Removing lock screen from Windows 8.1
Cristóbal
Hello list,
I’m trying to set up a Windows 8.1 machine and have more or less got everything set up and am now trying to get rid of the lock screen that pops up when turning on the desktop, but am running into difficulties. I go through the prompts of adding the snag-in as apparently whatever group policy that is needed was not included in my Win 8.1. When I go through the steps however, I get an error message more or less saying that this snag-in may not vve used with this version of Windows 8.1. To manage accounts for this computer, use the user accounts tool in the control panel. This isn’t getting me anywhere though. I’ve poked around online and it seems that this issue isn’t unusual. Anyway, most solutions entail adding the group policy via the snag-in that I explained can’t be installed. I also want to disable the windows hints, but again, same issue. Has anyone delt with this issue and if so, how did they resolve it? Using Jaws 16 if it makes any difference. And yes, I know I can also try upgrading to Windows 10, but don’t wish to do so at the moment Any help would be appreciated. No, it's free if acquired within the first year. I don't know how updates will work, but this is something different for Ms--a long-term platform, rather than an OS which will be superseded within two years or so

A few things: * Yes, you'll need to use Narrator. But before installing Windows 10, remove JAWS first (all versions except 16.0.4350). * You might be thinking of Windows 10 as a subscription service. The good news is that it isn't - once upgraded within a year, Windows 10 will be yours forever. Cheers, Joseph

Re: Microsoft outlook
Adrian Spratt
Some time ago, David Whitehead posted the following detailed instructions on how to create a message rule in Outlook 2010.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Message rules I have made a few changes to the creating a message filter in Microsoft Outlook 2010&2007 here's how I create a message rule/filter in Microsoft outlook 2010. First I create the folder, By doing the following; Ctrl+shift+e=create new folder. Now type in the name you wish to assign to the folder. Tab once you will hear; Folder contains: Mail and Post Items This is okay, no need to change, Now tab again, You will hear something like; Tree view, and then inbox, and all of the other folders are listed, So, I arrow up to personal folders, or, you could press the letter "p"=personal folders, And then tab to okay, press enter. So now you're folder is created. Next we need to assign a rule/filter to the newly created folder, By doing the following; 1, highlight a message which you wish to create a folder for, Example; One of the messages from this group. Email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:Email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com 2, press applications key, up arrow and enter on, Rules sub menu, Or, you could right arrow to open. Another way to do this is: Press applications key, press the letter "s" And then press the letter "u", which will directly place you into the message wizard. Here you will see the following screen; Always Move Messages From: email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com Always Move Messages To: email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com Create Rule... Manage Rules & Alerts... you now need to down arrow and enter on, create rule.... Note, as I indicated, if you use the shortcuts, the letter "s"&"u" no need to arrow anywhere, since you're in the message rule wizard. 3. you will now see a screen; Create Rule When I get e mail with all of the selected conditions From email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com by default this box is unchecked you can check this box. When I get e mail with all of the selected conditions Subject contains [email clients with screen readers] Outlook 2007, this box is unchecked by default I would leave this box as it is. When I get e mail with all of the selected conditions Sent to email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com this box is unchecked by default you can check this box. Do the following Display in the New Item Alert window by default this box is unchecked, you can leave as is. Do the following:Play a selected sound: this box is unchecked by default, you can check this box, Browse... Here you could browse for a specific sound; Move the item to folder:this box is unchecked by default, however you need to check this box, Folder...press enter here, Now, you can arrow to the particular folder, Or, you can letter navigate, Then tab okay, press enter. OK Cancel Advanced Options... now you need to tab and enter on, Advanced options... 4. You will see the following screen; Rules Wizard Which condition's do you want to check? Step 1: Select condition's checked on this computer only checked from email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com not checked with RE: [email clients with screen readers] Outlook 2007,... in the subject checked sent to email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com not checked with RE: [email clients with screen readers] Outlook...in the subject or body not checked through the specified account not checked sent only to me where my name is in the To box not checked not checked marked as importance not checked marked as sensitivity not checked flagged for action not checked where my name is in the Cc box not checked where my name is in the To or Cc box not checked where my name is not in the To box not checked with specific words in the body not checked with specific words in the message header not checked with specific words in the recipient's address not checked with specific words in the sender's address Step 2: Edit the rule description (click an underlined value) Apply this rule after the message arrives from email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com and sent to email clients with screen readers@yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com <mailto:email clients with screen readers%40yahoogroups.com and on this computer only play Windows Notify.wav and move it to the email clients with screen readers folder and stop processing more rules Cancel < Back Next Finish This screen is fine, Just tab next and press enter. 5. now you will see the following screen; Rules Wizard What do you want to do with the message? Re: Microsoft outlook
Kane Brolin
Aside from just the sound that notifies you of an incoming message,
many functions within Microsoft Office can come with sound alerts--including when a file is saved or printed. To have full sound feedback capability in Office, you need to download and install the Office Sounds add-in, which can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7015. This works in every edition of Office I have ever used, up to and including 2013. (Not sure about how to implement this in Office 365.) Kind regards, -Kane

