Sighted Assistants & Web Pages

The following is only tangentially related to JAWS, but there is a connection.

At one time, not all that long ago, virtually anything presented on a web page visually was just precisely what it appeared to be, but not now.  More and more objects are being "visually masked" to appear as one thing when they are indeed another.  One example, which I just now encountered again when checking out the Adblock Plus main page, is their "Install for {insert the browser you're using at the moment here}" link, which is actually shown such that it looks for all the world just like a button to a sighted person.

I mention this only so you, and a sighted assistant, don't come close to coming to blows when they're telling you something like, "Hit B and you should land on that button since it's the only one on the screen," when the thing turns out to not really be a button.  I find myself, more and more frequently, falling into an "I'm getting ready to scream any moment now" mood because I'm unintentionally misdirecting my clients when we land on a page I'm not familiar with and "object X" is visually disguised to look just like "object Y."  I hate that, but I've already accepted the fact that it's likely to get far, far worse and may never get better.  I've been learning to love JAWS search much, much more due to this very issue.  Now that I better understand the logical split between the PC Cursor, JAWS Cursor, and Mouse Pointer within JAWS that will make my life, and those of my clients, somewhat easier as well.

Re: Adblock Plus, How / Where To Access Settings

Mario,

If you navigate to the Adblock Plus Main Web Page, http://adblockplus.org, from within the web browser you wish to install it for, it puts what looks like a button (but may be a link) right there on the page to install it.  In the case of Internet Explorer the text reads "Install for Internet Explorer" (I just tested that out).

It's clear that they're still using a workaround for IE and, particularly, for MS-Edge since Edge does not yet support Add-Ons via its own manager.

Mario, let me help you out.

If you're using Adblock Plus on Internet Explorer, the installer is a
good old-fashioned Execute file. It creates a folder in Program Files,
which is what Mike referred to earlier. In that sense, it is a program
of sorts. And the way you edit the settings for Internet explorer is
from an HTML document in that folder, which is the address Mike
referenced.

Brian is correct that in Firefox (and presumably in Chrome too) it's an
extension or add-on. So you are correct that it doesn't create a program
folder for you. However, Brian can see things we can't see, like
toolbars. So he's directing you to a toolbar which would be perfectly
correct if you could find it. I wish we could access it that way,
because hovering over that toolbar button shows you the number of ads
blocked on the current page, which I think would be kind of fun to see.
But it doesn't work that way for us. The good news, however, is that in
Firefox, on the Tools menu, at the very bottom--right below Options--is
an Adblock Plus submenu (as JAWS reads it), that will take you to the
options screen. You don't get to see how many ads have been blocked, but
you can easily manage your settings that way.

Hope that clears up any confusion.

The reason I posted about the buttons in the browser is

Re: JAWS command for "SaySysTray" ...

Aaron,

What's interesting in Windows 10, at least the part of the interface that follows the new format, is that the object you describe is neither a button nor a checkbox, but a relatively recent addition to the GUI pantheon known as a slider switch.  It behaves, as you note, exactly like a checkbox and has the states of "On" or "Off."

I don't know if either of the following ways of getting to the "Select which icons appear on the taskbar" settings would be faster and/or easier than the method you've already offered, but I thought I'd mention both of them.

  1. You can enter "select icons" as the search criteria in the Cortana/Windows Search box and the only thing returned from the search is the "Select which icons appear on the taskbar" icon.
  2. If you happen to be in Settings already, using "select icons" in the search box inside the Settings dialog also returns only the "Select which icons appear on the taskbar" icon.

At that point I'd imagine a single Tab would land you on that search result to activate it and tweak the setting for showing all icons to which you've already referred.

Re: JAWS command for "SaySysTray" ...

Hi Carolyn,

I have found that I have to make all of the notification tray icons visible in order for them to be seen by JAWS. By default Windows will collapse the notification tray and I believe JAWS may not be seeing the icons when they are collapsed. Here are the steps in Windows 10:

1. Press Windows+b
2. Use arrows to move to the date/time
3. Press Shift+F10 or press your application key and select Properties
4. Tab to and select the Customize button
5. Tab to and select "Select which icons appear on the task bar"
6. Press Tab then Ctrl+Home to move to the "Always show all icons in the notification area" button (this is read as "button" by JAWS but behaves as a checkbox)
7. Press Spacebar to check the box

As soon as you check the box you can press Insert+F11 to view your complete list of system tray icons. I have done this on all of my computers using JAWS. Hope this helps!

jaws+f11 gives a dialog with the tray items in a list, along with
buttons that allow a left single click, left double click or right single click. win+t actually puts focus in the tray area and you have to use regular jaws keys to do clicks.

