To check your settings for the Virtual Ribbon Menu in JAWS:
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter. Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to Open Miscellaneous. Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that this setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS. To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the letter D as in dog. Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and Down Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to work properly. If it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and press Enter to save these settings. I hope this helps you. Bill White billwhite92701@dslextreme.com

I think you're right on several counts. Whether to update or not is a personal decision. My question was more a fact finding mission to understand what I'd be getting if I updated. I'm the same way before I buy anything--I want to know what it's going to do--either for me or to me--when I get it. I also think that if I were running Windows 8.1, I'd be more likely to update just to get back some of the Windows 7 feel and functionality I lost with Windows 8.1. But since I have Windows 7 already, I think I'll just wait until I hear something compelling about 10, or until July 29, 2016 when the upgrade ceases to be free. Brad

Hi, Correct (Gabriel Aul from Microsoft tweeted that there will be a service release this month). As for bad side of continuous refinements and updates, that's one thing I'm slightly worried about: accessibility issues. For this reason, I advised some knowledgeable blind people (including some JAWS users here) to stay as Windows Insiders to help Microsoft iron out accessibility problems before the general public receives updates. But as with any software releases, Windows 10 will have flaws (a trending topic on various social networking sites and newspaper articles is privacy concerns, and for screen reading, Microsoft did something with UIA where performance degradation was observed for some screen reader users). As for upgrade period: yes, Windows 10 will be free for properly licensed users until July 2016. Many would say, "take advantage of Windows 10 now". However, I and others would like to advise you to hold off for a while (especially for screen reader users; for JAWS users, please don't upgrade until JAWS 17 comes out; there are certain things JAWS 16.0.4350 doesn't support, including not reading Start search results automatically (to fix this, JAWS may need to listen to a specific UIA event), no forms mode nor virtual cursor in Edge (Microsoft Edge is filled with UIA) and not announcing Action Center notifications for some users (to fix this, FS may need to refine which controls are toasts, and toasts in Windows 10 are not tool tips anymore, rather they are actual windows)). Cheers, Joseph P.S. Let me know if I spoke too much geekspeak. -----Original Message----- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt via Jfw Sent: Saturday, August 8, 2015 9:43 PM To: The Jaws for Windows support list. <jfw@lists.the-jdh.com> Cc: Adrian Spratt <Adrian@AdrianSpratt.com> Subject: RE: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person? Continuous refinements will be the norm from now on, which are good thing and a bad thing. Virtual desktops (called Task View) are a way to group running apps together into workspaces. In other words, you can open multiple desktops with apps for different purposes opened in each desktop. By default, when you install Windows 10 and with multiple desktops opened, pressing Alt+TAB will cycle among apps on the current desktop (go to Settings/System/Multitasking to change this behavior). This isn't the same as having two or more user accounts (I for one use two user accounts and switch between them for various purposes). Hi, I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and I just have a question (with a lot of background first): So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program; you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to indicate that Cortana is iffy at best. So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where Windows 7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," apply here? I'd really honestly like to know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning computer to see if it will still function. P.S. Hi, Les and Barbara. Could this problem with pressing:

ALT plus V, followed by C, followed by V, be related to whether the Virtual Ribbon is checked or unchecked in your Default Configuration Menu? This keyboard shortcut may work only if the Virtual Ribbon option under Miscellaneous is unchecked. Bill White billwhite92701@dslextreme.com

Yes - go to Settings (Windows+I)/Ease of Access/Other Options, then go to Show Notifications For combo box. You can select between 5 seconds to 5 minutes (I may need to send a feedback regarding this control, as there is a delay when changing them). Cheers, Joseph P.S. Hi Adrian,

I think it's more the age of the computer being updated than whether it's Windows 7 or 8.1... I have an old Lenovo laptop... 10 years old, and I don't think I'd like to update it to Windows 10... I had Windows 7 on it and updated it to Windows 8.1 and was sorry because it ran so slow with Windows 8.1. If you have a relatively new laptop or desktop running Windows 7 I wouldn't hesitate updating to Windows 10, if you're so inclined. Cheers, Russell

While I did get accustomed to Windows 8.1, I wasn't crazy about it. I updated to Windows 10, and like the fact that the start menu is back. When I press the Windows key, I am placed in a search field, similar to Windows 7. If I down arrow, I am placed in a list of my 6 most used programs, which is really convenient. I am finding Cortana to work quite well... when she isn't able to answer my query, she opens up a search page in Bing... wish the search results could be switched to Google, but at least for now, Bing is the only choice. I am looking forward to trying Edge once Jaws support is available for it. I think whether or not to update to Windows 10 is a very personal choice, and, I also feel that we shouldn't be advised not to update just because we use Jaws. Having said that though, I don't think I would have updated if my laptop wasn't fairly new. I've been reading the various forums and many people are experiencing troubles with the Windows 10 update, not only users of assistive technology, so, as I say, the choice to update is a personal one. For me, I'm glad I updated, but we'll see how things go once Microsoft starts pushing out those updates! Ha ha.
