the best browser when it comes to streaming videos and other media by
far. The video never pauses for example. In IE, the same video pauses
a few times for a few seconds. Also, Google Chrome is the easiest
browser to use. Yes, I am not kidding. Simply press enter on the
browser, and the home page opens. I have mine set to Google of
course. Now, just press alt and the screen reader will say chrome

need is in that one vertical column. The history, delete history,
book marks, are all in that one vertical menu just by pressing the
alt key on the home page. All navigation JAWS short cut keys work in
Google Chrome. I have not found anything yet that is n ot
accessible. Also, every JAWS key command works in Chrome just like
in IE. You can just press alt + D for the address bar for example. I
will continue to play around with Google Chrome a little more, and I
will be ready to do an Audio tutorial for you guys. You will not
believe just how much better Google Chrome is over any other browser.
You will hear it with your own ears when I send you the tutorial

default browser. God bless and have a great night. Talk to all of you

I cannot access attachments when using Outlook in Office 2013. I am guessing that they are embedded. Anyone encountered this behaviour? Any work around?

It has just occurred to me that I have NEVER copied my dictionairy files from
1 version to another. I did not know that it should be done. No wonder I
kept wondering why I had to keep adding items, that I knew should be there,
into my dictionairy! I just assumed that it was a JAWS peculiarity.

So, would someone put me out my misery and provide some easy-to-follow
instructions on how to copy my dictionairy files to new versions?

Thanks much.

That would be okay but I have thousands of dictionary entries (enough

Note that at least in the case of dictionary and script files you don't
actually have to start over, you just have to copy the files yourself. I
don't know if there are enough differences to actually make that not work

Well, I must say that it is most gratifying to see that lots of other JAWS
users are upset with losing the Merge Utility! I hate to be the only one

I agree that the more people who let FS know about their feelings on this,

might make more of an impact but, if these complaints fall upon deaf ears,
so to speak, complaining won't change anything either, just as it hasn't
changed crap like this in, forever, with FS. I can tell you 1 way of making
1 of the most important people within Fs, Eric Damry, aware of how you feel,

Mike,

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the air

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By volume, I

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to fix
it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS over
time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one. Otherwise,
it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again, the
address is

support@freedomscientific.com

I admit I don't like being a rabble-rouser, but this really is annoying.

Hi Adrian,

I agree with you &, I don't find it acceptable either but, what else are we
supposed to do? We can bitch until the cows come home & it won't change the
fact, that Freedom Scientific already knows, they are not keeping up with
their own products. I've complained about various screw-ups for many years,
& when you send them a complaint you only get back an automated kiss ass
email stating how they're working to resolve the problem. It seems to me
that they have a need to stay on some kind of schedule, & that schedule is
to put out a new version of Jaws around November of each year whether it's
ready for consumer consumption or not!
Take care.

Sorry, Mike, but I don't find this statement acceptable. Ease of transition
from version to version is important. FS should have anticipated this
concern and figured out a solution before it became our problem. As I
believe it was Aidan who pointed out, it isn't as if the new features in
JAWS 17 are exactly compelling. There are potential problems involved in
skipping a version, so I still plan to install JAWS 17 one of these days.
Once again, I encourage anyone who feels as I do to contact FS Tech Support

Re: merge utility

HAMILTON

From this message, I get the impression that FS went into the development of
JAWS 17 quite ill-prepared! Clearly, the engineer was "asleep at the wheel"
when upgrades to V: 17 were being considered. Did no-one at FS take
responsibility for making sure that all of the parts would "play nice" with
each other once the "package" was all put together?

I don't know how appropriate or beneficial this could be, but if someone on
the list would be willing to craft a petition regarding this issue, we might
be able to get enough signitures to make an impact.

Sometimes, I just scratch my head at these kinds of decisions.

I certainly will sign any such petition, if it is created.

I'm looking to upgrade to Jaws 17, possibly during the college teaching
semester break, but that won't be for about 8 weeks for me at this point,
and I sure would like to have the use of the merge utilities feature again.
I know there have been issues with it at times, but the convenience and ease
of using it far outweighs any problems, in my opinion.

Hi,

I'm using Office 2016, and Outlook is working fine for me. In fact, it's
workikng better than Outlook 2013. I set messages to read automatically, so
when I'm in a message and press CTRL + D to delete the message, I'm placed
in the next message and Jaws begins to read it. This didn't work so well for
me in Outlook 2013.

