Hi Stan,
Call up task manager with shift control + escape and control tab to the startup tab and uncheck it.
Assuming you are using windows 10.
In 7, you need to run a utility called msconfig with the run edit box which you get with windows + R.

Dear List: I am running J 2021 and Google Chrome is my default browser.

Edge and a site called personal Microsoft comes up frequently at start up. Seems to slow up start up quite a bit.

How do I get rid of this intrusion?

Hi,I figured it out. I just had to let it do its thing.  I also tried to enable windows backup, but apparently its not very accessible with jaws or narrator.  They both told me "setting up" then had a button that was greyed out.   Is anyone on here, familiar with that feature?

Hi, Michelle and Jessica. I believe there is also a setting in JAWS that will determine how often a website will refresh. To find this,

1. Open the browser.

2. Press JAWS key plus V to enter Quick Settings.

3. In the search box that opens, enter the word refresh, and press ENTER on the result.

I believe the default is automatic, and I believe you can set the page not to refresh at all.

Hi again Jessica, thanks for your reply. I  really don’t need any assistance on open book or the pearl scanner. I have used them successfully for years. I was simply wanting to get feedback, good or bad, as the El Braille is still the new kid on the braille note taker block. It’s encouraging to hear good things about it from an actual user, and not just a sales rep. As for the system’s designs, components and abilities, I’ve been following the El Braille since its pre-Generation 5 version when it was a single unit 4th gen. system that had to have the processor and display  permanently housed together in a unit that didn’t allow the two to be separated. Its modular nature, real-world 40-cell display and word processor (like a lap top) are what I’ve wanted in a note taker ever since I was introduced to theBraille Lite back in 1996. Once again, thanks for your input.

I know this is the JAWS group, but this is a workaround for this issue:  Use NVDA during gaming.

I have not played with the JAWS screen curtain feature in several years, but if it turns back off upon right click and that can't be changed you're stuck.  Under NVDA the screen curtain can be made persistent, and there's even a warning when you do this that you need to remember how to turn it off again to get it out of persistent screen curtain while using NVDA.  Of course, if you exit NVDA to go back to JAWS, I believe the screen curtain function controlled by NVDA is turned off.

The Apex has always had Eloquence as another TTS option. I had one when I was working several years ago. I do not remember exactly where that setting is since I have not used a humanware braille device for several years.

Hi Bill,

Thanks so much for your question.

Yes, I had an Apex previously and liked it, but my elBraille paired with my focus, is so much better.

The Apex uses Keynote Gold as its TTS engine, and cannot be changed, at least that I know of.

With Jaws and your elBraille, you can use eloquence, which is what I’m using at the moment, or you can also use Vocalizer, along with the voices that come with Windows 10.

Notes:

The elBraille 40 5th generation is a screenless Windows 10 computer.

There is an HDMI port, which will allow you to connect to a monitor if ncec.

The elBraille requires both a focus braille display and Jaws.

Unless you absolutely have to use the professional version of JAWS, I highly recommend jumping on the “home annual license” bandwagon, as it makes Jaws way more affordable.

As for using a pearl camera and openBook, I sincerely apologize, but I can’t help you there, because I’ve never used those programs.

Perhaps, you could ask here, or call Vispero, and get your questions answered that way.

If you can, I highly recommend speaking to either Ron Miller or Jeff McCullough.

They’ve both helped me, and are extremely knowledgible.

Thanks, and I hope that helps,

Jessica

Hi Jessica, I am afraid I can’t help you with that. However, I do have a Sidenote question for you about your El Braille experience. I have asked the VA to get me a 40 cell El Braille  and train me on it. I am working on becoming a literary braille transcriber and I felt it would serve that need better than my Apex. so, do you have experience with the Apex? if so, how does it seem to compare to the El Braille? I intend to use it in concert with the open book software and pearl scanner. The problem I ran into when converting Open Book  docs to word docs is figuring out what parts of text have specialized font face formats. things like italics, bold face and underlined text. I figure the braille display could help me identify such things more easily than JAWS. BTW, good luck with your issue.

Hi All,

I have a Lenovo p53 mobile workstation laptop.  I want to use my computer with out the screen on how can I do this? Jaws’ screen Curtin is great, but when I play games, like Swamp, and have to use the mouse’s right click the curtain turns off. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Juan

Hi, if anyone wants to stop getting the update messages then if you tab around the box asking you to update there is a check box you can check to ask not to be notified of any updates. I did this myself when I thought I was only going to be using this computer for a couple more weeks then it was to go to my sighted mum. However due to an outlook issue I have been using this machine allot longer then I thought. I probably should go in and do the check for updates and update this Jaws 2020. I have a SMA which gives me access to 2021 but again since I thought I would only be using this laptop for a short time I didn’t see the point of updating Jaws.

Bye for now.
