Re: Using SiriusXM.com with JAWS.

I cancelled my other radio I didn't have much use for, but I thought of getting the online only subscription. The way I see it, the only thing when it comes to sports that one can get there that costs more elsewhere is the NFL games. I have other services for music, but I want to hear my local teams. Nascar appears to be taken care of through Tunein's app, and I believe the Badgers' broadcasts were on iHeart.

I think it depends largely on the type of subscription you sign up for. If
you have total access, that will include all of the pro sports like the NFL,
MLB etc. Very few college games are streamed on the on-line player.

Does their online only version give you most of the sports channels? I got
one of those offers to reactivate an inactive radio, but streaming was about
all I ever used lately. The iOS version worked reasonably well. I could
search for Packers and turn that on. The web player isn't something I've
done much with lately.

And, I've never been able to get Winamp to be my default player.

My Windows 7 home PC and work laptop just keep going back to Windows Media
Player.

May need to try VLC.

Hi!

Windows Media Player seems just a bit clunky to me. Does anyone have a
recommendation for a powerful, accessible media player? Mostly, this would
be a player for audio files. Organizing a media library, creating
playlists, burning and ripping CDs and things like that are paramount.

Thanks,

Re: Need help making internet explorer my default browser.

Peter Tesar

Hello,

First, to make IE11 bring up the google.com site.
When IE11 is running, open the URL with:
ctrl plus o and type google.com (ENTER)
When the web site is loaded, then:
pull down the Tool menu with alt plus t
arrow up and select the Internet Options.

The first few tabs are for setting the default web page.
Select the current button and then tab to OK.

Second, setting IE11 as the default browser in Windows 10.
The Start menu does not work for me with the latest Jaws 16. As a note, NVDA does work in the Start menu.
You can do the same thing with the settings list.
Use Windows-key plus i to bring up the settings list.
You can arrow down through a short list of catagories.
Instead, tab to the search edit field.
Type "default" and do not press ENTER.
Tab to the list of default settings.
Arrow down and select
set default web browser.
In this page, there should be the IE11 that you can select.
The details for this latter step I cannot remember.

Hi, Ryan. Try their mobile site. It loads faster, and is easier to use. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, though. The link is below. It may be on more than one line, because the link is long, so you may have to cut and paste the multi-line link into your browser. But after that, you can add it as a favorite in your browser.

Fifteen months ago ago I began to have difficulty using my hotmail
account at home where I have centurytel as my ISP. For some reason it
is slow to load, and after 6 A.M. mountain time tends not to work,
with a message coming up that I should try again later. In going to
wireless hot spots in other places it tended to work. Nowwith changes
to their web-site I can no longer use them with the Pac Mate (which I
prefer to read e-mails on instead of the desktop). Also, with my
desktop, the site relies on buttons instead of key-board links, and
I'm really not sure how one deletes messages, searches for them, etc.
I use on my desktop Jaws 14 and windows 7. Are there any of you other
Jaws users who dislike the new outlook e-mail? Also, is there any one
of you who know of an e-mail contact address where I can send my
deepest dislike for their site to? I would like the option to go back
to the old site. Also, since gmail still works great on my Pac Mate, I
would like to send my thanks to them for keeping their site blind and
key-board friendly. So do any of you have an e-mail address for them
as well so I can send my sincere thanks. Regards, Ryan
Coverdell

Win 10 Carve-Outs?

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

I can recall a few times when Ms made various Windows programs available separately-the calculator from 7, the media player from ME. It would be nice if they'd make the new Defender available as a separate, as that seems to be one of the OS's more desirable applications-just a thought.

Dave...

Yes, same as before. Create a paragraph, using these punctuations. Then read
using the different setting either as an entire paragraph, or word-by-word.

I think the question is what changes do the different levels make? What are
the practical differences between all, some, most? Even none lets one or
two things slip through--the apostrophe, for example.

Hi Adrian & List Members,

Steps for, Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly

1. Press, Insert + F2, to open the Jaws Manager.
2. Goto Keyboard Manager and press enter.
3. Navigate to Default, & then tab 1 time to get into the list of options.
4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level If
it says none. That means there has not been a keystroke assigned.
5. Press the Alt key to open the menues, & right arrow to Action. Then down
arrow to Add Keystroke, & press enter. Or press control + A which is the
shortcut for asigning a keystroke.
6. Insert a keystroke combination like control + dash for example. If the
combination is already being used for another command jaws will tell you.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used
in all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open
asking if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the
spacebar on the Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level. So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear the
punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

Take care.

Although this method involves a menu, it isn't onerous. Press JAWS key+v to
open the quick settings dialog. Then press p until JAWS verbalizes
"punctuation." On my system, it takes three presses of p once you arrow past

the edit field. Or you can type p in the edit field and three options
appear, the second of which is "punctuation." Press the spacebar to cycle
through the punctuation level choices, leave the one you want, tab to Okay
and press enter.

I don't know if a hotkey can be created for this operation.

is there an e-mail address to send comments to hotmail (now outlook), about how deeply I dislike their site changes?

Ryan Coverdell

Coverdell

In outlook 2013, there is no need to "create" an unread folder.
When I'm in my jfw email list, I just tab, and there is an unread button, I
press spacebar, and poof all the unread emails are there.

You can create an "unread" folder for unread mail. This collects unread
email from all folders where you direct email. I haven't done it in a while,
but you'll find instructions via Google.