I like the spell check in Word 2016... no need to use the alt key, just
press "C" to accept the suggested spelling correction or "I" to ignore.

Hi,

I upgraded to Office 2016 yesterday. Outlook works only occasionally. Most
of the time when you open a message, you can't read the message. JAWS just
says, "blank". 2016 had to be uninstalled and office 2013 reinstalled. Word
in 2016 seemed to work all right. They have not improved the spell checker
though. Just like 2013. No alt-key to use.

Dennis,

I downloaded google Chrome and tested
www.amc.com
which you mention. As you say, there's no link or edit field related to "sign in," and the JAWS cursor verbalizes only a graphic.

No question, Chrome works very fast and brings up a clean interface, but it isn't fully accessible, as previously claimed. IE11 will remain my default browser until someone demonstrates how to overcome these drawbacks or Google fixes them. I do recall that someone on this list explained why the JAWS cursor doesn't work well with Firefox, and I also recall there's a complicated fix, so the JAWS cursor problem may be a function of changing technology with which FS needs to catch up.

I had difficulty finding the right download link for my Windows 7, 64-bit machine. For anyone interested, here's the right link:
http://www.downloadx64.com/google-chrome-64-bit/

Now that I've installed Chrome, every time I open it, it tells me it isn't my default, but it moves on too fast for me even to locate a checkbox or other field in the event I one day do want it to be my default.

can one reliably get the file list to read correctly? I've also noticed

You can also find "Hide Empty Drives" in a tree view on the view tab of any
folder options Window for windows 7. You can get to this folder Options
menu by typing folder options in the windows search box. You will land on
the General tab first.

Be careful what else you check or uncheck in this area. When I set up
computers for our veterans, I always do the following so JAWS reads well in
folder navigation.

Before you start the steps below, you may want to change some of the view
options that there in that folder. I usually tell the titles in all my
folders to show in a list and not several columns. That is under the view
option on the menu bar or the ribbon.

Here we go!
For Windows 7
1. Open My Documents folder
2. Press alt T to open the tools menu.
3. Up arrow twice to land on the Folder options and press enter.
4. Press control T to change to the View Tag.
5. Now tab a couple times to place focus on the tree view.
6. Uncheck the first five items in that list. If you use J-say for Dragon
Naturally Speaking, then you will need to keep the classic view option
checked.
7. Arrow down a couple times and you will see the option for hide empty
drives and check it if you don't want to see a drive letter in computer of a
volume label that does not have a SD Card inserted or other internal , card
reader.
8. Continue arrowing down to the next item until you come to Hide Extensions
of Known File Types and make sure it is unchecked. Windows comes checked
like that out of the box. This means you will not see the extensions of a
file name like .docx, txt, etc. Very helpful in smaller folders where the
file names can start with the same names of folders and you wish to know if
it is a file or folder.
9. The last thing I uncheck is Show pop-up descriptions for folder and
desktop items.
10. I then want to save these changes to show in all my folder views so I
shift tab two times to the Reset folders button in windows 8 or something
similar in windows 7.
11. Press enter twice; once to start the option and the second time to agree
to change all folders to look like this one.
12. Now tab to the ok button and enter.

Now when you enter on a folder name, it won't say c colon backslash bla bla
bla before it says the name of the first title in the folder! Also, If you
are several folders deep, you will only hear the folders name spoken of the
drive you move to when you press the backspace to move up one level in your
list of folders.

For windows 8
1. Press the start menu and type "folder Options" in the windows search.
2. Press enter on the folder options choice 3. Now follow the steps above
starting with number 4.

Hope this helps your JAWS speak better.

Bissett, Tom <tom.bissett@...>

Hi, there are 2 settings you need to change under folder options the view tab.
You need to turn off "preview handlers in preview pane" and "pop-up description for folder and desktop items" these seem to be the problem items.

Ron, this is great info. I have a related question. I have been working with two individuals this week on Windows 7 computers. When we open the documents folder, Windows Explorer crashes while moving through a list of files. I used to see this on my Windows 7 machine also. I've seen reference to a remote procedure error message when the crash occurs. How can one reliably get the file list to read correctly? I've also noticed that sometimes, file extensions, file creation date, etc. will read when traversing the file list, and sometimes, it does not. Thanks for any assistance you can provide here.

