Hi Michael,

Are the 2 computers linked to the same Dropbox account?  If so once Dropbox is running and connected to the internet the 2 computers should sync up.  If this doesn't happen you might have to go to the Dropbox website and link the laptop back up to your Dropbox account.  Steps are below.
Using JAWS 2020 and Google Chrome, I do the following:

On Dropbox site, after logging in, enter on Account. This expands the account menu.

Enter on Settings

Enter on Security tab, to select it.

There are several other settings before the list of devices. Either scroll past them, or look for the word "devices" on the page.

Devices currently linked to Dropbox are listed from the most recently used to the oldest. Each device has an indication of when it was last using Dropbox,
and each device has an "unlink" button.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

I also forgot to mention in my last post that my desktop pc running Windows 10 pro was unaffected by the outage.  I just have to figure out how to resync the folders in drop box to my laptop computer.  It’s one of those set it and forget it things.  I really didn’t try to resync the folders from my desktop pc to my laptop pc because my friend’s equipment failed so he couldn’t update his oldies shows.

That is because you have to go to the Dropbox icon in your system tray, go to Preferences and tell Dropbox to use File Explorer and not their new Dropbox app which is not very accessible.

Here is what I do:

I press Jaws Key + F11 to bring up the system tray, go to Dropbox or press D and press enter.

You may hear that  you have to press enter again, if so do that and you should get a number of options you can tab through.

Press tab until you hear Access and manage your Dropbox settings Button, activate by pressing enter

Now from the menu which opens select "Preferences, this opens Dropbox preferences and you are on the General tab.

Tab and the first option is "Start Dropbox on system startup check box‑ checked"

Tab again and you get "Open the desktop app when starting Dropbox check box‑ not checked", this is most likely checked, not sure if it has to be unchecked, but I uncheck it.

Tab again and you get "Microsoft Office add-in", then "Show Dropbox as a save location in Microsoft Office check box‑ not checked", you can check or uncheck this as you please

The next item is "Dropbox Badge", it's a combo box which by default I think is set to "Always Show" and I don't think there is any reason to change this.

Now comes "Language", another combo box and I would leave it on "System Language".

This next item now is the most important:

Open folders in: Combo box‑

File Explorer

By default this says Dropbox, but since I believe a lot of the modern Dropbox app functionality is not that accessible I prefer that the Dropbox folder simply opens in File Explorer if I activate the Dropbox icon on the desktop and this is what determines this. Make sure it is set to File Explorer, tab to OK and activate it and you are now back to the old behaviour where pressing enter on the Dropbox icon opens your Dropbox folder.

Well, the good news is that it is installed and I have a desktop icon for dropbox.

The bad news is that once again when you click on the desktop icon, nothing happens.

I have several drop boxes and I cannot access any oof them since I can’t get the desktop icon to launch for me.

If and or when I hear back from dropbox, I’ll share with everyone of course.

In the mean time, if anyone has any further suggestions?

Please keep the coming.

Many thanks to all.

Hi Ron,

A silly question I know but, did you get it installed?  Did you create an account on the Dropbox website?  Do you know if it's running?  Look in the task manager or the system tray for this.  This is not a plug--N- play program.  Also, when installing it will take a few minutes at the minimum and you'll need to use the Jaws cursor to find any information during the install process.

Hello to my fellow JAWS subscribers.

I just grabbed drop box from

www.ninite.com

I click on the desktop icon, but nothing happens.

Just curious if I can get some drop box help to open up drop box and so on from a screen reader’s point of view?

I’ve written to drop box about this issue, and I await their reply to my letter.

Nor am I.

But as a working computer tech I can say, without any hesitation, that third-party security suites can often cause unanticipated issues, and no one really knows why.  I have never seen Windows Security do this, which is unsurprising, as it's part of Windows and gets tested as part of it.

My main point is that what you hear about Windows Defender, or to be completely accurate I should say Windows Defender as implemented prior to Windows 8, is not accurate when it comes to Windows Defender or Windows Security as implemented since Windows 8.  The claims that Defender was a substandard option were quite accurate up through the Windows 7 era if you wanted "maximum possible protection."  This is no longer the case.  And for anyone, who likes anything, who wants to say something like, "But {my favored product} ranked above Windows Security in {specific lab's tests at a specific time}," I say look at more testing cycles and at multiple labs.  Where products rank changes from testing cycle to testing cycle and with precisely what is being used as the test samples.  The difference between number one and number five (or even number ten) on a top ten list is likely to be negligible in real world situations.

There are lots of good products out there, and there's nothing wrong with choosing a third-party suite if that's what you prefer.  But don't make the mistake of believing that one testing ranking for one testing cycle means that your chosen product will stay in that position, because it won't.  They all shuffle around.

Quietman7, a security expert who's a very active contributor on Bleeping Computer, wrote the following, which is well worth reading: Reflections on Antivirus/Antimalware Testing & Comparisons

Then, taking what he wrote into consideration, have a look at where your chosen security suite falls in the most recent, and a couple of previous, testing results for these (or other, there are more) antivirus/security suite testing labs:

AV Test

AV Comparatives

SE Labs  (Reports Page)

MRG Effitas  (360 Protection Testing Category)

I have found no good reason to change from using Windows Defender.
So long as it is all turned on, and one uses basic common sense, it works great!
I used to pay for Eset, until Windows 10 and Windows Defender came along not to mention the accessibility went down the tubes.
I've never had a virus, and it has caught suspicious software the few times I've downloaded something that wasn't safe.
Why spend money when it isn't necessary.

I’m with Mike, that would be a total pain.

And like Mike, I needed the reminder to know what the issue was.

There are too many emails on this list to keep track without the context being included.

