Nook App for Barnes & Noble
Elise Berkley
Hello, everyone.
I am trying to get to the download for the Nook app to be able to read Nook books from Barnes & Noble. For the life of me, I cannot find the download for this app. It says it is free everywhere I look, but I cannot figure this out. Can anyone help me with this? I have JAWS 18 with Windows 10. Thank you very much. Elise Berkley

Re: reading pdf documents with jaws.
Zel Iscel
That’s interesting because in excel, I don’t get Jaws to read me everything in the cell if the row height or width is too small for the text. I press alt and H, then Jaws o then i to increase the row height and Alt h then o then w to increase the width. After that all the text in the cell is read out.
In PDF and Word docs, Jaws reads whatever is in the cell regardless of whether the text fits or not.
Cheers Zel

My guess is that, while JAWS can read the cell contents to you, the cell width is actually not wide enough to show all the text you typed visually. I’ve had this before when printing handouts for people. Unfortunately, I cannot find a verbosity setting in JAWS to turn on a notification. I used to have a setting turned on that would say “Clipped” when the text was cut off, but I wonder if that was back when I used Window Eyes, because I’m not finding a setting to toggle for that.

Hi,
I am using excel and ms word. When i save files as pdf, jaws reads out text even if it cannot be seen. I had my son look at a particular document, and this is basically what he told me.
I had 8 cells of excel merged. In this i had “if you have any questions in relation to this, please contact the company using the details above”. When i look at it in excel, jaws reads out the entire thing. When i save it as a pdf, jaws reads out the entire thing. However, when my son looks at the pdf, he only sees the text as far as the word “using”. Everything after this is truncated. With regard to word, if i create a table, and things are not properly presented in the columns, jaws just reads it as if everything is ok. For example, if there is too much text in a column of a table, to the eye, it looks like it is “pushed” up. At least, thats the way my son explained it to me. However, as i said, jaws reads it just fine in word and as a pdf. I suppose, basically what i am trying to get at here, is: Does anyone know of a way, to have jaws just read out what someone with sight would actually see? To have jaws speaking text that is hidden from the eye, is causing problems.

I did not like the PDF engine that comes with Edge, there for in Edge settings I have disabled PDF processing. now PDF is automatically downloaded and I have manually open it with AKrobat DC reader. So far I was not able that it is opened in Akrobat without download. Klaus

Send to sub menu is there, but Desktop create shortcut is not in that

JAWS Marty,
You need to open the, SendTo, submenu to find the create
desktop shortcut option. After you open the context menu press the letter,
N , to open the , SendTo submenu, or down arrow to, submenu SendTo, and press
enter.
Another way is, after opening the context menu, up arrow to,

Hi,
I have several nas devices on my network with different web interfaces. The buffalo link station is particularly inaccessible. There are various button controls on it, depending on what you are doing. With jaws, there seems to be no way to activate them. I have tried: Using the “enter” key. Pressing “spacebar”. Routing pc to jaws and left-clicking. Same thing but right-clicking. Does anyone have any ideas as to how these controls might be accessed? Buffalo say that they are addressing this, but i wont hold my breath. I have tried it with jaws 2018 and 2020 (latest update). Most likely, whoever developed the interface didn’t label anything. It also doesn’t seem to matter what browser is being used. I have tried: Internet explorer, edge (latest version), google chrome (latest version) and brave.

Re: Question for those using One Drive at home

I think I paid including taxes $159 for 3 Tbs of storage with drop box. Using Marie’s logic, $120 for 1 Tb per user and you can have 5 different users is still the best bang for your buck. Strictly mathematically it is $120 for 5 Tbs of storage.

Marie,
You are actually getting 2TB of space for about $120 per year with Dropbox. Not that this overrides your argument but it's best to quote the correct facts.

