And how did you fix it? Basically what seems to happen is, my activation license for JAWS always seems to get lost and makes it run in demo mode. Even more confusing is the fact that the serial number tends to default to 801 when this happens, and the locking code changes as well. It mostly happens whenever I install new hardware on my machine. I wish I didn't have to reset my activation keys and reactivate JAWS when I install new or existing hardware drivers.

Hi, Annabelle. Hardware accelleration is just what it says. It's designed to
make Firefox work faster, but when used with speech, it causes problems. It
is not a requirement to run Firefox. If it were, there would not be an
option to not use it.

I think I may have figured out why Firefox stops responding. I went into the
Advanced tab of the Options dialog box, and I found a parameter called
"Hardware Acceleration". I unchecked the checkbox, and booooooom! It works
again! Yaaaayyyyy! However, I'm confused as to what this "Hardware

This part is above my pay grade and I had help with this, but yes the keystroke you want is put into the Default JKM file.  This is what my default JKM file looks like.

[Desktop Keys]
Shift+Control+1=MenuListScript
[Modifiers]
insert=17|3|0|2|0|0|0x402
numinsert=26|1|0|1|0|0|0x402
extinsert=11|3|0|1|0|0|0x402
I'm going to have someone of much higher power look at this thread and I think he'll have a solution.

Dennis,

Here's a little better explanation.  When I want to add or modify a script I do the following.

1. Open the Jaws Manager, with, Insert + F2, & open the Scripts Manager.
2. With the Script Manager open press, Alt + F, for the file menu & press the letter, E, to open the Shared File folder, shift + tab into the list of shared folders, & navigate to the, My Extensions JSS file.
3. Open the My Extensions JSS file, press, Control + A to select all the contents, then paste the contents of the clipboard into Notepad.  In Notepad is where I do all my editing and when I get all my editing done, I copy all the content of the Notepad text to the clipboard, then I use the steps from #2 above to go back to the My Extensions.JSS file, open it and delete the contents, Paste my edited text, and now compile.  This way my default JKM file stays in tact and now the same keystroke opens the menu list without screwing with the default JKM file that's already in place.

Here's what the dialogue should read:

This check box allows you to enable or disable automatic language detection. If you select this check box, JAWS detects changes in languages within documents which support language tags and then reads using the appropriate synthesizer voice for that language.
For example, if JAWS finds Spanish text on a Web page, that text is spoken using a Spanish voice. This detection only affects those synthesizers,
such as Eloquence or Vocalizer Expressive, that support multiple languages.
If you clear this check box, JAWS does not change the voice of the synthesizer when reading text written in another language.
By default, this option is checked in all applications except Microsoft Outlook.

I'm sorry I have to post this, but I retract any recommendation of the above mentioned group.  It is little beyond a den of software pirates, encouraging conversation of cracked versions of all sorts of software, including but not limited to JAWS.   I had not realized this upon joining and doing a quick reading of recent topics, but then the next flood of, "Is a cracked version of . . .?," conversations came flooding in.  Their own organization webpage openly hosts cracked software.

Avoid them like the plague.

there's still a lot to learn and many of us have questions that we would like answers to.

To that end I have created a mailing list for people to ask questions and to provide support on how to use the Zoom program.

I currently have just two rules that I'd like all users to follow.

1. All messages should be relevant to Zoom. This can include Zoom on Windows, Mac, iOS or Android.

2. No harassment or rudeness of any kind will be tolerated.

To join the group, send an email to

zoom-users+subscribe@groups.io

To send a message to the group the email address to use is

zoom-users@groups.io

Happy Zooming!

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go dodgers!

Hi Dennis,

When I add a script to My Extensions I do it manually because other info regarding the script needs to be added as well, then I put the whole file into the default and compile.  I can't explain this very well, but I'll send this message to someone that can.  In the meantime there's a download link below for 2 tutorials regarding the My Extensions & scripts.

Hi,

How do I get the Delete key to say “Delete?”

Second, When I put a script in MyExtensions.jss, then compile, then compile the default.jss (since it calls MyExtensions.jsb,) the script doesn’t work.

If I put it directly in Outlook script file, it does.

Other scripts in MyExtensions work, but some don’t.

I’ve made sure the keystroke isn’t being used elsewhere, but still no go.

Any ideas?

Thanks.  As for the other message about JAWS and the space key, it works the same way as exiting JAWS to silence the speech.  So, I will try your way the next time JAWS freezes up or goes silent for no reason.

Question, would the turning off of JAWS speech mute other sounds as well?  What I was doing before was just exiting JAWS then when needed using the shortcut I created for JAWS and turning JAWS back on.

Hello mario.
Unfortunately this was a while ago and I did not document what I had done.
However, I know I got rid of the portable music plugin, as well as the gracenote one. Possibly the library as well as I don't use it. I had an issue for a while there where winamp was taking a really long time to open; getting rid of unnecessary plugins seemed to fix this.

JM, I'm curious, what plugins did you get rid of to make Winamp a bit more stable, and what other things did you do?

Hey David.

Regarding winamp, there were a few things I did to set it up that made it work better – iE, getting rid of some dead plugins. I also use windows now to add stuff to playlists instead of doing this within the programme itself; it seems a bit more stable. Anyway, nothing wrong with having multiple players on your computer, either – I use VLC for video; winamp for audio (keep considering switching to foobar and not doing it).

As for the VLC preferences, I used to be able to do what you are describing. For quite some time now though, opening preferences (or in fact any of the other dialogue screens) does not give any feedback at all. As far as I know they are visually open, but screen-readers say nothing. I don’t know when this started but I feel like it was prior to the latest version being installed, which I have done. There must be some setting that has altered which is not revealing this info to my screen0-reader, but I am really not sure what it could be or what I must change. Would be nice, though, if I knew.

As far as I am aware I don’t have any problem accessing preferences in VLC with either Jaws or NVDA. I just hit control P and tab through the options.

It may be that there are parts I am missing that I am not aware of though? What is the problem for you?

I have resisted upgrading to the absolutely latest version of VLC I am still on 3.0.7.1.

I am glad others are still having a good experience with WinAmp. For me on several Windows installs on both my Desktop and Laptop I was experiencing lockup and crashes apart from the problem not playing some modern radio streams which VLC seemed to have no problem with. This experience made me personally think it was time to move on to something that was still being developed and supported.

nVDA still won't read preferences etc though for me. Does it work for you? Otherwise, yeah there is certainly more feedback for status and things like that.

I have no trouble with Winamp and the latest build of windows 10, and I use it for audio -- but I play a lot of vieos and VLC is hands down the best player I have found for that. There's a lot of power under the hood and really I've only scratched the surface.

There are masses of keystroke which work with VLC - in particular I love the ability to speed up and slow down podcasts on the fly but I agree that there is a big gap for scripts providing information.

I have looked in vain for VLC scripts.

As a guide to what could be done you only have to load the NVDA VLC addon which completely transforms VLC information feedback. For example or all the information you require you only have to press the I key.

Often I quit Jaws when I am going to be using VLC as the experience is so much better supported.

to given that WinAmp is increasingly unsupported and to some extent obsolete, I moved to VLC as WinAmp kept on crashing under Windows 10, and failed to play some streams that VLC had no problem with, it seems utterly bizarre that Jaws provides no support for VLC at all.

Seems to me that Vlc with Jaws isn’t that accessible? I did a Jaws+h command, but I didn’t get any kind of help info. Can you with Jaws and Vlc, see how long the audio is, how much time Elapsed and other info, maybe with Jaws scripts? Thanks for experiences you guys might have with this combo.