You can also find "Hide Empty Drives" in a tree view on the view tab of any folder options Window for windows 7. You can get to this folder Options menu by typing folder options in the windows search box. You will land on the General tab first.

Be careful what else you check or uncheck in this area. When I set up computers for our veterans, I always do the following so JAWS reads well in folder navigation.

Before you start the steps below, you may want to change some of the view options that there in that folder. I usually tell the titles in all my folders to show in a list and not several columns. That is under the view option on the menu bar or the ribbon.

If you use J-say for Dragon Naturally Speaking, then you will need to keep the classic view option checked.
7. Arrow down a couple times and you will see the option for hide empty drives and check it if you don't want to see a drive letter in computer of a volume label that does not have a SD Card inserted or other internal , card reader.
8. Continue arrowing down to the next item until you come to Hide Extensions of Known File Types and make sure it is unchecked. Windows comes checked like that out of the box. This means you will not see the extensions of a file name like .docx, txt, etc. Very helpful in smaller folders where the file names can start with the same names of folders and you wish to know if it is a file or folder.
9. The last thing I uncheck is Show pop-up descriptions for folder and desktop items.
10. I then want to save these changes to show in all my folder views so I shift tab two times to the Reset folders button in windows 8 or something similar in windows 7.
11. Press enter twice; once to start the option and the second time to agree to change all folders to look like this one.
12. Now tab to the ok button and enter.

Now when you enter on a folder name, it won't say c colon backslash bla bla bla before it says the name of the first title in the folder! Also, If you are several folders deep, you will only hear the folders name spoken of the drive you move to when you press the backspace to move up one level in your list of folders.

For windows 8
1. Press the start menu and type "folder Options" in the windows search.
2. Press enter on the folder options choice 3. Now follow the steps above starting with number 4.

Hope this helps your JAWS speak better.

I agree, Tom. Sure, merge is nice and quick, but, as noted in an earlier post, I went without it last time to insure a clean transfer, and the inconvenience was minimal. Custom dictionaries were my main concern, and those are easily transferrable with a simple copy and paste.

With all the new changes and settings and how they interact make it more like trying to replace apples with oranges, oranges just don't work any more and there is no reason to bring them forward. So for this version you need to reconfigure. I am sure there will be a merge facility for moving from 17 to 18 because they will be more in sync.

Hello.

I'm very upset for fs removing the murg utility option in jaws 17.
They have the excuse that older version settings can know longer being important in 17. I don't know if I must laugh. If they new that it would happen, why did they not make a priority to implement a replacement tool wich could be in 17?
Now you have to manually change everything? Is it possible perhaps to use the settings packager to acomplish that?
I find it so tragic that they spend the hole year on smart navigation, wich is not even such a remarkable feature, really this was going to be more bennifishil to more people and now that its not ready it will affect everyone negatively.

I have been pressing alt-s, as in save when just after it asks do you with to open or save. Alt-s seems to work, and then if you press control-J in IE11, you'll go to your "view downloads," and there will be the list of your downloaded and downloading files. On each file you can press the right arrow to see if it is downloading, or if you hear "save" again just press space bar. Or, even if a download is stopped for se reason, you will be able to change that condition by using the arrow keys, usually right arrow to get to "resume" button.

Dennis,

I downloaded google Chrome and tested
www.amc.com
which you mention. As you say, there's no link or edit field related to
"sign in," and the JAWS cursor verbalizes only a graphic.

No question, Chrome works very fast and brings up a clean interface, but
it isn't fully accessible, as previously claimed. IE11 will remain my
default browser until someone demonstrates how to overcome these drawbacks
or Google fixes them. I do recall that someone on this list explained why
the JAWS cursor doesn't work well with Firefox, and I also recall there's
a complicated fix, so the JAWS cursor problem may be a function of
changing technology with which FS needs to catch up.

I had difficulty finding the right download link for my Windows 7, 64-bit
machine. For anyone interested, here's the right link:
http://www.downloadx64.com/google-chrome-64-bit/

Now that I've installed Chrome, every time I open it, it tells me it isn't
my default, but it moves on too fast for me even to locate a checkbox or
other field in the event I one day do want it to be my default.
