Is there not a way in JAWS to "deselect" a specific item in a list? Once
you find this in Keyboard Manager", you could "deselect" the item/e-mail you
want to keep, and press "delete" to get rid of every item/e-mail, except the
1 you do not want to keep.

Yes, I completely slipped that factoid.
Then we can also select noncontiguous emails with CTRL spacebar and only
delete what I would like right?
You seem like a smart fella and the conversation view I like as I can
quickly delete emails that I have no interest in, even though CTRL A works,
but we are back to if there is an email in that conversation I'd like to
keep.
Back on schedule, I will research more to see how to make it work the way
I'd like.

Actually, it wouldn't take any time at all to delete all the emails. All you
must do is to go to the list of emails in the particular folder, press
CONTROL plus the letter A to select all the emails, then press delete, and
they will all be gone, no matter whether you are in conversation thread mode
or not.

I know where it is at. Originally it was on ascending.
I'm not thinking its you and not "explaining" well, instead I think
there is more to it. I'm thinking the ascending/descending not
working applies to the emails in this case in the conversation view.
I wonder if it will work if I removed the conversation view, but that
would take 40 days and 40 nights to delete all the emails I have
coming in lol.

Did you press Alt V, V, S and then Tab to Sort. I had a problem about
arrowing and tabbing, but arrowing got me to Sort, I believe, then
Tabbing got me to the Option, where Ascending and Descending were. On
mine, Descending was checked; I checked Ascending. Right now I am not
good enough in Outlook 2013 to give the clearest instructions, but it
is annoying, if you want your messages with the oldest first and are
getting them with the newest first. I hope you can get it done this
time.

Best from,

Carolyn

P.S. Kimsan, I tried while in an e-mail, but that command in a message
runs Spell Check like F 7. I thought I'd check it before sending. I
did find out that that first V puts you on the upper Ribbon, so when
you get to the S, Tab to Assending and Descending.

If you want your newest e-mail on top, Hit Insert V plus V plus S,
that is for sort. Tab through the fields. If you check desdending, the
newest one will be on top. If you check ascending like I do, your
oldest one will be on top. Tab to OK. Isn't that grand? You could do
that in OE too, but I have forgotten how, would have to fool around in

Using outlook 2013, when having emails grouped in conversations, I'm
wondering is it duable to have the latest reply at the top?

Let me give an example.

On this other list, there is a conversation with 40 emails, but when a
reply comes in, I have to go to the email in the conversation it's
replying to in order to read it.

That could be like email number 26 and that is tons of down arrowing;
however, with outlook 2013 there is the unread button to list all of
your unread emails but just wondering if what I'm trying to ask is
possible.

JAWS 16 is working fairly well with Windows 10 on my laptop. It's certainly
much more than minimal. If JAWS 16 latest build isn't working well for you,
you need to uninstall and reinstall it. It will work much better after that.

Hello to new Windows 10 users,

I just upgraded my 5 year old laptop to Windows 10. It had Windows 7 and
it had a WiFi connection so I didn't need to figure out how to make a
net connection.

I chose to upgrade preserving all the existing files and applications.
That part worked.

Now some notes to keep in mind.

The current version of JAWS 16 works minimally. The latest version of
NVDA 2015.3 works much better.

To the person asking the question. How did you get JAWS into your new
laptop? Install NVDA 2015.3 to get more use out of Windows 10 until JAWS
16 and 17 come out.

In Windows 10, the Windows key + i will bring up the setting list. But
JAWS might not help.

I am guessing, the sheveron button (system tray) might give a connection
path. Press the Windows-logo key and then close the start menu with ESCAPE.

Then tab to the sheveron button and then arrow down or right. There
might be a network item to select.

Opening the start menu by pressing the Windows logo key will have the
edit field. JAWS 16 will not announce this. NVDA does and with NVDA you
can arrow down through a list. JAWS 16 cannot do this.

Maybe other Windows 10 users will have more advice.

Re: office 365

You can create an "unread" folder for unread mail. This collects unread email from all folders where you direct email. I haven't done it in a while, but you'll find instructions via Google.

