Patrick,

I was just on the TeraByte web site ordering the image backup software. When I got to the page to fill in name, address, etc, It says the field name, first name, and it didn’t say invalid or required. I copied the code and pasted it below.

class="dr_label "><span class="dr_required_field">*&nbsp;</span>First Name:</label><div class="input-group"><input class="form-control" type="text" id="bill_address_first_name" name="bill_address_first_name" value="" size="40" maxlength="100" style="border-right:0"/><span id="js_status_addon_bill_address_first_name" class="input-group-addon dr_status_addon"><span id="js_bill_address_first_name_status_valid" class="hide">&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="glyphicon glyphicon-ok text-success"></span>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span><span id="js_bill_address_first_name_status_invalid" class="hide">&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="glyphicon glyphicon-remove text-danger"></span>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span><span id="js_bill_address_first_name_status_none">&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="glyphicon glyphicon-none"></span>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></span></div><div class="dr_field_error"><span id="js_error_bill_address_first_name" class="hide">The first name entered is not valid.</span></div></div><div class="col-md-6 column form-group"><label

Hi Kevin,

You can go to https://kinsellahomeimprovements.ie

From here select the https://kinsellahomeimprovements.ie/ContactUs.php link.

Now you will be presented with a form.

It will ask for name, email, phone, query and a random number.

You can find the random number displayed on the label just above the input field.

Enter this, and click the “ask us” button if you want to submit the form.

However, there is no need to submit it to see what I am talking about.

When the form is presented, if you press “e” it will take you to the first edit box.

Here you will hear “enter full name invalid entry”.

Jaws is reporting that the entry in the field is invalid, and quite rightly so, as it is currently empty.

The large text area box for the query does not even report its own label.

The random number box does not report its label either, but this is because it is being generated when the page is loaded.

That problem is for another day!!

However, this can be unhelpful for the user.

I have tried having a default in the name/email/phone number fields, but this would allow the user to submit rubbish as it is then not required because it already has a value.

I have done some research, and it suggests, that this has been happening since jaws 2013.

It is not just jaws, people have reported the same thing using nvda and window eyes.

However, it also suggests, that chrome based browsers have something to do with it.

It does not seem to be as prevalent in browsers such as firefox or internet explorer.

I am not speaking for myself here, this is just what I can find out on the internet.

It seems to be the “required” attribute on html5 that is causing it.

The aria-required attribute does not fix it either.

Perhaps, I am too close to this, as I am developing it.

“can’t see the wood for the trees”!!!.

Anyway, if you see something, please let me know, even if it is not relevant here.

I may have overlooked further accessibility features.

Don’t worry if something breaks, I am still developing it.

Cheers,

pat

Hi,

This is to do with jaws 2018/2020.

The field i have to input on the web site is a “required” field.

When focus is on it, the message that jaws reports is “required invalid entry”.

This happens the first time you set focus to it, because there is nothing in it.

Once you input something, it works fine in that it does not tell you that it is required, or invalid entry because there is something in it.

If you take the text out of it, it defaults back to “required invalid entry”.

There is no problem with this if someone without a screen reader is using the site, but from an accessibility point of view, its not good.

I am developing this site myself. So far, i have found no accessible route around this, despite looking up the various accessibility guide lines (wcag2) etc.

Am i missing something?

Is anyone a programmer out there that has found an accessible work around for this?

Just for your information, the web site is written using html and php. On this particular page, there is no java script.

The fields are always blank when the page is presented to the user.

So, when you invoke the, Insert + spacebar, then press the letter, O , then pressing the letter, A , your HP scanner isn't in the scanner and camera list?  What does show in the list of options?  Have you tried using left & right arrow keys as well as the up and down arrow keys?

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Mike,  Thanks for this.  I was not aware that this was possible.  When I tried to acquire a document, I got a message saying that there were no scanners or cameras available.  I have a HP Photo Smart all in 1 printer/scanner connected.  How do I get JAWS to recognize it?
Thanks.

Hi Pastor Gil,

Here's another option to use for scanning files.  I more often than not get better scans scanning this way.

How to scan files using a scanning device with the Jaws OCR feature.  Steps are below.  This will only work with JAWS2018 and newer.

1. Place whatever you want scanned with the OCR feature on your scanner.

2. Press the JAWS Key + Spacebar, then, O, for OCR, and press, A , for acquire.

3. Choose the scanner from the, Scanner & Camera combobox pop-up, tab to the, Acquire button, press the spacebar, and the scanner will scan the file using
the Jaws OCR feature.  It will then read it to you.  This is GREAT!
Note:  The shortcut keystroke to acquire is, Alt + Q.

To save the file you can export it to Excel or, after scanning select all the text with, Control + A, press, Control + C, to copy to the clipboard, then
paste the text, Control + V, into a text or Word
file and save.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Hi Pastor Gil,

There are not many items which are required, but there can be preferences.  I like the page orientation announced on each scan.  It is unchecked by default.  It can be checked in the settings menu, Workflow menu in the modify workflow field.  You have probably already set things like voices and speech rate.  You may want to be sure that the work flow you want is set in the Acquire menu.  I have scan and read checked, but I have used image only when I am sharing a document with a sighted person.  It will appear better for them with the default formatting they are used to viewing.  Smile.

Other than those things, I do not think I modify much.  Back to personal preference.

Hi Pastor Gil,

I forgot to mention one thing.  Any changes that you want to make permanent no matter where in the menus, you need to save the settings in the settings menu.  That may seem self evident, but the only place to save changes for all menus is in the settings menu unlike many programs which have a save feature in each ribbon, area, etc.

Smile.

Hello.  I am looking for a full-size wireless keyboard as well.  I want to use it to pair with my Iphone 11.  Yes, I know that there are other alternatives.  I want a full-size keyboard which has keys like my wireless keyboard which uses my wireless card in my laptop.  I like full-size keys; not laptop keys.  I gave up searching for a full-size keyboard after I ordered an Apple Magic keyboard but was disappointed and returned it because the keys were a laptop type keyboard.  Thanks.

Several on this list use the Logitech G613 Lightspeed Wireless Mechanical Gaming Keyboard.

It weighs a couple of pounds but has everything you are asking for.  It also has 6 programable keys down the left.  They come programmed as f1 – f6 and require sight to change them.

Standard numpad, 6-pack and arrow keys with space between the groups

The two AA alkaline batteries are still strong after more than a year.  My hands are starting to have problems and I find I can type faster and more accurately on this keyboard than on a standard membrain keyboard.

My old logitechI believe was a K320. I checked out the K780 but am looking for standard layout for the six pack and arrow keys. The K800 seems to fit most criteria as far as I can tell except it is rechargeable and does not accept replaceable alkaline batteries. Frequent charging is not ideal especially when alkaline batteries often last 2 years or more. Amazingly, it does not appear that Logitech makes a truly standard full-size keyboard with num pad that accepts batteries. Was hoping someone knew of another brand/model that they liked.

Morning all. Looking for a Jaws friendly SpreadSheet Program to download. I tried Open Office but cannot even figure out how to get it to load. Tried Google Sheets and Jaws will not work in it either. Any other suggestions?

Currently using a version of Office 2007, but Excel keeps shutting it off in the middle of work saying it is not being offered anymore and it wants me to try "X number of days" trial.

So any other help appreciated. I cannot afford new Office Version.  I have JART on this tcomputer but how the heck does a person even get past the first page???

Thanks
