Hi,
Can you provide the syntax for repairing Jaws from the command line? I tried the syntax provided on this ist, but all I heard was Jaws Professional. I did some troubleshooting with an FS rep last week and I was able to type in Jaws16 followed by another syntax and that worked, so I think Jaws16 is being seen. Thanks.

Whenever he calls in, we groan because honestly, the man cannot hear what you say to him. If you connect to him via tandem, the way you have to give him the code is he will say, "1, 2, 3" and you stop him at the right number/letter. H knows how many letters and numbers, but still. When I got him, he asked me if it was hard to repair JAWS. I told him it might be or might not, as that is subjective, but I did think it would be hard for me to try to explain to him how to do it. I knew I'd never get across to him how to do it with his hearing problems. He didn't understand and just kept asking if it is hard to repair JAWS. I finally told him it might or might not be depending on his computer abilities and I don't know if he understood, but he hung up. That is why whoever it was probably told him he needed a sighted person because if she couldn't stay connected, then trying to walk him through it would be impossible, and I am not exaggerating. Usually, if you try to explain something to him, he will eventually try to get one of his family members on the phone and have you explain it to them and then they will yell loudly to him and try to get him to understand. Usually they will tell him something bluntly like Addison you can't do it or Addison you have to upgrade JAWS or whatever and tell him they'll come over and help him later. He doesn't necessarily need a sighted person, but he does need someone who can hear. Doubt anyone who could come to help him would be blind and hearing so in that case a sighted person would be necessary. He is really hard to work with. If you can get connected via tandem, what Keith has done, and it was actually a good idea, is to open his notepad and type to him what he wanted to say and then have JAWS read it to him. He seems to be able to understand JAWS better. But he needs to be using relay, and if there are connection problems with tandem then it's hopless, literally. I might have tried to help him with tandem but he just kept asking is it hard to repair JAWS and I couldn't get anything at all across to him. -----Original Message----- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of O.Addison Gethers via Jfw Sent: Sunday, August 09, 2015 3:08 PM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' <jfw@lists.the-jdh.com> Cc: O.Addison Gethers <o.addisongethers@gmail.com> Subject: FW: repairing jaws -----Original Message----- From: O.Addison Gethers [mailto:O.AddisonGethers@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, August 08, 2015 8:13 PM To: The Jaws for Windows support mailing list Subject: FW: repairing jaws -----Original Message----- From: O.Addison Gethers [mailto:O.AddisonGethers@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, August 08, 2015 8:47 AM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' My view is that, if you know all the keyboard shortcuts, or if you have access to a document that shows all of them, the shortcuts are easier than trying to navigate the ribbon, whether or not it is the Virtual Ribbon. Yes, but some people may want to stay with the virtual ribbon, which is the FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually impaired users. To check your settings for the Virtual Ribbon Menu in JAWS:
Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter. Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to Open Miscellaneous.
Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that this setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.
To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the letter D as in dog.
Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and Down Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to work properly. If it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and press Enter to save these settings.

My view is that, if you know all the keyboard shortcuts, or if you have access to a document that shows all of them, the shortcuts are easier than trying to navigate the ribbon, whether or not it is the Virtual Ribbon. Yes, but some people may want to stay with the virtual ribbon, which is the FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually impaired users. Personally, I stayed with the regular ribbon, which is fine once you get used to it. All I'm saying is that people considering unchecking this option need to be aware of the consequences.

I hope this helps you. submitting tickets to Zendesk sites
I need to submit a ticket to a site that uses Zendesk. However, whether I use JFW with Chrome or Firefox, or even try to do it on my phone with iOS, I can't get past the drop down boxes to select the category. They don't identify as any link or combo box for me to use them, and turning virtual cursor off lands me on the wrong category most of the time. Apple and Uber are just two examples of sites that use this. How can I get my ticket submitted? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
I hope this helps you. Hi List friends,
Regarding the info on losing messages in outlook, and the suggestion to change the view menu, I need to know how to do this. The suggestion, alt-V, c, v, did not work for me. When I bring up the ribbons menu and enter on the "view" menu, nothing happens. It just says "blank". I also tried arrowing and tabbing and still says "blank".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: changing the "view" in outlook 2010
Agreed. But that is our preference. I worry that sometimes on this list, as well as at FS tech support, suggestions are made to change or remove this or that setting without alerting users to potential side-effects that we might overlook in the moment.

I'm having the same problem Barbara is having. I press Alt-V followed by C and V and hear nothing. Tabbing yields a blank area which Jaws speaks.

It sounds like they're gone; the entries are just listed in Add/Remove Programs? If you look in your Program Files (Or Program Files x86) folders, can you find the actual programs themselves, or are those just dead entries in the Programs & Features Control Panel? If they're just dead entries, they're annoying to look at but shouldn't hurt anything.

