That's right. You'll find it in Settings Center under Speech options. You'll hear "less speech options" and it will probably say "speech on demand." Typing the word "less" without the quotes in the search edit field will find this keystroke. Press the space key to set this to "speech mute." You should probably first press shift-ctrl-D after going into Settings Center if you want this keystroke to behave the same way in all applications. As an aside you can go into Keyboard Manager and add an alternative keystroke if you want. I did this and chose shift-alt-M as my Mute/Unmute toggle. Again, make sure you're in the list of default keystrokes if you want this shortcut key to be available in all applications.

I got Wordweb. It’s ok for my phone but I would like entries/definitions with a bit more detail. The JAWS researchit function connects to wiktionary and it’s actually much better. I think Oxford has an app of some kind; not sure of screen-reader-friendliness though.

Yes, I think the banners stay on your screen for a bit of time before they go away and disappear. For me, I want to hear them but not interfere with what I'm doing so I would rather review them in the action center at my convenience.

Re: I just got a Bluetooth speaker that works great with Windows 10 and JAWS 2020
Kevin Minor
Hi Alison.
I’m using Windows 10, so my instructions are for that.
First, hit the WINDOWS key. This should put you in the search area where you can type something.
Now start typing BLUETOOTH. You’ll get something like Bluetooth and other devices. Hit ENTER on that.
You’ll be where an option is add Bluetooth device. That’s what you want. You might also have to turn Bluetooth on. In this area, TAB is your friend.
I think once you select ADD Bluetooth device, you may have to select Bluetooth again.
Now put your Bluetooth headphones in pairing mode. TAB around this screen for a list of Bluetooth devices. Look for your headphones, and hit ENTER on them. If all goes well, they’ll be connected. Be warned, however. Once paired, all your sounds will go through the phones, and unless you specifically set JAWS for another sound card, your speech will also go through the headphones, and you might think you lost speech.
Hope this helps. Kevin and Jilly the flying doggie

It sounds like a good speaker. Wonder if you can help as you are obviously used to pairing. I belong to a Rock Chir which is currently having to meet via Zoom. So everyone doesn’t hear Jaws nattering on, I am using headphones, but doing so is quite restrictive as some of the songs have moves. Blue tooth headphones would obviously be the answer and I do have some which I use with my iPhone. I’ve no idea how to pair them with a desktop computer however. Any clues on how to go about this please? Alison.

Hi all.
I’ve finally found a Bluetooth speaker that doesn’t suffer from the dreaded cutting off the start of speech with JAWS. It’s the Tribit Soundmax Plus Bluetooth speaker. I might have that backwards, but if you look for it on Amazon, you’ll find it. It has 24 watts of sound, is stereo, and uses a micro USB cable for charging. The buttons have tactile markings, so it’s easy to figure out. It claims to have 20 hours of battery life, and the advertising says it has a range of up to 100 feet. I just got it, so I can’t say much about how well it works yet. The thing that I’m very happy about is it doesn’t chop off the beginning of JAWS when it starts. I think it’s mainly made for devices like smart phones, but it paired with my Windows 10 laptop with no problem. Oh yeah, it’s waterproof, so some rain won’t hurt it.
I ordered it from Amazon, and with Prime it costs around $60, taxes included.
That’s all from me. Right now it’s charging, but I used it plugged in with no problem, but I don’t know what that would mean for the battery. Tonight I’m going to start music on this laptop, and instead of moving the computer to my bedroom, the new speaker will be used, and it will be really nice to have a lower volume than what the lower quality internal speakers produce. I know, I could just lower their volume in sound settings, but what can I say, I’m lazy.
Just letting you know.
Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard. Kevin and Jilly the flying doggie

Hi, There is also a way to change the setting so that instead of doing speech on demand when you press insert plus , then S. You have to go into the jaws settings and find speech options, and there is a setting there to be able to mute the speech for all apps when insert plus space is pressed.

Hi again, Stephanie. One thing you might consider is this, you can customize Windows so that it doesn't load some programs that you know you won't use when Windows starts. You can change this behavior in the following way,
1. Go to Settings by using Windows key plus I. 2. Right Arrow to Apps & features, and press ENTER. 3. TAB once, then Arrow down to Startup, and press ENTER. 4. Here you can choose which programs load when Windows starts. Some programs such as some of the games, I tell Windows to not load when Windows starts.
You can also choose which apps to allow to run in the background.
1. Go to Settings with Windows key plus I. 2. TAB once, Arrow down to Privacy and press ENTER. 3. Arrow down to Background Apps and press ENTER. 4. Choose which apps you want to allow to run in the background.
Some of the apps I have chosen to not allow to run in the background are,
3D Builder ‑ 3D Viewer ‑ Candy Crush Soda Saga ‑ Groove Music ‑ Microsoft Solitaire Collection ‑ Minecraft ‑ Paradise Bay ‑
Depending upon your personal interests, you may choose to allow some of these programs to run in the background, and you might wish to disable others. These are only my personal preferences.

Hello all,
I recently purchased my first windows pc for over ten years and have jaws 2020. I also have a Focus braille display.
First of all, is there a way of navigating the screen using the focus display? Switching between display and keyboard is quite annoying, or perhaps I just need to get used to it. Also, how do I mute the speech and then unmute it again when necessary.
Lastly, is there a document, or book [in brf or word] with help on how to use jaws? I don't do well with audio and prefer a written reference if possible.
Thank you so much for your help.

Re: Notification hell!
One can also greatly reduce the incidence of notifications, period, by disallowing them for any apps where you don't consider getting them in a really timely manner to be important.
Settings, System, Notifications & Actions Pane. Navigate down to the list under Get Notifications from these senders and toggle off every single one of them where you do not need or want a notification "in real time". Almost everything defaults to ON initially, so if you've never visited this list in the past you'll likely be toggling a very great many things OFF. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Hi, I suspect that you have banners checked for your notification which you have to uncheck within settings. I don't remember if I had to do this for each application or if this has changed in the newer version of windows but if you go to the notification settings and hit enter on one of the apps that you have turned on, you should get a new screen with a few checkboxes. Using JAWS 2021 beta 3 and the latest 20H Windows 10 build, I'm trapped in notification hell. I don't mind hearing notifications arrive while I'm working on other things. But these notifications are taking over my window focus such that my only recourse is to alt+tab away from, then back to, the application where I'm working. When the notifications appear, they can't be dismissed or deleted. Only moving them to the action center seems to get rid of them. I don't have focus assist turned on because I worry I won't hear notifications, which I still want. I just don't want them hogging my entire focus and hemming me in. By the way, this happens with Narrator and NVDA as well. It has also persisted through numerous clean Windows reinstallations and the past few insider previews. The notifications appear and cannot be dismissed or deleted. They only disappear by alt+tabbing. The action center doesn't seem to be the culprit. When I open it, I can tab to the notification list, delete or dismiss individual notifications or groups of notifications from specific applications. The only thing I cannot do consistently from within the action center is activate notifications. Space or enter only work sometimes; it might be one or the other, but more often, neither. Since I know how to choose my battles, I'm willing to defer solving my notification activation problem if I could just get get these notifications to be voiced in the background without stealing focus.
