That works in File Explorer and Outlook, but not in Dropbox.  I’ve read that it’s much like killing a vampire.  You have to do a full ritual before Dropbox will let them go, and it’s bloody hard using JAWS.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I can’t afford to send Dropbox my hard-earned money, which is what they want us to do.

Howdy All,

Replied to the wrong thread the first time.  Okay I just called my friend and had him do the steps below.  These steps will definitely work.

1. To get to the Trust Center, open Word and press, Alt + T, then press the letter, O, now down arrow to, Trust Center.

2. Tab to, Trusst Center settings... button and press the spacebar to open.

3. Down arrow to, Protected view, now tab through these options unchecking each 1 if they're checked or the ones you feel comfortable in unchecking.  Personally I unchecked all of them, and when you get to, Okay, press enter to close / save and Alt + F4 to close Word.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Hi All,

A friend is wanting to know how he can stop the following.

From: Vince

Have you ever seen the following two messages when arrowing through e-mails?

1.

"To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic downloads of some pictures in this message."

2.

"If there are problems with how this message is displayed, click here to view it in a web browser.  Click here to download pictures."

I’m running JAWS Version 2021.2012.48, running Windows

Version 10.0.19041 Build 19041 and Outlook version 15—according to the Outlook property.

These messages seem to pop up every other message when I arrow up.  It is really annoying!

If you’ve seen them, is there a way to stop them from popping up?

All help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.

Hi,

My friends are writing a story on Google Docs and they divide it by chapters. I left off on a certain chapter and don’t always have the document open. Is Control F the only way?

I turn on every possible Jaws indicator  for Word, the Word processor that I use. I have capitals noted by pitch change in letters, words, and Say All. I have indentations, styles, font, font characteristics, and Grammar and Spell check on as well. I would go through all the Word settings and set them so that Jaws tells you everything possible about the format.

After you note down all the requirements of the journal to which you are sending the article, create headings/styles to match the required type, font, and font face of headings. I don’t recall whether Word has a checker for MLA or APA or whatever other style your journal wants, but if so, try using it. I did my dissertation on an Apple 2C with Prowords  and made the heading levels and styles using Prowords commands. I did my statistics tables this way. It was very tedious but doable.

Hope some of this is helpful. Please let us know what you learn about best Jaws settings as this will probably help lots of us.

Does anyone have advice on features of Word and JAWS that are helpful with academic writing, such as submitting an article to a journal? I would think Word's style features would help. And I've heard JAWS text analyzer is helpful for proofreading. Thoughts on this? Or perhaps other features to try?

Hello,

Listing grammatical  errors, Jaws key plus shift plus g.

Listing misspelled words, alt plus shift plus l

These are desktop commands, but they probably work in a laptop layout.

And definitely, since academic papers require citations and references, the speech and sounds scheme feature is very helpful.

If you’re not acquainted  with such a feature, you can google it, and you will find the Freedom Scientific section that explains how this feature works.

As for unity and coherence, there is not such an advanced technological tool that can help you with that other than revising and editing over and over.

Best,

I understand what is happening, but don't have solutions yet. The
issue is that Google Docs is doing echoing with "live" regions, and
JAWS is also doing echoing of characters.
You could always adjust echo and if you create a special Google Docs
profile that could be added to the Settings center for that profile.
There also might be a setting in Google Docs to adjust typing echo.

Yes, I second all this.
You have to find a speed that works for you. If Jaws is ahead of you and you get stuck somewhere, you can quickly navigate to the particular spot that's giving you trouble and keep going.
It does take practise though.

It takes some practice. I’ve been doing this for a number of years, I am a pastor, and use voiceover for my notes on Sunday. The concept would be the same with jaws however. Couple of things, be familiar with the content as much as you can before you start and if you can format the document in such a way that jazz only reads a small portion of any one time. Just before you are ready to start your next section advanced jazz and allow what you hear to be slightly ahead of what you’re speaking. You can do it be patient with yourself as it takes as I said quite a bit of practice.

Hello,

I have the following questions:

First, I normally listen to JAWS at 65%. Even after slowing it down,
if I try to listen to the text line-by-line, I find that by the time I
am done reading and have to speak, I am only able to retain 40-50% of
what I have heard. So I end up losing some content.
On the other hand, if I listen to JAWS one word at a time, I find that
I end up being much too slow, such that my speech sounds disjointed
and halting.

Second, I am wondering how your experience differs between verbally
reproducing new content [i.e. material you have never read before]
versus content you are already familiar with.
Put simply, would it pay to familiarize oneself with the content to be
reproduced beforehand?

Third and lastly, can you suggest some pointers for building up one's
capacity, to be able to get better at doing this i.e. listening to
JAWS and speaking out what it is reading at the same time?

Hi Bill. Thanks but I did have a sighted person who looked and found nothing that JAWS can read. Pat (on this list) gave me a great suggestion about downloading the drivers directly instead of using the HP Smart which does it all for you. This way, some of the older drivers also load in—and Open Book is a bit older. Since I’m using Open Book, that will fix the scan problem. I can always get it to print with control P.

I have to wait until my son can come back and do it for me, since I’m tech illiterate. It will be very soon, I hope.
