Your computer is telling you something is wrong. Look up the beep codes for
your computer -- the brand name should probably be enough if you have it,
though they're all fairly standard. There's something wrong with your
hardware if you're getting a double beep, but my only copy of those codes is
in hard copy and the roommate is currently offline in a data reindexing
cycle or I'd get her to help me look it up.

Subject: Very Strange Issue With Old Windows XP Computer

Hello, everyone.

I have an old Windows XP computer that I use for logging as a ham radio
operator, and I have just experienced a very strange problem with this
computer.

The computer worked fine last night, but this morning, when I turn on
the computer, I can't get to any of the programs on the machine.

If I turn on the computer, I can hear the hard drive start to engage,
but after waiting for a few seconds, nothing happens, other than a
double beep which I'm sure indicates something. . Jaws will not come
up, so I can't read the screen. And, I don't have any sighted
assistance here to look at the screen.

Has anyone experienced this sort of thing before, and if so, can you
tell me what might of happened? Most important, how do you get the
computer back into normal operation?

hmmm, sounds like you may have lost the power from the motherboard battery. its a 2032 battery and if it dies, youloose all of the cmos settings like the time for example. you may need to replace the battery and then set the cmos time and that may fix the problem. unless it cannot recover all of the other settings to tell what is exactly installed on your system. i would for sure purchase a new cmos battery and try that first.

Outlook 2010 with JAWS 17

Mark Arnold ABG

Hello List,

I am running the latest version of JAWS Professional 17 on a Windows 7 machine.  When I open Outlook 2010 JAWS announces Outlook (safe mode).  Does anyone know why JAWS is saying this?  Everything works fine but I can’t figure out why JAWS is announcing this safe mode information.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

The facebook layout in my Pac Mate Omni is easwy to follow, with

please let me know what you do. I want to contact him individually in
a chat, not as part of a group. How do I do this from a desktop pc? Is
there a way to access a basic html version of facebook? And while I'm
at it what about a basic html version of Hotmail? I can't use the
current web interface because it relies on screen taps. I'm using
windows 7 and jaws 14.

Adrian and all,
I don’t know if it is related or not, but I’ve suddenly encountered a problem with PayPal  and Lyft. All of a sudden, Lyft tells me my payment was declined (actually, it went through, then they issued me a refund and are now telling me I owe them the money they refunded, but when I try to pay it, using paypal, I get the same thing you are describing, a page that wants credit card info. I contacted both Lyft and PayPal, all I got from PayPal was the advice to clear my cache and browsing history. PayPal still works with Uber, however.
Sorry if this is unrelated to your issue, but I thought I’d mention it, because it looks like something is going on with PayPal or somewhere.

Thanks, Mike, but this is the situation where you’re on another website, you’ve put an item in the cart and now you’re going through the checkout process. You select PayPal as your payment method, and then you’re taken to a PayPal page. The “classic” option isn’t shown here. My past experiences were that at this point, the log-in page would appear. Now it doesn’t. Instead, I’m getting a page with a log-in line that JAWS does not recognize as a button. I press enter on it anyway, but I’m taken to the credit card info page that I don’t want.

This looks like a change at PayPal because I encountered it both times I tried to complete a transaction today, on two different websites. I haven’t used either website before, and I like to use PayPal in such cases because of the payment info shield it provides.

All of a sudden, Paypal isn't working for me at a critical point. It used to be that when going through a website's checkout process, I'd click on Paypal and be taken to a page where I entered my email and password to complete the transaction. Now I can't get to those edit fields. Instead, I am taken to the option where you fill out your credit card info, which is a second Paypal option. The button to the log-in page takes me to the same page as this credit card info page. Sighted assistance confirms that the button to log in does take you to the page I want, but JAWS apparently can't work with it. I've tried with IE11 and Chrome. Win7.

Has anyone else encountered this obstacle and maybe even found a way around it?

Re: fillable pdf forms

Brad Martin

Do this first.

1. You didn't mention which browser you're using, but if it's coming up in a web browser, save the PDF by choosing Save As from the browser's file menu. (There should be something like Save As anyway.) Make sure you save the file where you can find it--desktop or documents or wherever.

2. Open the file you saved, rather than the HTTP location. If the form will allow saving, save whenever you want. If it won't, you'll get a warning that you will lose your entries and you should print the form once it is completed. That will depend, not on you, but on how your form was created to work.

you download the scripts they have an installer for your version of jaws. After you install the scripts and run the program it will come up with a dialog list and the 3rd option is the continue trial option that you hit enter on. This will activate your trial for 30 days.

To turn on automatic calculations (by default it is on)

Press alt+f

Move with up arrow key to Options, open it,

move with down arrow key to Formula tab.

Then press TAB once

There it is: checkbox automatic calculation. Mark it with space ant then enter to close the window

To maximize Excel program window

Alt+space bar, arrow up to option Maximize, enter

Unfortunately i don’t know how to maximise the Excel sheet window.

Hi,

Excel 2016, JAWS 17, Windows 10 – no problems with summing.

Maybe the ribbon is minimized? Or the excel sheet or the Excel window is to small and JAWS can’t read the text?

Other possibilities are

you have turned on „Show Formulas“  (options on ribbon)

or automatic calculation is turned off in Excel options.

Or the cell format is text.(application key, arrow to format, enter, ....)

I can answer one of those questions. The one about Show Formulas. There is a keystroke for this. It’s the control key plus the accent grave key. That’s the key to the left of the number one on the keyboard. It’s a toggle. Hit it once it shows formulas, hit it again it shows the values.

Re: speaking of YouTube...

Kevin Wollenweber <dancingweed@...>

I could be wrong, but there are a lot of things about You Tube that is unaccessible to us without any sight at all.  I’ve never had the kind of funds that allow me to have a video camera and “broadcast” on it, so to speak or create videos and all that.  Sighted people do this kind of stuff with ease, but, like someone has already said here, all I can do is search out something, like the occasional tutorial or, rather, demonstration.  You Tube is yet another entertainment “channel”, as if you could own a TV where you can press a button or two and actually watch only what *YOU* want to watch when you want to watch it.  But, like those kinds of TV’s, what you want to watch or listen to is not a priority.  It is majority rule and if they like isn’t your cup o’ meat, well, you’re lost.