Oh, I'm using Outlook 2010, but I'd be surprised if this very useful feature
were omitted from 2013.

I think Outlook 2013 is a good system. I just have a lot to learn with the
ribbon concept and all, coming from Outlook Express. I think Outlook is
superior to Outlook Express. I have had it for three weeks and realize that
I had OE for 11 years and did not learn it over night.

You can hit Control Y and go to various boxes. Control 3 takes you directly
to Contacts; Control 1 or Control Shift I will take you back to Inbox. Also
you can hit Control Y then I to go back to it. One thing that I liked better
about OE is that it might say, 50 messages, 44 unread. With this, you just
get the unread, and you can't hit Control U to get to them. You have to
arrow to them. Joseph that helped me got it fixed where that the unread
message does not go away when I arrow through lists to get to personal
messages. It has Favorites. That is, that you Control Tab, and there you
have a list of your boxes, Calendar, Journal, Notes, etc. I have tried to
get a book on it, but the library has none. I understand there is one for
$80, which I would not be purchasing at this point, since I just bought
computer, JAWS upgrades then had to replace hearing aids.

A good working set up with it is the contacts. When writing an e-mail, when
you are in the address fields, To, cc, or bcc, you press Alt Period, and the
contact list appears like it does for a sighted person. You must arrow
through names, and when you see the name you want, hit enter. Go through the
list until you have them, then press enter twice.

As far as I know, with attachments, you get on the document you want to
attach and press Control C to copy it. You go back to Outlook, enter your
contact(s), go to Subject, and then paste the copy in the body. That is way
different than I have had, where I could pull up a directory, go to the item
I wanted to attach and press Enter.

I don't know how to work in the extra features, but have listed some
appointments in Calendar.

Joseph the Free Tech guy from another list has spent a lot of time getting
me to the point where I am.

There is one section called notes. It could work for me, when I'm on the
phone taking information. Then I could work on it and either file it else
where or use it in an e-mail, if I want. That is a good place to store
shipping information, etc.

I have set up a box though called All mine, where I park e-mails like that
with tracking number and that sort of information.

I set up a box called Keepers, where I have stored tutorial information
regarding Outlook and Office 2013.

I set up a box for one of my lists, but must have missed a step, because
nothing was coming to my Inbox and everything going there, so I had to move
everything out of that one and just delete the box. To do that, you Control
Tab to Favorites and arrow to the box and hit Delete.

I hope this rambling gives you a tiny glimpse of Outlook. Me telling you
about is about like me describing how the new car models look this year.

Best from,

Carolyn

That is the usual procedure,
However, depending on the type of account, you may be able to login via
www.outlook.com.

In the case of my student email, I login via outlook.com/studentmail.ul.ie.

Maybe you could replace my information with what is after the @ sign in your
email address.

Hi,

Do you access your email via outlook.com?

If so, there is a lite version of the email interface which is just

check boxes, links end headings.

http://tinyurl.com/qzvs2y7

There is also an Outlook app for iOS which might work.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Niall

Re: Firefox 40 question

Brad Martin

As I recall either 38 or 39 had a major security fix for a problem. Can't remember what it was, but it made the news, and they really encouraged people to upgrade. By the time I heard about it, mine had already updated.

There is a common misconception that every time a browser is updated, its security features are also updated. But this is not necessarily the case. I think Mozilla keeps updating Firefox to fix bugs that it created in the first place. I don't think FF 40 is necessarily more secure than FF 35, but if you are uncomfortable using FF 35, that's for you to decide. My understanding is that FF 40 added enhancements for improved compatibility with Windows 10, which may explain why it is more sluggish and vulnerable to freezes and crashes than previous versions which are not Win 10 compatible. The advantage of installing the portable version of FF 35 is that if you decide not to use it, you can simply revert to using FF 40 as you see fit. No harm, no foul.

This is tempting. But I believe Mozilla enhances security support with each version, so by working with an older version, do we risk exposure to online nastiness?

You can download Firefox 35 portable and other earlier versions of Firefox
from the following web site. Just download the version you want and save it
someplace that is easy to find. Because this is a portable version, it does
not install permenantly on your PC like the full version, but runs as a .exe
file. You can pin the .exe file to the start menu so that you can easily
launch it . I find Firefox 35 to be much more stable and JAWS friendly than
FF 40. Mozilla keeps tinkering with Firefox to the detriment of screen
reader users like us.

Hi Gerald,

I didn’t know that you could have multiple versions of Firefox installed.
Where would I find the version 35? I think if I can find an earlier version,
I’ll simply uninstall version 40.

Cheers,

I am finding that Firefox 40 keeps switching from one open tab to another
without me doing anything but reading a page. It’s quite annoying. It also
takes a very long time to load some web pages.

Is anyone else finding Firefox switching tabs on its own?

Thanks,

Subject: Firefox 40 question

Hello, everyone.

Typically, with Firefox, I use the control L command, after which I can
paste a web site address into the edit box, and hit enter. I'm then able
to
open The web site from that point.

However, I'm finding that the control L command no longer works with
Firefox 40.

Has anyone noticed this change, and are there good work-arounds?

I have gotten to the point where I actually prefer Firefox to Internet
Explorer for accessing and navigating web sites, so this apparent change
in
Firefox behavior is somewhat disconcerting.

I'm using Jaws 16 and Windows 7 here.

Thank you.