I’m glad they are paying attention.

With Jaws 2019 and 2020, none of my standard desktop shortcuts that I had made would work.  I even had Eric Damery remote in to see the issue and they never really got it resolved.  But, for some reason, it is resolved now in Jaws 2021.  That too was a case of only a few people had the issue.  I hope your issue gets resolved sooner.

Sorry, it was the original topic.

When jaws starts up, you cannot get at the menus.

When jaws is set to start at the logon screen and to start for this user, insert+j or any other key is not available to get at the menus.

When you unload and reload it, it works just fine.

When I started the topic, I had a huge rant about it!!

You will see it from the start.

It doesn’t happen to everyone, in fact, I have only found two other people that it happens to.

Nevertheless, it is a bug, and should be fixed, given the amount of money we pay for the product.

As you can see from my previous post, this has been confirmed by Vispero.

Hi,

For what it’s worth I personally use Viper, it’s a paid anti-virus solution, but I’ve found it to be fairly accessible. There are a few things which don’t work perfectly, but on the whole I’ve found it more accessible than some other paid solutions I’ve tried which are out there (like Bitdefender etc). I do have to confess though honestly I don’t really often have to physically open the program and use it. mainly if I want to start or stop a scan, turn off the firewall  or for some reason want to exit viper I can do this all from its menu options from the windows system tray, but the few times I have had to open up the program I’ve been able to navigate ok, but again, I haven’t really played around with many of its more advanced features. I don’t notice any slow down when its scanning, but by the same token I have a  fairly decent PC,  so not sure how it might  be on a slower system. The other observation is when it is scanning, if you open the program you can see it is performing a scan, but you can’t see  how far through the scan it currently is. I saw a post on another forum where another screen reader user said that they are apparently very open to accessibility feedback too.

Unfortunately I am away from home now and can’t pull up that report. I can tell you that it was the week of Christmas, not much was going on, and I hadn’t downloaded much.

Also, something I found interesting for people who use browsers other than Edge or possibly old versions of IE. The malware protection of Windows defender doesn’t extend to other browsers.

Anyway, this is an argument that has been played out on this list many times. Perhaps I phrased my question incorrectly when I asked people what they liked. I was most concerned about the accessibility of different solutions. I have used defender and I know how it works. I am not ruling out continuing to use defender. What I am doing is saying, “hey, It’s been a while. Maybe I should look at all of my solutions and see what would work best for me at this point and time.” I’m glad people like it. I’m glad it’s come a long way since I first played with it 10 or so years ago. And believe it or not I’m really not trying to attack someone’ else’s product of choice.

Would it be possible for you to run the technical support tool under the Jaws help menu in order to send us a report so that we can look in to this further?
This is not the first time I have seen the issue. I actually experience it myself.
Regards,
Cory Jackson

you will see below, that after two versions of jaws, (2020 and 2021), vispero has eventually admitted, that this problem in fact, does exist.
apparently, they are looking into it.

Hi Richard.

Thanks. The link you sent makes sense, but I’m not sure I want to go to the trouble. I may try it first, just to see if I can. Most likely, I’ll end up going to plan B.

Here is a link to an explanation of how to do this. Hopefully it will make enough sense.

Hi all,

This may sound like a silly request from a non-tech JAWS user, but here goes: Is it possible for me to create a link in a word document that will take the person reading it  to another place in that same word document. In other words, I’d like to create a same-page link.

I’m trying to write our family history, and my grown children don’t want it printed. They want me to send them the document so they can simply read it online. I have a table of contents and would like to create a link from each content to the section it references. Is this too convoluted, or is it simple enough for me to accomplish?

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. It sounds a lot easier. I might try the link just to see if I can do it—but more likely I’ll put the star and let the family do a search. Especially if plan A doesn’t work out for me.

Thanks to every one else who responded.

Hi Shirley-

Greetings!  Just a suggestion, but why not just use the * key.    Then all the reader would have to do is do a search for * using ctrl + F and then just hit that combo again.  The chapters could be designated something like this:

*Chapter 1  My Youth

*Chapter 2  The Teen Age Years

Just a thought, but I use the * key all the time in most of my documents...it's a real timesaver!!!

Hay, Thanks for the information about Shift F6 and F6. That should help a lot. Are there any other keyboard short cuts that I am not aware of?

Hi,

I'm not sure why people are saying iTunes isn't accessible, although it may
not be the best layout for a screen reader, as far as I'm aware its fully
accessible. I don't use it much and maybe there are features I'm not using
which aren't accessible, but I can add music to the library, create
playlists, transfer music to my iphone and manage my iPhone from within
itunes all without any sighted assistance using only jaws. I know others
have already suggested using shift and tab to navigate, also F6 and shift F6
are two other really handy keystrokes which move you between sections.
Rather than having to cycle through each option as you do when tabbing, F6
quickly moves you from one section to another, meaning less key presses to
navigate between different sections of the program.

Hi yes you are all correct apple has made no attempts to make their itues
software accessible with JAWS!

One solution I would do if you have aira is have them help you by having
aira log into the computer with team viewer and then telling the aria agent
what you ant to do for example moving music from widnwos into itues and then
having them transfer it to your iphone or ipdad.

I know most of you want to do thsi independently but Apple will not make any
changes to their program.

Unfortunately, if you have a mac then it works properly, howveer most people
wnat a pc and they should make changes to. I wonder if we should all write
apple and demand they fix this.

I know the NFB sued apple for accessability and maybe it's time for that to
hapen again or the acb necds to put a fire uncder them!

I hope this heops.

Hi,

I solved my problem where Jaws wouldn''t read my  email messages automatically.

I turned the DECtalk off and back on.

That solved the problem.

Thank you richard for replying.