Oh, I'm using Outlook 2010, but I'd be surprised if this very useful feature were omitted from 2013.

That was most interesting, and we may get it here before I hang it up. I was thinking you were having trouble with Office in general; I don't use Outlook in my home installation. In fact, until I quit procrastinating, I don't have much of an e-mail setup right now.

I think Outlook 2013 is a good system. I just have a lot to learn with the ribbon concept and all, coming from Outlook Express. I think Outlook is superior to Outlook Express. I have had it for three weeks and realize that I had OE for 11 years and did not learn it over night.

You can hit Control Y and go to various boxes. Control 3 takes you directly to Contacts; Control 1 or Control Shift I will take you back to Inbox. Also you can hit Control Y then I to go back to it. One thing that I liked better about OE is that it might say, 50 messages, 44 unread. With this, you just get the unread, and you can't hit Control U to get to them. You have to arrow to them. Joseph that helped me got it fixed where that the unread message does not go away when I arrow through lists to get to personal messages. It has Favorites. That is, that you Control Tab, and there you have a list of your boxes, Calendar, Journal, Notes, etc. I have tried to get a book on it, but the library has none. I understand there is one for $80, which I would not be purchasing at this point, since I just bought computer, JAWS upgrades then had to replace hearing aids.

A good working set up with it is the contacts. When writing an e-mail, when you are in the address fields, To, cc, or bcc, you press Alt Period, and the contact list appears like it does for a sighted person. You must arrow through names, and when you see the name you want, hit enter. Go through the list until you have them, then press enter twice.

As far as I know, with attachments, you get on the document you want to attach and press Control C to copy it. You go back to Outlook, enter your contact(s), go to Subject, and then paste the copy in the body. That is way different than I have had, where I could pull up a directory, go to the item I wanted to attach and press Enter.

I don't know how to work in the extra features, but have listed some appointments in Calendar.

Joseph the Free Tech guy from another list has spent a lot of time getting me to the point where I am.

There is one section called notes. It could work for me, when I'm on the phone taking information. Then I could work on it and either file it else where or use it in an e-mail, if I want. That is a good place to store shipping information, etc.

I have set up a box though called All mine, where I park e-mails like that with tracking number and that sort of information.

I set up a box called Keepers, where I have stored tutorial information regarding Outlook and Office 2013.

I set up a box for one of my lists, but must have missed a step, because nothing was coming to my Inbox and everything going there, so I had to move everything out of that one and just delete the box. To do that, you Control Tab to Favorites and arrow to the box and hit Delete.

I hope this rambling gives you a tiny glimpse of Outlook. Me telling you about is about like me describing how the new car models look this year.

Best from,

Carolyn

From memory, I log in, I don't find a settings link, or anything when using the jaws curser, but there is this button menu to press for settings an aps.
I click that, I tab over to general, it expands, then I see the light version and press enter on it. Then it freezes.

Re: using jaws16 with windows10?

I can't imagine why we would want some $s and not others, but it's a good
example. Another trick, and this one goes back a while, is to use the
dictionary, particularly on an app-by-app basis. For instance, I taught my
Bible not to speak colons, which appeared between chapter and verse numbers,
but seemingly nowhere else. I tried the same trick with single-quote
apostrophes, but then found that contractions didn't read properly. Come to
think of it, that might be a good test of custom punctuation.

Howdy All,

This is a note on the difference between changing punctuation settings in
Jaws options, Insert + V, & customize punctuation in the default settings
center / configuration manager. They work backwards from one another.

When setting punctuation in Jaws options / quick settings, this controls the
amount of punctuation JAWS will speak / recognize. The default setting is
most. To hear less punctuation spoken you would select some or none.

When making changes in the customize punctuation list, this basically tells
Jaws how much of a selected punctuation mark to ignore. If you do not want
Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to choose the
" all " selection. You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down
through. They are none, some, most, & all. In these selections they work
backwards than what you would think. For example; If you choose " none "
for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in
whatever you are reading. On the other hand, if you choose the " all "
radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs.

Hope this helps some of you understand the differences between the 2
punctuation setting options.

Take care.

