Re: do I need sighted assistance to upgrade to windows 10

Peter Tesar

Hello,

before you try to upgrade to Windows 10, FS recommends that you first run their program to remove all earlier components before the current JAWS 16.

First update your JAWS 16 and then download and run:
fsPrepareWin10_enu.exe

You will then have the most recent JAWS 16 running which gives you control while upgrading to Windows 10.

I used the MS creation tool. While download (50 minutes) I used JAWS to give me the progress percentage.

Once the computer restarts, there is no JAWS. It would be easier for sighted assistance to watch what is happening. After the installis complete, the computer will reboot a few times.

This took me another 50 minutes.
Then you can turn on the narrator. For me it was the hot key ctrl plus ENTER.

Somewhere before the first reboot, you canchoose the:
keep all personal files and programs.

Once you have Windows 10 coming up with JAWS 16, you can then install the JAWS 17 beta. Warning, with the first JAWS 17 beta, the authorization key was removed. JAWS 16 and 17 beta came up in demo mode.

There is now a second JAWS 17 beta and I don't know if this problem has been fixed.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply, what is the media creation tool? Is that just the
standard windows upgrade program that will run when I click to upgrade
windows or is it something separate I need to download?

Good morning Paul, I did it with the, "Meedia creation tool." This was done
without sited help. Either Jaws or the narator will walk you through it.
Thanks, Tom

Hi,

I think I'm going to upgrade my laptop to windows 10. I've seen the advice
on freedom Scientific's website is to uninstall jaws before the upgrade.
Does anyone know if I start narrator will that work throughout the upgrade
process or will there be a point where narrator stops working and sighted
assistance is needed to click options to install the update?

I've also seen a couple of emails on the list about advisable settings to
change in windows 10 once its installed, but I wasn't planning to upgrade at
that point so didn't pay much attention. So if there are any settings in
windows 10 that are advisable to change once installed it would be
appreciated if people could let me know what they are.

I know we've had lots of emails about the windows 10 upgrade so sorry if I'm
asking a question that has been asked a million times before.

Paul

Alt E must be out of touch.

I know from a later message that you can't get the "e" step to work.
I'm finding with the ribbon that you sometimes need to wait for JAWS to
speak something before pressing a letter. Thus:

Alt (wait for JAWS to speak),
F (wait for JAWS to speak),
And so on. The wait is longer at some steps than others. I hope that
turns out to be why "e" isn't working.

I think those sounds work better with Eloquence. There are some fun ones
- but not contributory to JAWS other than to try to explain what happens
when I press Alt E or Alt F, I, and then the E. Some way, right now, my
Alt E must be out of touch.

Bye for now,

Carolyn

Carolyn, I about jumped out of my skin. I thought JAWS was having a
conniption fit. For fun I tried the sound in SAPI 5--not nearly as
effective.

There is a little ring thing with Windows 10 when something doesn't

There is a prettier sound with the e-mails. The other sound is OK, the

Hi folks! I've been dealing with this issue for quite a while now, and
cannot seem to get any relief. I'm having trouble with JAWS and
Outlook 2013, particularly after I have been using it for a couple of
hours.
JAWS will start to perform very sluggishly, and even sometimes, I get a
message saying that Outlook is not responding. It's really annoying.
Most of the time, I end up restarting my machine. Does anyone else
have this problem?
How have you addressed it?

Re: Problem with New JAWS v16.0.4463 and Outlook 2010

Paul Martz <skewmatrix@...>

Thanks for everyone's continued help with this issue.

It is not a problem with the Outlook window being minimized. The behavior is
the same whether the window is maximized or "restored".

I also played around with the "Customize Outlook Message List" JAWS manager,
a very cool little tool that I hadn't heard of before, and again no luck.
Regardless of how I configured this, I still got the same incorrect
behavior.

But I finally figured out a workaround. In the "View" tab of the ribbon UI,
I have to uncheck "Show as Conversation". Once I do that, everything reads
correctly. But if I have that checked, then nothing is read as I arrow down
through my message list. This is not an ideal workaround, as I rather like
to have messages grouped by conversation, but at least I can access my email
again.

I guess my next thing to try would be to completely uninstall JAWS including
my own custom settings, then reinstall, and see if that resolves this issue.
After all, no one else is encountering this problem, so it must be something
specific to my system.

Thanks, all. I consider this closed, and J Bron can go ahead and hijack this
thread now if he wants to. <grin>
-Paul

-----Original Message-----
Paul,

This behavior reminds me of the times I've somehow minimalized Outlook
2010. If this is the problem, the solution is to focus on the Outlook
window,
press alt-space, then x for maximize.

For what it's worth, even though the problem arose after installation of a
JAWS update and this action apparently caused the change, it doesn't sound
like a JAWS issue.

Re: HOd (Host On demand) navigation

As Tom said, I set my cursor to blink. I used to think it needed to be
a blinking block, but underscore works too as long as it's blinking.
Also shrink your font to 9 or less and if it's available, set it to a
truetype font.

If you have theme choices, you could play with those as well.

I've never seen an emulator that works out of the box with Jaws so you
need to fool with it.

