Re: dual source headsets, where to get?

Brent Harding

I just spoke with them. The lady I got didn't think at first that this one did two sources at all, but I had her look at the features part. She said that they have no 3.5mm connection adapter for the phone side, but she said she would email their shipping people to see if they can get such a thing. So much for Plantronics telling me that no such product existed.

Oh, OK. I wonder if they make a way to have it hook into the 4 band 3.5mm
jacks on the phone side? I think I get how this is supposed to work where
some phones had the removable cord on the handset part, and you plug a cable
from the amp part into this instead, and the original phone cable in to the
other side, sort of like answering machines did.

The Amplifier is for the phone itself. The Amp plugs into where the
handset
would be, and you run the headset that way. I've used it before, and they
work Ok.

way

the
play and fastforward buttons. I wonder why one needs an amplifier at all

it would be nice if the microphone sent its output back to the phone. I

thing I found years ago was a discontinued Plantronics headset, but it
only
had the RJ headset plug for the phone side, which may or may not be able
to
be adapted. Also, I'd like something less expensive than that. I spoke
with
Plantronics the other day, and it appeared that what they may have had
has
been discontinued so long ago that it isn't in their system any more. The
guy told me that the only dual source headsets like that have to be
manually
switched between phone call and other source, which doesn't work if you
switch to read something and the person on the other end says something
you
missed. What are people doing to achieve this these days?

Re: dual source headsets, where to get?

Brent Harding

He was planning on some kind of cable with the iPhone headset style 3.5mm connection on one side, a regular 3.5mm connector like computers use on the other, and the other end of the cable would plug in to any iPhone compatible headset mic. It's looking about half the price of the nearest solution I found elsewhere, which was the Plantronics SMH-1783-11, which is more for corded phones to go between the handset and phone. I don't think the phone handset connector can be adapted for iPhones though.

what I do when the need arises is to use a single earpiece headset (headphone plus a built in mic) connected to the phone and one earbud plugged into the computer. now I'd be interested in the adaptor the engineer comes up with, as I'd like to have a more elegant headpiece in attempt to eliminate all the wires.

Sharon took Meredith to the Kennedy Kreiger Institute in Baltimore for
evaluation and hoped for treatment. After a thorough study of her history,
as well as examination, they determined that Meredith was not a candidate
for inpatient treatment at their facility.

They did make recommendations with regard to adjustment of some of her
medication and, yet again, more physical therapy to fight damage that has
already had effects on her leg muscles and both sides of her pelvis bone.

It was a letdown after clinging to hope for a couple of months like we did,
but those were a nice couple of months.

Please keep her in your prayers.

Re: dual source headsets, where to get?

I am surprised Plantronics never mentioned that one. Maybe there isn't a way to have a 3.5mm 4-ring plug for the phone end. I don't care at all about the play and fastforward buttons. I wonder why one needs an amplifier at all unless you were hearing impaired.

You can visit headsets.com. They have a model made by Plantronics that does
exactly what you're talking about here. I've included a link to the product

I am wondering how you go about getting a dual source headset to be able to
hear JFW on one side and have a phone call on the other side. Even better,
it would be nice if the microphone sent its output back to the phone. I
tried getting quotes on a sight called Thumbtack, and I spoke with a guy who
answered who does audio engineering on the side. He thinks he could make a
cable where I could plug any headset mic in to do this, as long as it had
the combination jack that combines the headset and mic on it. If one was
going to use a phone that has the same kind of jack as the iPhone, which
uses the 4-band, 3.5mm connector, does such a product exist? The closes
thing I found years ago was a discontinued Plantronics headset, but it only
had the RJ headset plug for the phone side, which may or may not be able to
be adapted. Also, I'd like something less expensive than that. I spoke with
Plantronics the other day, and it appeared that what they may have had has
been discontinued so long ago that it isn't in their system any more. The
guy told me that the only dual source headsets like that have to be manually
switched between phone call and other source, which doesn't work if you
switch to read something and the person on the other end says something you
missed. What are people doing to achieve this these days?

what I do when the need arises is to use a single earpiece headset (headphone plus a built in mic) connected to the phone and one earbud plugged into the computer. now I'd be interested in the adaptor the engineer comes up with, as I'd like to have a more elegant headpiece in attempt to eliminate all the wires.

Thanks, Mario. I like your idea of a sort of, "let's learn how to program -
using JAWS scripting". It makes a lot of sense to teach basic programming,
using JSL as an example. The idea has a lot of merit.

While looking for Kenneth Gould article, I found this:
http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com/jawsscripting.html
Looks like some valuable information. But if you know where the Gould
article is, could you email the address? Or post it here? Or to my blog? Or
all of the above... LOL

I'll put in as much time on this as I can, but it's one of those big
projects. I need to review all the available information first. Then
actually become competent with JSL, otherwise I'm just blowing hot air.
Finally, I can move forward with some kind of wikibook. Anyhow, I'll blog as
I go.

Thanks for the feedback.