1. Press, Insert + F2, to open the Jaws Manager.
2. Goto Keyboard Manager and press enter.
3. Navigate to Default, & then tab 1 time to get into the list of options.
4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level If
it says none. That means there has not been a keystroke assigned.
5. Press the Alt key to open the menues, & right arrow to Action. Then down
arrow to Add Keystroke, & press enter. Or press control + A which is the
shortcut for asigning a keystroke.
6. Insert a keystroke combination like control + dash for example. If the
combination is already being used for another command jaws will tell you.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used
in all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open
asking if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the
spacebar on the Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level. So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear the
punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

Take care.
Mike

Although this method involves a menu, it isn't onerous. Press JAWS key+v to
open the quick settings dialog. Then press p until JAWS verbalizes
"punctuation." On my system, it takes three presses of p once you arrow past

the edit field. Or you can type p in the edit field and three options
appear, the second of which is "punctuation." Press the spacebar to cycle
through the punctuation level choices, leave the one you want, tab to Okay
and press enter.

I don't know if a hotkey can be created for this operation.

Hi Everyone,
Is there any hot key that I can use, while I am reading something, turn
punctuation off and on, without going through any menus. Thanks.

Best from,

Carolyn

Hi,

Do you access your email via outlook.com?

If so, there is a lite version of the email interface which is just

check boxes, links end headings.

http://tinyurl.com/qzvs2y7

There is also an Outlook app for iOS which might work.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Niall

All I can do is navigate heading-by-heading, and at times I get

Reading the email, trying to forward, reply, even locating the send

just switched over to office 365, and I'm trying to check emails from

Take care.

I think the question is what changes do the different levels make? What are
the practical differences between all, some, most? Even none lets one or
two things slip through--the apostrophe, for example.

Hi Adrian & List Members,

Steps for, Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

Take care.

Is there not a way in JAWS to "deselect" a specific item in a list? Once
you find this in Keyboard Manager", you could "deselect" the item/e-mail you

Yes, I completely slipped that factoid.
Then we can also select noncontiguous emails with CTRL spacebar and only
delete what I would like right?
You seem like a smart fella and the conversation view I like as I can
quickly delete emails that I have no interest in, even though CTRL A works,
but we are back to if there is an email in that conversation I'd like to
keep.
Back on schedule, I will research more to see how to make it work the way

I'm not thinking its you and not "explaining" well, instead I think
there is more to it. I'm thinking the ascending/descending not

I wonder if it will work if I removed the conversation view, but that

Tabbing got me to the Option, where Ascending and Descending were. On

P.S. Kimsan, I tried while in an e-mail, but that command in a message

did find out that that first V puts you on the upper Ribbon, so when

Using outlook 2013, when having emails grouped in conversations, I'm
wondering is it duable to have the latest reply at the top?

Let me give an example.

On this other list, there is a conversation with 40 emails, but when a
reply comes in, I have to go to the email in the conversation it's
replying to in order to read it.

That could be like email number 26 and that is tons of down arrowing;
however, with outlook 2013 there is the unread button to list all of
your unread emails but just wondering if what I'm trying to ask is
possible.

Re: office 365

Carolyn Arnold <4carolyna@...>

I think Outlook 2013 is a good system. I just have a lot to learn with the
ribbon concept and all, coming from Outlook Express. I think Outlook is
superior to Outlook Express. I have had it for three weeks and realize that
I had OE for 11 years and did not learn it over night.

You can hit Control Y and go to various boxes. Control 3 takes you directly
to Contacts; Control 1 or Control Shift I will take you back to Inbox. Also
you can hit Control Y then I to go back to it. One thing that I liked better
about OE is that it might say, 50 messages, 44 unread. With this, you just
get the unread, and you can't hit Control U to get to them. You have to
arrow to them. Joseph that helped me got it fixed where that the unread
message does not go away when I arrow through lists to get to personal
messages. It has Favorites. That is, that you Control Tab, and there you
have a list of your boxes, Calendar, Journal, Notes, etc. I have tried to
get a book on it, but the library has none. I understand there is one for
$80, which I would not be purchasing at this point, since I just bought
computer, JAWS upgrades then had to replace hearing aids.