Re: Addressing envelopes with Word 2013

Steve Griffiths

I'm getting no joy reading this screen either, even with the JAWS cursor or by virtualising the window.

The same thing happens in the Signature edit area of Outlook 2013, another multi-line edit area. But it doesn't happen in a similar edit control in the Automatic replies dialogue of Outlook 2013.

One thing I have noticed is that, although you can't use Ctrl-A to select everything, then paste it elsewhere to check it, you can select it line by line with Shift + arrows. JAWS says nothing is being selected, and when you do Ctrl-C it says nothing is copied, but you can ignore these messages, because when you then paste it elsewhere, it's there. Weird, but it does give a way of checking what's in these areas.

What about changing the custom outlook list, with an jaws key+f2? Within
here you are able to change what part of the message line is read.

Hi Tom. Thanks for your help with this.

I reset my folder view to the default, but I still get the same behavior:
arrowing down through the list of messages causes JAWS to say nothing,
except when it lands on an unread message, and then JAWS announces "unread"
but that's it. JAWS doesn't announce the sender, subject, or date.

For my typical folder view, I change the following settings:
- Turn the reading pane off.
- Go into View Settings, Group By, and uncheck "Automatically group
according to an arrangement".
- Finally, back in the ribbon UI, select the "Show As Conversations"
checkbox.
But this is irrelevant, as I get the same behavior, whether I'm using my
settings or the default view settings.

Other things I've tried:
- I completely uninstalled JAWS including shared modules, but kept my user
settings. Then reinstalled the current JAWS release.
- I noticed I had some custom outlook2010 files in my user settings,
probably when I was tinkering around with scripts. So I deleted those, then
rebooted.
But, doing the above has had no effect.

Still stumped!
-Paul

Hi Paul. I installed build 4463 and took it for a spin with Outlook
2010
on my
Windows 8.1 machine and it worked fine. Everything read as I expected
it too. I was, however, using the default view that I always use.

How is your Outlook view different from the default? Just curious.

Tom

Carolyn, I about jumped out of my skin. I thought JAWS was having a conniption fit. For fun I tried the sound in SAPI 5--not nearly as effective.

I hope that
turns out to be why "e" isn't working.

do I need sighted assistance to upgrade to windows 10

paul lemm

Paul

Re: Problem with New JAWS v16.0.4463 and Outlook 2010

Adrian Spratt

Paul,

This behavior reminds me of the times I've somehow minimalized Outlook 2010. If this is the problem, the solution is to focus on the Outlook window, press alt-space, then x for maximize.

For what it's worth, even though the problem arose after installation of a JAWS update and this action apparently caused the change, it doesn't sound like a JAWS issue.

Subject: RE: Problem with New JAWS v16.0.4463 and Outlook 2010

-Paul

on my
Windows 8.1 machine and it worked fine. Everything read as I expected it
too. I was, however, using the default view that I always use.

How is your Outlook view different from the default? Just curious.

Tom

I wonder if that happens with any other version of Windows, like Windows XP
or Windows 7, for example?

There is a little ring thing with Windows 10 when something doesn't work.
There is a prettier sound with the e-mails. The other sound is OK, the
bur'r'r'r'r'r'r'r'r'r'r was the only way I knew to explain what happened
when I struck the E.

Bye for now,

Carolyn

Out of curiosity, what exactly is a

When I hit the F, of course, I get that and then same with the I, but
when I hit the E, I get the little Windows 10

I know from a later message that you can't get the "e" step to work. I'm
finding with the ribbon that you sometimes need to wait for JAWS to speak
something before pressing a letter. Thus:

Alt (wait for JAWS to speak),
F (wait for JAWS to speak),
And so on. The wait is longer at some steps than others. I hope that
turns out to be why "e" isn't working.

This is how I undo protected view in Word 2010, on a document-by-document

risk.

Press alt, then f, then I, then e.

Hi folks! I've been dealing with this issue for quite a while now, and
cannot seem to get any relief. I'm having trouble with JAWS and Outlook
2013, particularly after I have been using it for a couple of hours.
JAWS will start to perform very sluggishly, and even sometimes, I get a
message saying that Outlook is not responding. It's really annoying.
Most of the time, I end up restarting my machine. Does anyone else have
this problem?
How have you addressed it?

Hi, Carolyn. Alt plus V, which is the quick settings menu, gives you a quick way to change a lot of options. One of those options is the Virtual Ribbon settings.

Also, Carolyn, just going to the Trust Center may not allow you to arrow through the settings. You may need to tab through the settings, or tabbing once or twice may take you to buttons or a dialogue box in which you can turn Protected Mode off.

Hi, Carolyn. Is your Virtual Ribbon turned off? Perhaps the reason it
won't take the E is because virtual ribbons are turned on, or checked
under the Quick Settings menu.

I was told Alt F, I, E, but mine won't take the E. I have instructions

arrow down to anything.

To turn off permanently the protected files, go to files (alt-f), then
options (t). There is a huuuuuuuge dialog with protected files either
in their own category or under trust center, I don't remember which.
Within that dialog somewhere, though.