If you think about it, One year of DropBox with 1TB is around $120. You can get a one year subscription to Office 365 which you can share with family members. Each member can install on five systems and each one gets their own 1TB of One Drive space. In addition, as long as you are subscribed you get all updates to all the Office programs. It's not rocket science! On 7/17/2020 11:22 AM, David Diamond wrote:

OK, I have just deleted my JAWS 2020 short cut from my desk
top. I then went to Start All Programs JFW 2020 JAWS and hit the Context
menu. I did not find a Create Desktop shortcut option, so I went to
Properties Shortcut Tab and entered J for the shortcut key. I then tabbed
to Apply then hit OK. Then I exited JAWS 2020 and pressed Control+Alt+J
and it worked after a few seconds. Now, I do not have a desktop shortcut
for JAWS 2020 and none of my other desktop shortcuts work, but the hot key combo
works to restart JAWS.

David, I just removed Malware Bites a few days ago, and still no joy. It all stopped working when I put the free JAWS 2020 on my computer. I have made sure that the previous versions of JAWS do not have a short cut key set.

However, as I encountered similar issues a while ago I'll just throw this out there. Is the consumer having this problem using the commercial Malware Bytes program? I encountered similar issues which, in my case, was caused by or at least had something to do with running the commercial version of Malware Bytes along with Kaspersky Antivirus. I did not wish to remove Kaspersky but removing Malware bytes solved the problem. its easier to use the Windows 1, etc. or to tap windows and type a couple letters when you have programs that start with the same letter.

Hi Adrain,
Why not go with, J2020, just to cut down on what you have to
listen to? And with subsequent version shortcuts you or someone else has
on their desktop, J19, J2018....

Subject: Re: Control Alt J Not Working to Open JAWS I used to have the problem of the disappearing control-alt-j shortcut until an FS tech support guy told me to rename the icon. Ever since, I've added the word "shortcut" in the icons for every version of JAWS on my desktop. I'm trying to remember if I created the control-alt-j shortcut before or after renaming the icon. I'm guessing I do that first. Doublecheck in properties that it is still assigned. 1. Go to the desktop. 2. Locate the JAWS icon, do not press enter. 3. Press alt+enter. This should give you properties. 4. Tab to shortcut, and be sure it is set to ctrl+alt+j. 5. Tab to okay. sometimes you get an error message saying that only an administrator can make this change. Okay the message, then you can okay the change. 6. While still on the JAWS icon, press alt+enter again and check to be sure it worked. Good luck! If you have a desktop icon for your JAWS or any ap, just hit Windows D and
hit the first letter of the ap that you wish to open.

JAWS Everyone experiencing this, please contact Freedom Scientific.
Changing the icon name does nothing for me, no desktop shortcuts work. This is not true for everyone, but for those of us for whom it is true, it is a pain in the butt!
I now either use the Windows 1 through 0 keys for programs pinned to the task bar, or I tap the Windows Key and type enough of the name to get a match and hit enter.

I too have had no joy with desktop shortcuts ever since installing JAWS 2020. It is not only the JAWS hot key that doesn’t work, but all of my short cuts that quit working.

From a fellow sufferer of this bug, I’m guessing she is running Jaws 2020 on Windows 10, or 2019 on Windows 10. I reported this bug last year to FS and discovered that only a few people had this issue. Eric Damery did a tandem session with me and he could observe it on my machine, this was still with Jaws 2019. They thought they had solved it in 2020, which did work fine for about 4 days. Then, I lost the ability to use the shortcuts I had created. So, I switched to using the pin to task bar, I think it is called, where Windows Key plus 1 launches the first program in the order pinned, etc.
I am the only user of this machine, I have admin rights up the ying yang, yet, they do not seem to know what causes this. This is a Del Inspiron 57 something or other, laptop.

Hi all,
I am working with a student who, when she hits Control Alt J to open JAWS, nothing happens. Same thing with hitting Control Alt N to open NVDA. I know that it is set correctly in JAWS shortcut Properties and she has admin privileges, so that is not the problem. Any idea what the problem might be? Does it have anything to do with updating drivers or something like that? If so, what do you do?
Any assistance is appreciated.
Thanks, David