A good working set up with it is the contacts. When writing an e-mail, when
you are in the address fields, To, cc, or bcc, you press Alt Period, and the
contact list appears like it does for a sighted person. You must arrow
through names, and when you see the name you want, hit enter. Go through the
list until you have them, then press enter twice.

As far as I know, with attachments, you get on the document you want to
attach and press Control C to copy it. You go back to Outlook, enter your
contact(s), go to Subject, and then paste the copy in the body. That is way
different than I have had, where I could pull up a directory, go to the item
I wanted to attach and press Enter.

I don't know how to work in the extra features, but have listed some
appointments in Calendar.

Joseph the Free Tech guy from another list has spent a lot of time getting
me to the point where I am.

There is one section called notes. It could work for me, when I'm on the
phone taking information. Then I could work on it and either file it else
where or use it in an e-mail, if I want. That is a good place to store
shipping information, etc.

I have set up a box though called All mine, where I park e-mails like that
with tracking number and that sort of information.

I set up a box called Keepers, where I have stored tutorial information
regarding Outlook and Office 2013.

I set up a box for one of my lists, but must have missed a step, because
nothing was coming to my Inbox and everything going there, so I had to move
everything out of that one and just delete the box. To do that, you Control
Tab to Favorites and arrow to the box and hit Delete.

I hope this rambling gives you a tiny glimpse of Outlook. Me telling you
about is about like me describing how the new car models look this year.

Best from,

Carolyn

From memory, I log in, I don't find a settings link, or anything when using

I click that, I tab over to general, it expands, then I see the light

Re: using jaws16 with windows10?

Peter Tesar

Hello to new Windows 10 users,

I just upgraded my 5 year old laptop to Windows 10. It had Windows 7 and it had a WiFi connection so I didn't need to figure out how to make a net connection.

I chose to upgrade preserving all the existing files and applications. That part worked.

Now some notes to keep in mind.

The current version of JAWS 16 works minimally. The latest version of NVDA 2015.3 works much better.

To the person asking the question. How did you get JAWS into your new laptop? Install NVDA 2015.3 to get more use out of Windows 10 until JAWS 16 and 17 come out.

In Windows 10, the Windows key + i will bring up the setting list. But JAWS might not help.

I am guessing, the sheveron button (system tray) might give a connection path. Press the Windows-logo key and then close the start menu with ESCAPE.

Then tab to the sheveron button and then arrow down or right. There might be a network item to select.

Opening the start menu by pressing the Windows logo key will have the edit field. JAWS 16 will not announce this. NVDA does and with NVDA you can arrow down through a list. JAWS 16 cannot do this.

Maybe other Windows 10 users will have more advice.

Take care.

I think the question is what changes do the different levels make? What are
the practical differences between all, some, most? Even none lets one or
two things slip through--the apostrophe, for example.

Hi Adrian & List Members,

Steps for, Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

Take care.

I've done it myself a few times and they were very helpful.
I know it doesn't help accessibility but at least you can get what you want. Hope this helps a little.

Hi Tim: I wrote. Come on, folks, Tim's letter is good. You can modify it to address what your beef is. Mine was that when I want to order discs from a series, I can click on the series but not on the episodes themselves. I could never order disc 2, or 3, without sighted assistance. I haven't checked out the website too recently, but I've also chimed in on the audio description bit.

Subject: Contacting Netflix about accessibility issues.

Hi All,

I took Genni's advice, and called Netflix at 877-742-1480. As I expected, the person answering the general call line had no suggestions. She did however give me the email address for posting questions to their engineer group. The address is:
technicalresearch@netflix.com

I also recommend anyone who wishes to use Netflix contact them, either at the phone number below, or the email address above.

In case anyone is interested, below is what I wrote to Netflix. I am not claiming this as anything more than it is, a quick note of frustration, with some ideas for them. Here is what I wrote:

Dear Netflix,

I am blind, and use a Windows 7 laptop. Up until a week or so ago, your web site was extremely hard to navigate, but at least I could start a video.
Now, after your web page design changes implemented a few days ago, I cannot even start a video.

