David Kingsbury

Hi all,

Actually, I have never used the JAWS skim read because it reads either the first full sentence of every paragraph or first full line. I want to read just enough of a paragraph to get a sense of it and then move on. That does not always require reading a full sentence or line. Just the first four or five words might be enough. And if speed is the objective, and it is with skim reading, I don’t need to hear any more than what I need to hear. So you can do this in a couple of very quick and easy ways. First, hold down Control and keep it held down. Then press down arrow just enough to hear what you want to hear at the beginning of a paragraph, then hit down arrow again, and so on.

Or you can put JAWS in Quick keys mode with Insert Z and then just press P to jump to the next paragraph, P again and so on. Much more efficient than JAWS skim read.

Just to say that I personally found that the download link  for the English 32 and 64 bit version did not work even after multiple  presses of the enter on the link, even executing from the the links list did not work.

However I eventually got it down by bringing up the context menu and selecting save link as in Chrome and that brought the latest install down OK.

The key with Openbook is to adjust your settings as you want them and then save the settings.
I have my most often used settings that I saved over top of the factory settings, so when I start it up, it uses the modified default settings.
You can save as many settings configurations as you want, just give them different names.
If the FS person who helped you did not have you save those settings, then you need to recreate them, and then save the settings either over the default, or with a unique name that you then have to load each time you boot up...

Hi. From this page:

If Jarte does not recognize your screen reader program then you can force Jarte to switch to screen reader mode by copying the phrase "enable screen reader mode" to the Windows clipboard before starting Jarte. This only needs to be done one time.

Note to JAWS users: Jarte is currently unable to recognize the presence of the JAWS screen reader. If you are using JAWS then you will need to use the method described in the preceeding paragraph to force Jarte into screen reader mode.

Hello,
When I lift the lid of my computer, JAWS announces the volume level
twice and then presents me with the lock screen to log in.
Is there a means by which to disable this volume alert announcement?
This is a new behavior for me as this had not been exhibited in
JAWS2020 or previous versions of JAWS.
Thank you in advance for any responses.

As an aside I don't understand why screen reader mode can't be included
as an option in the program's menu system to make it a bit easier for
users who either want to enable or disable this mode in a way that is a
bit more obvious. I will suggest this to the developers but I encourage
others to do the same if this is a feature you feel is important.
As another aside there are several other ways to enable screen reader
mode, including modifying a line of text in the .ini file but the method
described in my previous message is perhaps the simplest.
If NVDA is running Jarte does seem to detect this screen reader and the
screen reader mode is usually enabled automatically. I wish a similar
arrangement could be made for JAWS users.

If Jarte does not recognize your screen reader program then you can
force Jarte to switch to screen reader mode by copying the phrase
"enable screen reader mode" to the Windows clipboard before starting
Jarte. This only needs to be done one time.

*Note to JAWS users:*Jarte is currently unable to recognize the
presence of the JAWS screen reader. If you are using JAWS then you
will need to use the method described in the preceeding paragraph to
force Jarte into screen reader mode.

Could somebody remind me of the setting change needed to make Jarte
work properly with Jaws? I think it was David who helpfully provided
this a few weeks ago. Now I have JFW 2021 of course Jarte is no
longer usable and I have instantly forgotten the setting change to
Jaws needed to make it work again.

I can switch back to Jaws 2020 but it would be good to make 2021
compliant as well.

I will remember to save the tip this time.

You could always use your friend, "Sharky!" to know the command. Just another way JAWS is working for yin the latest full upgrade.

hi, great topic, there are probably dozens of commands that are very useful, but we do not use them because we don't know them. Just right off the bat, I would put on the table the command for skim reading  document, it is mostly useful for long documents. The command is as follows:

jaws key plus control plus shift plus down arrow

Just today I learned that if you turn JAWS help mode on with JAWS + 1  and then double tap a key command, you get a slightly different help description than if you press a key onces.  I had no idea about it.  Do you have any favourite but not well known JAWS commands? or commands that took you a long time to discover?
