Re: accessible web editor

Walker, Michael E

Good morning,

The accessible web editor really all depends on your website's requirements. If you are just building a basic web page, it would be fine to use Word to create it, and save it as a filtered web page. Another free option for building websites is KompoZer. KompoZer is a bit outdated (latest stable released in 2007), since it does not follow HTML5 standards, but again it is fine for basic websites for displaying information. Either way, if you choose to use an HTML editor, you will still need to know what is going on underneath the hood, to edit the code.

If you are wanting to get more sophisticated like a contact form, and you are not a programmer, then I too would recommend WordPress. Also, if you want interactivity on your site, such as the ability for viewers to post comments, you will want WordPress. There are two ways you can approach WordPress, depending on your requirements: wordpress.com, or download the software from wordpress.org to host yourself, based on your hosting provider. If you do not wish to pay for WordPress and hosting, and just want a free website for displaying information and allowing users to comment/you want a contact form, use wordpress.com. If you want to get fancy and build an e-commerce site, download WordPress from wordpress.org or look at your hosting provider's one-click installation options. Many hosting providers have it built in where you can perform the equivalent of a one-click installation for popular software like WordPress. It may be under something like Autoinstaller or Simple Scripts, or could be called Fantastico de Luxe.

If you later decide that you need to get really advanced, you could learn web design from a programmer's perspective, and learn CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Ruby on Rails, and/or parts of Java Enterprise Edition like servlets, Java server pages, Java server faces, etc. I certainly understand where you are coming from, if you think this seems like a lot of technology. If you need to program, start with PHP. If you are building a web application for a large enterprise, look more towards the other technologies I mentioned for servers: Java Enterprise, Ruby on Rails, etc. Overall, go for cost, and compare each of the technologies, as they pertain to your requirements. Look at factors like development times for each decision. I recommend PHP as a starting point though, because it is very popular. Most web hosting providers also offer a PHP and MySQL solution. WordPress is powered by PHP and MySQL.

There is plenty you can do with web design, with little or no programming though, so I would certainly recommend sticking with WordPress or an HTML editor, if your site is simple in nature, and not reflective of a web application. If it is meant to be more of an application, you may wish to see what WordPress can do still. There are thousands of existing plugins that can extend WordPress. If I wanted a contact form on a contact page, for example, I would look for an existing plugin that implemented that functionality.

There are even other content management systems like Joomla! and Drupal. In short, the sky is the limit when it comes to web design. Good luck.

Best regards,
Mike

Re: JAWS delayed speech response issue

Carolyn Arnold <4carolyna@...>

I haven't experienced the problem of JAWS in a deeper voice, other than
when JAWS has had a lot of material to read; then sometimes, it will do
that and then sort of catch its breath. The problem I encounter and hope
that goes away with 17 is in Outlook, there are times I can't exactly
navigate. I get no indication of a space or line. Most of the time, I can
run Spell Check, and it gets me back in sync. Occasionally, I just dump
my message and start over.

Pablo, I only use the touch screen for the password if I cannot get my
Bluetooth keyboard to respond or when I forget to turn it on, <grain>. But
even using the regular Bluetooth keyboard, it is not easy to focus on the
password entry field. I don't know if it's a focus issue with Jaws or
Windowsd-related. It would be interesting to know if other screen readers
encounter the same issue. In summary,it's a generic problem, not related
just to the touch screen. I'm also using a Surface Pro Three running
Windows 8.1.

Hi all,

I am working very hard, just trying to understand better how use the jesters
with jaws 16 and jaws 17 in 2 different tablets. Both tablets are Microsoft
surface pro 3, and one is using windows 8.1 professional, and the other is
running windows 10 professional also.

I read the FS manuals about using touch screen with jaws, but I need to make
sure that the following situation is a jaws problem, or maybe something else
that I don't know.

On the tablets, when we are starting or restarting the tablets, the first
screen that will appear is the lock screen. Jaws is going to find here the
time, battery and the warning saying that screen locked.