And jaws 17 did not change what occurs for me in any appreciable way.

I looked at my key bindings and see that Say System Tray is not bound.

This is going to be a weird-sounding question, but here goes.

I am working with a Microsoft Word document that I created, and every time I start reading the document, and even at certain points within the document, Jaws speaks the word Catelyn.  I may be spelling the word incorrectly, but this is very annoying.

I can’t figure out if something in the document itself is triggering Jaws to say Catelyn, or if something has changed in my MS Word configurations to make this happen.

If anyone else has seen this issue, how did you correct it?

I’m using Jaws 16 with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 on this particular computer.

Ryan,

Are you positive you haven't forgotten your password? When I created my account here recently the system warned me that I should not use a password that it was essential remain hidden since the recovery process will send it in plain text. I know how "on auto pilot" I am as far as passwords go, and if you did this a while back you might have selected something other than one of "your regular" passwords.

In any case, if speed is of the essence then your best bet is probably going to be to go through the forgotten password process.

Re: Jaws speech and Zoomtext magnification?

It does work Ok.  I have worked with several folks who use that combo as well.  From time to time, we do encounter issues with the mirror display drivers, because both programs are fighting for control, as Ron referenced in his post.  Most of the time, they will play nice though.  The only major problems that I have encountered were with Zoomtext and Internet Explorer versions 9 and 10.  I think that has been resolved now though.

I am running Zoomtext 10.1 and JAWS 16 and I have not had any problems as of yet.  If you have the opportunity to do this, install JAWS first and uninstall it last.  There can always be an argument of which one keeps control of the vidio card.  You should not have any troubles with running Zoomtext without speech and having JAWS to speak for you.

Hi – I’m wondering if anyone is using Jaws speech with Zoomtext magnification. I did use this combo for years, but then abandoned Zoomtext in favor of Magic when it seemed almost impossible to get Zoomtext and Jaws to work together. This was at least 4-5 years ago that I made the switch. Now I’m having some problems with Magic and other products, like J-Say and Matlab (latter with Magic v. 13, so had to roll back to v. 12). Before I start a trial of Zoomtext, I would like to hear about any experiences out there with this combo. I always preferred the Zoomtext product for magnification.

Re: if i unsubscribe from the list will this delete my membership?

James Homuth

This isn't appropriately explained by the groups.io folks, and I'll be passing that on to them fairly shortly. If you haven't created an account when you subscribed to the group, for instance if you subscribe to the group by email, you don't actually have a password set on your account. So when you try to log into the website, it dumps you to the password reset screen because, as it should be, you're not able to log in to an account with no password. So at that point, it gives you the opportunity to let it generate one for you--that will, as it happens, at least get you into the system. Hopefully that clears things up slightly.

Rather than ask that question, just cut to the chase and let it send you a
password to use. Then you can change it back to the one you want. Important
point here is to get into the site to change your preferences -- worry about

Re: if i unsubscribe from the list will this delete my membership?

I can't seem to log in. I type my password and it doesn't seem to know
that I typed one in. It seems to think I forgot it. Please try logging
in yourself and see if it does the same thing. Internet explorer 11,
jaws 14, and windows 7.

I'd really like to get this resolved tonight.

Ryan,

            Try https://groups.io/login

I don't know where my last message to you ended up, but there
is a Subscription link after you've logged in and are on the groups page
that lets you choose No Email.

Re: Question about the Groups.io forum

Carolyn,

This isn't an e-mail issue, I'm talking about the actual presentation of these messages on the groups.io website.  While I get the digests several times a day I've never participated in the group via e-mail, but via the website.

Since this issue is utterly unconnected to JAWS or Freedom Scientific, I'll save my cage rattling with them for when it's needed, and it has been needed in the past!!