David:
I use Outlook 2013 in my workplace. And while I certainly would not call myself a power user, I have created several folders, and I make it a point to move manually different kinds of messages into these different folders after they have entered my inbox. I go to the Create Folder wizard by pressing Alt, o, and n in succession. . As soon as I have done this, I reach a dialog box where I can name my folder. Then I can tab a couple of times to arrive at the Tree View where I can choose the level in the folder hierarchy where my new folder is to reside. In other words, just by using my Arrow keys to manipulate this Tree View, I can choose whether my new folder will be accessible directly from the root or whether it will be a subfolder within my Inbox or within some other core folder. From experience, I also know that if I goof up when placing a newlycreated folder, I can move it by manipulating the Folder ribbon as well so it is fixed the way I want. David, I know there is a chance you are asking something more complex: such as, is there a way to make it so messages from different list addresses go automatically into a prescribed folder other than the general inbox? I'm sure a way does exist to create a rule for this purpose, but I don't know what it is. That would require input from a power user. Kind regards, -Kane

Your "mobile version" suggestion works well. The other day I tried Jimmy's suggestion, which also worked well. This morning, I tried yours and found that the mobile version is very close to the print version I've missed for so long. I wish I'd figured it out for myself, but I'm glad you did and that you posted it. You can make it easier to get to the mobile version link and then to the article's beginning. 1. Create a placemarker at the mobile version link. You do this by placing focus on the link, then pressing shift-control-k to bring up the JAWS placemarker dialog. Tab to "Add," then keep tabbing. You should check the box for all pages on the website and to anchor to text. In the future, each time you link to an article, press k to get right away to the mobile version link. 2. Getting to the start of the article. After clicking on the mobile version link this morning, I found that pressing 1 twice, then 6, landed focus just a line or two above the first sentence. This worked twice, so maybe it's a constant, at least until the next website upgrade. After that, I pressed "say all" and experienced no interruptions.

Some time ago, there was a thread about changes to the NY Times website that made navigation difficult and the "print" versions of articles impossible to find. The Times promised me, and presumably others, that they were working on making fixes. The problem has only become worse since then. I'm posting this query to find out if others are experiencing a particular problem. Unlike in the past, there is no "print" link in an article. However, there is a "more" link. After clicking on this link, sighted readers can see a link to "print." I can click on the "more" link, but the "print" link is still elusive. I found it just now, but once I managed to click on it (I had to go into links list), all I got was a printer dialog. Escaping out of the dialog, I found the page was laid out exactly the way the main article page is. So, is anyone doing better at finding and using the "print" versions of NY Times articles? If so, would you explain how? Any other suggestions? (I know about the NFB version, but it lacks the links within articles that can be invaluable.) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: learning to do scripting
Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
From the little I've seen, it's fairly high-level--more plain language than machine language. There was a little script making the rounds on one of these lists a while back for quieting JAWS, before the ins-space came along. Some of you probably remember what I'm talking about.Ted -----Original Message----- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Andre Jarreau via Jfw Sent: Thursday, July 30, 2015 9:08 PM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' And especially thank you for volunteering to take us through scripting...grin Andre -----Original Message----- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Paul Martz via Jfw Sent: Thursday, July 30, 2015 8:01 PM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' Cc: Paul Martz Subject: RE: learning to do scripting There is a mailing list for JAWS scripting: http://www.freelists.org/list/jawsscripts I intend to learn scripting in the near future, as soon as I can clear some time to work on it. I have made a living as a computer programmer for the past 30 years, so I don't expect it to be difficult. It will be "just another programming language". But if you don't have experience as a programmer, then I imagine you might find it quite a challenge. You would need to not only learn the JAWS scripting language, but you'd also need to learn basic programming concepts such as syntax, build errors, iteration, conditionals, variables, data structures, programming interfaces, software design principles, project management, etc. These are all things I learned in high school and college back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, so they are ingrained in me, but they would present a significant, perhaps insurmountable, learning curve for someone new to the area and self-educating more or less in isolation. Huh. After reading that, I guess I sound like some kind of know it all! Ha ha. That was not my intent. I was just trying to point out that JAWS scripting is, in essence, computer programming. And that's something most people spend years learning how to do well. I just want you to know what you're getting into. -Paul -----Original Message-----to begin with, how do you know what to code? I haven't looked lately, but I think a manual was once part of the JAWS package, and I know one exists.

Not sure if you got a more intelligent response than Kevin's. First, touch the Windows key and type System sound You will get an option something like, change system sounds. Hit enter and tab twice. Use your tab key to navigate to the tree view, if you have not landed on it already. Arrow down until you find new mail notification. Tab twice to see what sound if any is selected. Any WAV sound will do but the default is Windows Notify.wav If no sound is set you will need to, arrow down until you find a sound you like or tab twice to browse for a sound and set it. Don't forget to save your changes after setting the sound you will need to tab to the apply button and use it. HTH Jeff jeff@teameei.org