Possibly Off Topic: Strange Outlook 2010 problem
Hello, everyone. I have a strange Outlook 2010 problem on my work laptop that I could use some help with. It is a Windows 7 laptop with Jaws 16.0.4350. To give a bit of background, I have Outlook 2010 running with two e-mail accounts. One is my work e-mail account, and the other is my personal g-mail account for which I use the IMAP interface. Most of the time, when I write an e-mail in my g-mail IMAP account, two copies of my note end up in my sent file. I have always thought this to be a bit strange, but never worried about it too much since most of my e-mails are simple text messages that don't take up much space. Recently, I have noticed that sometimes, when I write an e-mail in my personal g-mail account, one copy of the message goes into my sent file, but the other copy winds up in the sent file for my work account. I know that the e-mails go out, but I'm just not sure why this is happening. Furthermore, I can't find a consistent explanation for, or patterning to this behavior. Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated. If this quiry is considered to be off topic for this list, feel free to respond to me at: tombehler@gmail.com Thank you! Re: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person?
Russell, yes you are right. I installed on a old computer and it didn't work well with any program, it took for ever to open outlook, or just to restart, jaws wasn't able to read the start menu, and some times crashed. Now I have on a ACER laptop windows 10 installed, and it is working perfectly. Now I am installing windows 10 on a dell desktop with an i7 processor, and I will see how it works, but I believe that the hardware too old, could be a problem on windows 10, like in whatever operating system or software.

While I did get accustomed to Windows 8.1, I wasn't crazy about it. I updated to Windows 10, and like the fact that the start menu is back. When I press the Windows key, I am placed in a search field, similar to Windows 7. If I down arrow, I am placed in a list of my 6 most used programs, which is really convenient. I am finding Cortana to work quite well... when she isn't able to answer my query, she opens up a search page in Bing... wish the search results could be switched to Google, but at least for now, Bing is the only choice. I am looking forward to trying Edge once Jaws support is available for it. I think whether or not to update to Windows 10 is a very personal choice, and, I also feel that we shouldn't be advised not to update just because we use Jaws. Having said that though, I don't think I would have updated if my laptop wasn't fairly new. I've been reading the various forums and many people are experiencing troubles with the Windows 10 update, not only users of assistive technology, so, as I say, the choice to update is a personal one. For me, I'm glad I updated, but we'll see how things go once Microsoft starts pushing out those updates! Ha ha. Hi, I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and I just have a question (with a lot of background first): So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program; you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to indicate that Cortana is iffy at best. So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where Windows 7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," apply here? I'd really honestly like to know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning computer to see if it will still function. I am not the one who tried to connect to his computer, but I did get him afterward.

Re: changing the "view" in outlook 2010
Yes, but some people may want to stay with the virtual ribbon, which is the FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually impaired users. Personally, I stayed with the regular ribbon, which is fine once you get used to it. All I'm saying is that people considering unchecking this option need to be aware of the consequences.

Clarification of my question, and thank yous
Hi all, Just to be clear, I wasn't saying that anyone shouldn't upgrade to Windows 10, or that I never would. I'm sure I will eventually--quite possibly next year if it works well enough. The intent of my question was that with all of the new features that are available but which we can't use yet, I wasn't clear what I would gain by going through that process today, right now, this week. I have a desktop that's not quite two years old, but I've got lots of horsepower in it; it won't have any trouble meeting the Windows 10 requirements. Then I have a cheap laptop which is not quite a year and a half old, and it's pretty basic, but should also function fine with Windows 10. Both are running Windows 7. Both are doing very well for me. Nothing's slow. Everything I need for home and work just works. It's really a blessing. So the goal of my inquiry was to understand what great improvements I should expect from upgrading to Windows 10 right now. To this point, I haven't heard anything that's made me want to drop what I'm working on to upgrade my perfectly functioning machines before I go to bed tonight. It does sound like Windows 8.1 users may be very grateful to get back the Windows 7 functionality that Microsoft should never have taken away in the first place, and I think if I had 8.1, I'd be thinking more seriously about diving into the Windows 10 pool. On a completely separate note, I thought an interesting item is the fact that for a limited time, people who upgrade to Windows 10 will get a DVD player for free to replace their current Windows Media Center; but later adopters will have to pay separately for Microsoft's DVD player de jour. This would be compelling if I hadn't abandoned Windows Media Player years ago for the free VLC Media Player. Thank you to all who have contributed to this discussion. It has been most helpful. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program. It seems to me that your jaws needs to be repaired. when I tried to do tandem while we were on the phone, jaws stopped speaking and then the tandem crashed, and I could not stay connected to your computer. it would be helpful if there was a sighted person on hand to help do the repair since I cannot stay connected to your computer through tandem. In order to repair jaws, we need to download jaws from the freedom scientific web site, and then run a repair. Is it hard for me to repaired jaws without sighter help and I'm hard of hearing ?
