.

It is not a problem with the Outlook window being minimized. The
behavior is the same whether the window is maximized or "restored".

I also played around with the "Customize Outlook Message List" JAWS
manager, a very cool little tool that I hadn't heard of before, and
again no luck.
Regardless of how I configured this, I still got the same incorrect
behavior.

But I finally figured out a workaround. In the "View" tab of the
ribbon
UI,
I have to uncheck "Show as Conversation". Once I do that, everything
reads correctly. But if I have that checked, then nothing is read as I
arrow
down
through my message list. This is not an ideal workaround, as I rather
like to have messages grouped by conversation, but at least I can
access my email again.

I guess my next thing to try would be to completely uninstall JAWS
including
my own custom settings, then reinstall, and see if that resolves this
issue.
After all, no one else is encountering this problem, so it must be
something
specific to my system.

Thanks, all. I consider this closed, and J Bron can go ahead and
hijack
this
thread now if he wants to. <grin>

Paul,

This behavior reminds me of the times I've somehow minimalized
Outlook 2010. If this is the problem, the solution is to focus on
the Outlook
window,
press alt-space, then x for maximize.

For what it's worth, even though the problem arose after
installation of a JAWS update and this action apparently caused the
change, it doesn't sound like a JAWS issue.