To go to the logon screen, we need to flick up 3 fingers. Jaws is going to
say, log on. But here some times for some reason, if I flick left or right
to find the text box where I should type my password, Jaws reads the
controls, buttons, links, and the text box, but we are no able to place the
pc cursor on any control. I mean, if I flick until the password text box,
and I do a double 1 finger tab, for some reason the virtual keyboard will
not show. Ok, we are able to open the virtual keyboard sliding 3 fingers up
and down, but looks like the pc cursor is not on the text box, because
sliding 3 fingers up and down, the virtual keyboard doesn't open, and looks
according with my wife, that jaws is reading things that doesn't appear on
the screen. It means for me that jaws is no moving the screen up to the
login screen, or it is how it looks.

How do you using the touch jesters are able to login in your tablets?

Thanks

pc cursor on any control.

Thanks

JAWS delayed speech response issue

aaron lane <ajbd777@...>

Hello. I've recently purchased a new PC running Windows 8. I have
installed JAWS 16. Anytime I start to type, JAWS speech is delayed
with a lower volume, for just a split second. Has anyone else
encountered this? Anyone know a fix? Thanks much.

Windows key, type programs and features. You will get a list of apps which
you can navigate by first letter.

One of the big steps forward from XP to Win7 was that you could navigate the
add/remove applications list by first letter. It's a shame MS forgot that
lesson.

Hi Paul,
Unfortunately you can't use the first letter in the list of all apps, and I
don't know of any setting. I don't know why this is the case, and have
provided feedback to Microsoft on this issue.
You can use page up/down to jump in bigger steps.
The closest thing to first letter navigation is the following.
The list of apps is arranged alphabetically, and in addition it is grouped
by the first letter of the items, and this letter appears as a heading
before the items starting with that letter.
When you select items in the list using up and down arrow, home/end, page
up/down, these headings are ignored.
However if you press tab, you're moved to the heading for the group. You can
then use up/down arrow and home/end to move through these headings. You can
then press shift+tab you move to the first item in that group.

Maybe Microsoft will put this right one day, David.

Hi,

So just a quick windows 10 question. So in windows 10 the 'all programs '
option in the start menu has changed to the 'all apps' option. However
in windows 7 and older versions when in the all programs/apps window you
could either use the arrow keys to move up and down or type the first letter

of the program you wanted and it would then take you to programs of
which ever letter you pressed, so for example pressing J would take you to
the jaws program. In windows 10 although you can still move about with the
arrow keys you can't seem to go to a program by typing its first letter.
Does anyone know is there a setting that I can change in windows 10 so I
can use first letter navigation to get round in the all apps window?

Hi David,

Thanks for the email, yep it's a shame the first letter navagation has gone
as it was a good feature. The info you supplied in your email was really
helpful though and definitly makes navagating the all apps window easier, so
thanks for that. I'll do a feedback submission to Microsoft too, whether
it will ever get changed is another thing, but I guess the more they hear
people want the feature the more likely we are to see it reappear.

Is MsConfig part of 10? It'll probably show JAWS as a service, if it's configured properly. I think it occurs in both that column and the startup group. I've never messed with it there, as the other way is so much more convenient.

Re: accessible web editor

Rex Leslie Howard, Jr.

You might try www.html-cleaner.com
Give that a shot. If you have any questions, email me directly, mark it as high
priority and put Attention Rex or something specifically related to HTML
editors, etc. I get hundreds of emails a day and sometimes people get lost in
the shuffle if I miss their email the first time through.

You access the toolbars while in the edit fields with alt and thf10 key. There
are some tutorials for that resource but they are kind of vague in some places.
Your best bet of all would be to get a WordPress account and use that WYSIWYG
(what you see is what you get). It's almost 100 percent accessible and you can
generate the page and copy the code to wherever you need it. That's kind of a
long way around the barn to get to the trough but if you don't know how WYSIWYG
editors work, then it's the best possible place for you to start. If you do
understand WYSIWYG, then use the html cleaner link. You can create your pages in
Microsoft Word and have them really and truly cleaned for website presentation.

Ron,

Give me a call. I might have a good idea for you on this.

Hey guys,

I have been looking for a web page editor/builder for a couple weeks
now and I am very frustrated that there isn't much out there. Does
anyone know of a html editor that works completely with JAWS so I can
build my web site without writing it in Notepad? If possible, I would
like an editor that I could download to my computer. I have tried
Bluegriffon and CoffeeCup and I cannot find any others. I do not know
if I am even using the correct term such as web editor or html editor.

Thanks