Paul, since no one has responded, here's my thought:

in addition to your ideas, what the blind user who wants to get into
writing
JAWS scripts really needs is to learn basic concepts of programming in
order
to do the nifty stuff, like using functions, arrays, etc.

about 12 years ago when I tried my hand at scripting, there was a
document called "Everything you wanted to know about scripting, ...",
written by Kenneth A. Gould. I think it's still on FS's website or
some where
else... it
was divided into two parts.

the first part dealt with the basic stuff, like how to get started,
syntax, etc.
but the second part dealt with stuff that assumed that the user had
prior programming knowledge about concepts, techniques, etc.
like the knowledge one would attain after programming for a while... a
good while.

since you've programmed for about 3 decades,... I think it was you, ...
you could fill in the missing explanation that a newbie would need to
comprehend before attempting to try their hand at scripting.

creating a wiki sounds like a good idea, this way other experienced
programmers could also contribute to the cause, working out
explainations of different concepts, and whatever else would be
important. but it should be that a newbie needs to register and login
in order to read and/or contribute. and I'd also suggest that only the
experienced programmers have the right to add/modify these materials
that teach the needed concepts and explainations, effectively
preventing mis information by any newbie. the experienced programmer
who would want to contribute would have to send an email request , to
you?, to be approved. if this last part doesn't sit well with you,
something has to be done to ensure that the newbie is not mis informed
of explainations and whatever else would be important to understand.

your thoughts?

On 8/12/2015 2:53 PM, Paul Martz via Jfw wrote:
Hi all. A few days ago, there was some discussion on learning JAWS
scripting. I've started learning it myself, and wanted to post some
thoughts.

First, I've decided to blog about JSL as I learn it. My blog page is
here:
https://skewmatrix.wordpress.com/ . No advertisements or popups,
just straight information about JSL whenever I learn something
interesting.
The "JSL #1" post enumerates the available JAWS Scripting Language
resources that I've found. Please post comments if you know of other
resources.

Second, I'm toying with the idea of starting an online book project
about JSL, for example at wikibooks.com. The advantage of putting
this book online as a wikibook is that the information would be much
more likely to stay up-to-date and relevant; people could
immediately correct any typos or mistakes; and of course the book
would be free to all and readily available online. I have written
technical books in the past, so this wouldn't be too much of a
stretch for me. (I just need to learn it first. Ha ha.)

The question is: In light of the wonderful documentation from
Freedom Scientific that is already available, what kind of content
would I / we need to provide in this new online resource in order to
make it worthwhile? What would you like to know about JSL that you
can't already learn from the FS docs? Would we want something like a
brief overview of JAWS scripting? Or maybe a "quick start guide" to
get you up and running with the basics? Or possibly a "scripting
gems" kind of book, with several examples of JAWS scripts? Or a language
reference?
Or all of the above? Of course, "we don't need this, the FS docs are
fine" is
also an acceptable response.

Any thoughts or comments... Thanks...
-Paul

Re: JAWS and Windows 10 issue

Hi Mike,

Well, I am not getting the same problem that you are getting with your jaws
cursor. Even though, I have found other problems, but curiously the problems
are different in 4 different computers. Would be interesting to know why
jaws is working differently in 4 different computers, when all windows 10
installation are new, and all jaws installation are new also. A couple of
hours ago, I installed jwindows 10 in a new computer, Lenovo desktop, and
jaws has been working very good. I am noticing a problem when I press alt
tab when I want to go to other window, but it doesn't happen always. I am
still noticing that when the computer is in the log in window, jaws is not
able to read the text field where we should type the password. If I press
tab, nothing happen, if I try to use insert tab to read where is the Pc
cursor, nothing happen. I have to press alt tab two times to make jaws catch
the control where is the password field.
I really don't understand why all these problems are different in each
computer.

Re: disabling forms mode

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

That's more or less what the recent forms mode changes are meant to do. With the proper settings, you should be able to tab around, going in and out as needed. I enter data on Internet apps every day, and it's something that works for me with minimal effort most of the time. You can even tune your settings for individual sights. JAWS help, or a review of what's new in recent releases, covers this well.

Subject: disabling forms mode

Hello all:

I am a JAWS 16 user who has used JAWS for years. I’ve always found myself frustrated to have to press Enter anytime I want to start or stop entries in Forms Mode; sighted people can just type their info in, without the extra steps. Is there a way I could disable Forms Mode so that I could just type in the needed info? I am a fast typist and find that I go faster than the field can appear or disappear! It would be nice if, upon reaching a form field, JAWS could just say, “to field,” then you immediately type a person’s name, for instance... I’ve always been mystified about the purpose of Forms Mode: what issues was it designed to address? Any responses are appreciated.

Re: JAWS and Windows 10 issue

Michael Mote

I'm going to make an educated guess that it may have to do with the types of
video drivers that are installed in the different computers. I have
experienced JAWS not identifying the password field at start-up. It never
reads that to me correctly either. So far, not a big fan of Windows 10.
I'm hopeful it will get better. I seem to remember Windows 8 starting out
like this too.

I really don't understand why all these problems are different in each
computer.

Hi folks! Not sure if this is a JAWS thing or not, but it seems like I
cannot use my JAWS cursor to read things in Windows 10. Is there some
setting that I need to adjust for this to happen? I have really enjoyed the
helpful information that has been passed along by those of you who are
running Windows 10. Thanks a lot for the feedback!

Yes this is a jaws support list and all of us benefit immeasurably from the
information we gain. But we're human beings first and this has been
demonstrated throughout this thread. How can you not react to someone's
medical difficulties and traumas? I know we all wish Carolyn and her family
good health and pray her family member has a complete recovery. Now back to
our regularly scheduled programming.

Daniel, I did the Insert Shift R, hope this is off list. I'm still a bit on
the crippled side since getting Outlook Saturday night with my new computer.

Thanks for your encouragement.

Best from,

Carolyn

I am so sorry. I don't know how yet how to make distribution lists, and was
very embarrassed that this came up in this list.

Best from,

Carolyn

Carolyn, sounds as if the mistake is working out pretty well.
