Re: when hopefully JAWS2021 official release will be available
Joyce Feinberg
In an interview Wednesday evening, Eric Damery said that jaws 2021 along with fusion and Zoom text 2021 will be released around mid November. There will be a public beta in the next couple of days but if you changes will occur from feedback of that public beta
at the release. There will be additional updates in mid December and another one at the end of January. Updates will continue through 2021 around every six weeks. With each of these updates, there may be additional features at it Along with bug fixes.

You need to use bookmarks in Word. Placemarkers only work on the internet.

I’ve encountered this phenomenon in the same repeated, very specific situation. I open a protected file and unprotect it. then I start reading and decide to set a placemarker at a certain point. I get that verbalization you quote. The solution for me is to alt-tab to another window, typically Outlook, and alt-tab back into the document. Then all is well.

Hello,
I am conducting a research paper thus reading extended literature. When I hit control+windows+k to mark a spot within the document I get “setting place marker in beginning of document is not valid”. But I am on page 72 therefore I am nowhere near the beginning of the document. I even placed the cursor at the beginning of the sentence to mark.

Hmmm, just this file or everywhere. I have a file with a couple hundred pages in it, and I just tried the experiment. I'm also running word from office 365 and the place mark and return both worked fine.

Re: alt home equivalent in Chrome?
Robin,
You'll be doing "the latter." Most web browsers these days don't set up home pages except if the user explicitly wants one, and particularly Chromium-based browsers, where reliance on the "On Startup" settings most often take precedence anyway. Open Chrome settings and search on "Home." The Show Home Button setting will be in the search results, toggled off. If you toggle it on, you will then be presented with two options: New Tab Page (which is what it sounds like you're defaulting to when no Home Page has ever been set at all) and the second radio button is followed by an edit box where you enter the home page you prefer, so you'll select that and enter that. One note, you do not have to keep the Show Home Button option enabled after you do this, as you will have set a default home page whether or not you choose to have the home button displayed in the collection of browser controls. After having set a default home page ALT+HOME behaves precisely as you describe it having behaved for you in IE. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

alt home equivalent in Chrome?
Van Lant, Robin
In Internet Explorere, I found the Alt Home shortcut to return to my default homepage very useful. That shortcut doesn’t’ work in Chrome, but rather seems to pull up some version of a Google page. Is there an equivalent shortcut in Chrome or a way I can change the action Google is currently doing? I just looked on Google list of shortcuts and saw nothing for what I’m trying to do. I want to be able to quickly return to my company intranet page without having to go to bookmarks.

I am using Jaws 18 with Windows 10. This question may be a bit strange, but here it goes: after my legal assistant sets my folders in drop box (where I store my legal materials) to have the files appear by dates, rather than by name, it appears that as soon as I open the folder and click a file, the files again appear by name instead of dates. Is there possibly a setting that is causing this unusual behavior? Thanks.

In Canada we cannot get the monthly SMA as a subscription. We have to pay the $165 for the home version up front. Yes, it is $165, I just renewed my SMA. Still cheap. As one of my dog clients said, “It really depends on one’s priorities.” The comment had nothing to do with the SMA, it was pertaining to having the dogs ready when I came to pick them up, leash, knowing where the dog is etc. You’d be surprised, some don’t know where the leash is and if they forget I’m coming, they could spend time just looking for the leash.

In my opinion it's always sworthwhile to keep up-to-date with Jaws unless of course you are using NVDA. The fact is that eventually you have to get caught up because Windows 10 changes so quickly and even with Office features change and are added all the time especially if you use Office 365 and there is simply no good reason to not always run the latest version. Jaws is not quite as it used to be where a new version meant possibly major new features, nowadays sometimes these features are added half way through the year and in any case, if you don't upgrade on a regular bases or, if you live in the US, use Jaws via the subscription based model, you eventually have to pay hundreds of Dollars to get caught up, you might as well pay the $7 or $8 a month or whatever the subscription costs or if you use th eolder 2-year license model by the new SMA right after you use your last one. For the Home version I believe it's $120 every 2 years which is $5 a months, quite a few people spend this on coffee every day, if you divide it by the number of days it's like 16.66 Cents a day and having the use of Jaws is certainly worth a couple of quarters every 3 days to me. .

Re: Accessible fax services with JAWS and Windows10
I have been using Myfax.com for many years, but this is not a free service. I just switched to an internet based phone system at my retail store and it includes fax service through SRFax.com, not sure about their pricing, but most of these fax services work in a way where you simply send your fax by email to the PhoneNumber@FaxService.com where Faxservice.com refers to whichever service you use. For example, with Myfax I send to 12021234567@myfax.com, I can just write something in the email body or I can attach a PDF, Word, Excel or other document to the email and it will be sent. Within a few minutes after you send the email you get a return email which tells you if your fax was successfully sent or not.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
For incoming faxes these services give you your own fax number, with Myfax I used to have a toll free number and if somebody sends you a fax to that number you get an email with the fax attached as a PDF file. Of course it's image based like any fax so you would have to run this through an OcR application or, if you use Jaws, you can use Convenient Ocr to recognize it.

And anybody can currently download the Jaws 2021 public beta which I assume is pretty close to the final release going by how things were in years past. The nice thing with Jaws is that you don't have to remove or upgrade your existing version, Jaws 2021 Public Beta can run and live on your system happily alongside Jaws 2020 or whatever you have and if something is not as you expect you can always unload Jaws 2021 and reload Jaws 2020.

I did a lot of trial and error with the Read Aloud settings and found the Voice Options. There are a lot of voices. The ones that start with Microsoft, then a name, then Online Natural are the better sounding voices, which unless someone can say how to get them installed for Jaws, probably are not going to be available since they are Microsoft’s “Online” voices.
