Re: Help needed with a focus bluetooth display and jaws

Well, the first tech support person said she couldn't help me because
every laptop handles Bluetooth differently. No matter what I asked
her, that was her story and she was sticking to it.

The second tech support guy walked me through all the various braille
settings in jaws then opened a ticket and said someone would get back
to me within 48 hours. I hope they will have someone call me back who
can get a little more technical because I suspect the problem is in my
com port settings.

I don't mean to bash FS tech support because I've gotten some great
service from them over the years. It's just that it's something of a
crap shoot with whoever answers the phone when you call.

Hi David and Les,

Yes, my laptop does support Bluetooth. In fact I went through the
steps in the focus user guide and completed the pairing successfully.
It seems like it should be working.

One question I had is there seems to be some issue of in versus out
when configuring the comports. Since the focus may be used for both
input and output I'm not certain what the port setting should look
like. Right now the settings are 57600,n,8,1 which matches the
settings I see under devices in the control panel for the focus. I
just don't know where to go next with this problem. I'm ready to say
to heck with the Bluetooth and just resign myself to using the display
with the USB connection.

Hi All,

I recently got a focus display and have been using it successfully
with the USB connection. However, despite several extended googling
sessions and multiple calls to FS for tech assistance, I am unable to
get the display functioning via the Bluetooth connection.

I have repeatedly paired and removed the display, checked and messed
around with com port settings and banged my head on the desk out of
sheer frustration.

As I said, I know the display is working via USB with the laptop. It
is also working via Bluetooth with my iPhone. But for my life, I
cannot get it working via Bluetooth with my windows 7 laptop. There is
a tech support ticket open at FS though I'm not very optimistic.

If anyone here would be willing to help me I will be very grateful.

Thanks much in advance.

Re: Help needed with a focus bluetooth display and jaws

Milton Ota <mota1252@...>

Did FS confirm that you have the latest firmware on your Focus display?

Have you done a complete Windows Update, especially checking to see if you have the latest USB drivers from Microsoft?

You didn't state which model of the Focus you have, whether you have the Classic which has the wiz wheels at the end of the display or the newer model which has the rocker switches at the ends.

The Focus Blu all models with the rocker switches at the end should be running firmware 5.71.

Your response will help us better.

Hi, Mitch.

Feliciano Godoy posted the following here. I haven't tried it myself yet, and I don't know if it also applied to the tool tip:

There is a way to remove the windows 10 upgrade button from the system tray. You Have to go in the control panel and axis the taskbar and system tray notifications settings. There you can disable the windows 10 upgrade button from being on the system tray.

Hi Kimber,

I had another thought. Is your laptop an older machine? If so, you may
need a Bluetooth dongle before you can get the Focus to work with your
computer. I had to do this with an older PC I had, as I couldn't configure
Bluetooth on the PC itself as it didn't directly support Bluetooth. If you
know that Bluetooth is supported, then disregard my suggestion.

, Dave. I thought I had an old copy of that, but must have deleted it. It
should be fairly easy to find with a search. I'm still trying to get rid of
the remnants of AVG, that system restore fixed JAWS, but really did a number
on me. I found some more physical remains last night, and deleted them, but
I don't touch the registry by hand. Norton once had a good cleaner, but the
last time I used it it went postal! I haven't trusted the category since.

No shipping charge and next day delivery made it a good deal.

Some of you gave suggestions and others may be interested in some details.

It does the basics that I want

. A single button to do the simple scanning of 1 document and another button to do the scanning of several documents into 1 PDF file.

There is no old type menu line or ribbon menu. The dialogue box has the conventional buttons and combo box that you can tab to -- close, help, scan and custom.

All I needed to do was change the default output file to PDF.

When you change one of the combo box choices:

Full Auto, Home, Office and Professional

the dialogue box objects change.

Once the scan is complete, the file is put into "My Pictures" and JAWS announces that the "My Pictures" folder has come up. I just highlight the file name and use the JAWS OCR on the PDF document.

The buttons to copy (directly to the printer) and send to e-mail, do not seem to work for me, not with Windows 7 and 10. Maybe I will figure it out later.

These two tasks can be done with Windows. Highlight the scanned file and use the Windows Application Key to select either "Print" or "send to" e-mail.

The only online help is when in a dialogue box, select the "Help" button to get more explanation of each object in that dialogue box. For help on other topics, I had to go to the web for a user guide.

I am pleased with this new scanner to replace the 20 year old clunker I gave up. It is smaller, quieter and faster.

It is smaller, quieter and faster.

Some time ago we were discussing what was supposed to be a dandy, safe
registry cleaner. I thought I kept the thread (you should see my mailbox),
but can't find it now. I think it began with the letter W.

Mario

does the jaws key plus windows key plus f4 always report to FS, and does it happen transparently, because I never new this occurs.

is there a setting to control this feature, because I'm never asked when I use it.

I press windows-insert-f4 to unload/reload JAWS. Usually that fixes it.