I am using the latest update of JAWS version 16; JAWS is the world’s most widely used screen reading software for the blind. I tried accessing your service with IE, Firefox, and Chrome, but could not get a video to start.
With IE, I cannot even activate my profile.

I am a reasonably experienced Internet user, and if there is a way to navigate your site with a screen reader, I have not figured it out. I am using the recommended common settings for JAWS, and I have no problems with some other video streaming services.

Back a few weeks ago, Netflix announced the addition of audio description.
That is a great move, and I applaud you for that. However, in a very ironic twist, it is not possible for a blind person to select the audio described version, even though one is on the part of your site that contains only audio described programs. Why add that extra step? If one is on the audio description page, the user obviously wants the audio described version, so why not make that the default?

In general, there seems to be a huge gap between your marketing department and the technology group. Netflix marketing is advertising this new and wonderful audio description service, but a blind person simply cannot navigate the site, especially after the rollout of your new web page design.

In closing, I am using a Windows laptop, and I do not have a smart phone.
The issues I am asking you to please fix are just for us old-fashioned blind folks using a Windows computer.

I know from experience that screen reader accessibility is a very narrow specialty and skill set, so if you do not have such an expert on staff, you could either hire one or contract with one of the accessibility consultant experts that will help you become and stay accessible.

I am happy to volunteer by helping you test any changes; I have done that in the past for a number of web service companies. Please advise, and much thanks.

Sincerely,
Tim Ford

I also am having trouble with Netflix. I can no longer access the search field. I have spoken to both the DVD customer service line and to the streaming customer service line.

The customer service number is
(877) 742-1480
You will be asked to go online to get a service code to speed things up. Not necessary. Just stay on the line and someone will answer.

We all need to call Netflix about this issue.

Hi,

A couple of things that may help. On the profile page use the jaws cursor to click on the profile you want. Use insert f7 to use the links list on the movies page. I agree they messed it up.

Dear Group:

I am new to this JAWS User Group. I am a subscriber to Netflix, who seems to want to make it darned difficult for screen readers to navigate.

I am operating with JAWS 14, Windows 7 and Internet Explorer. Netflix changed things about 4 months ago that made navigation difficult without a sighted person to use the mouse. Then, they changed again yesterday and I cannot navigate their site at all.

Any others out there with this issue?

Why use Outlook Light? I use Office 2013/Office 365 at work and I am given a choice of public or shared computer, private computer, or Outlook Light. I always use private computer because no one using this computer but me.

Carolyn, tell us more about 2013. I can't say I've been a heavy user lately, but I have it at home, and have no special problems with it. I'm still running under 7, but using the very latest JAWS maintenance release.

No matter what I do, nothing is working.
I'll call tech tomorrow, as it's the first day back for the school.

When I sign in and the steps state to click settings, don't remember off hand the rest, but one thing is when I click the light version, the page freezes.
From memory, I log in, I don't find a settings link, or anything when using the jaws curser, but there is this button menu to press for settings an aps.
I click that, I tab over to general, it expands, then I see the light version and press enter on it. Then it freezes.
This is driving me bonkers lol. No check boxes, or nothing of the sort.

Due to the differences in our time zones, it is night time here in Ireland.
So I probably won't see your reply for 9 or 10 hours, but let me know how it goes.

Ok, I pressed enter on the email, it made the formsmode sound and I couldn't down arrow, nothing. I can't find the body of the email to read about the update to the strike lol.
I'm going to go smoke now...

Hi,

That is the usual procedure,
However, depending on the type of account, you may be able to login via www.outlook.com.

In the case of my student email, I login via outlook.com/studentmail.ul.ie.

Maybe you could replace my information with what is after the @ sign in your email address.

Kind regards,

Hi,

Do you access your email via outlook.com?

If so, there is a lite version of the email interface which is just

check boxes, links end headings.

http://tinyurl.com/qzvs2y7

There is also an Outlook app for iOS which might work.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Niall

I'm clueless!

Reading the email, trying to forward, reply, even locating the send

just switched over to office 365, and I'm trying to check emails from

Thank you!
