You can give the software a spoken "wake up" command. Or you can use key stroke. At the moment the command to come out of sleep mode eludes me. Dan

As you note, this isn't the right forum for discussing comparisons. I have two laptops on my desk: one is a MacBook Pro 2013 running Mac OS, and the other is a Lenovo P51 that dual boots Linux and Windows 10. The brief answer is that they all have their accessibility advantages and drawbacks, and I find myself switching between them as appropriate. They all have room for improvement. A more detailed answer would be off-topic for the list. It very
much depends on what you need to do, and which applications you
prefer.

I'm very interested in hearing your experiences on Windows accessibility from the perspective of a long-time Mac user. This particular list may not be the most appropriate place to have that conversation but if you ever decide to document your experiences, including what you see as pros and cons regarding the accessibility of both operating systems, I hope that you might consider letting us know. I've been using Windows with screen readers since 1992 and I've used a Mac off and on for a period of four years. It's my opinion that using Windows with JAWS, particularly with Office, is the best accessibility experience I have ever had but your viewpoint may be very different considering how well you probably know the Mac. I don't intend to start a Mac vs PC discussion on a list intended to provide JAWS support but, again, please do let us know if you should decide to chronicle your journey, such as on a blog. Sorry, but I can’t remember the hotkey for using the dictation feature in JAWS. It works well, assuming you don’t have any weird words in your dictation. For example, when I used it quite a qhile back, I was writing my fictional stories, containing the word
Digimon. The dictation brought that out as did your mom, so it’s not as accurate as you’d like to believe on that score. It’s pretty good though for people who need to use it/just can’t remember the hotkey.

Rick, I have seen your message. However, I am not using JFW at the moment however I will be using it but hopefully by next weekend. And I will go take a look at the Google calendar for you. I have to get my desktop upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 and I also need to purchase just 2020, so it will definitely take me some time. So as I have it done I will look at this for you and send instructions.

Dear Listers:
I have listened to Freedom Scientific’s webinar about Google Calendar. I know how to create an event and know how to set the way I want notifications to appear—email, Desktop or Alert, using Settings. The funny thing that is happening is this. I have read that there are three ways of receiving Google Calendar notifications—by e-mail, desktop or Alert, but when I am in the Settings Menu and go to set the way in which I want to receive notifications, in the combo box in the Settings menu where I make my selection, there is no e-mail designation. When I am in the Settings menu and come to where you set your notifications I hit the Enter key to turn Forms Mode on. I currently have it set to Desktop notifications. I would like to set it to e-mail notifications but when I arrow up, instead of saying “E-Mail,” JAWS says, “Off.” I don’t understand. I have tried adjusting this setting using both Microsoft Edge and with my default Browser, Google Chrome, but nothing is working. Can any of you out there who use Google Calendar help and tell me how you receive your notifications using JAWS?

Hi, Kevin.
MS Word actually has a number of features to protect you from various threats that are spread via Word files. One of these features (opens in a new tab) in the read-only mode so it can’t affect your computer negatively. This may be the reason why your documents always open in the read-only mode. Turning this option off should fix the issue for you. list of 2 items
1. Open MS Word on your computer. 2. Click on the Options option at the lower-left corner and it’ll open the settings menu. 3. Click on the General tab in the left sidebar if you aren’t already there. Then on the right-hand side menu, scroll down and find the option that says Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view. 4. Uncheck the box for the option and click on OK to save the changes. 5. The Word files you’ve received as email attachments should now open in regular mode letting you edit them however you want.

JAWS and Accessing Dropbox from the System Tray
Mike B
Hi All,
I don't know when this started but, it has
been recently. When I invoke the, Insert + F11, keystroke to access the
system tray, down arrow to, Dropbox, and press enter the menues are no longer
available like before. I can't find the Exit button or preferences at
all. I can tab to find a lot of options I'm not interested in but, not the
options I would usually access.
However, if I press, Windows key + B, to take
me to the, Notification Chevron button, and down arrow to Dropbox, or if I go to
the desktop and I tab to the, Notification Chevron button, then down arrow to,
Dropbox, and press enter there are the options in all their glory that can be
navigated using the up and down arrow keys.
This is happening with the latest Dropbox and
all versions of Jaws I have installed which are, Jaws16 thru Jaws2021 Beta, but
not Jaws17, J17 I don't have installed.
Does anyone know why this is happening, or
better yet, does anyone know how to make Jaws work correctly in Dropbox from the
system tray? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
much.
Take care and stay safe. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Go Rams! Main's Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite government program.

Hank, In Windows 10: Go to “Settings” Go to “Ease of Access” Tab once to get to list of items under “ease of Access” Arrow down to “Interaction” This will give you a list of four items The top one is Speech Tab over to the list of items to set up Speech Dictation. Here you can turn on dictation and make other selections. There are other options which you can access from this screen or under the “Time & Language” area in settings. This also has a ”speech” settings area.
You can leave dictation on or allow for sleep until you call for it.
Hope this helps.

Hello everyone,
I have a client who wishes to use some dictation software with JAWS. We have tried the new Dictate add-in with Word and JAWS. It works reasonably well, but seems to lack some of the “bells and whistles” like literal numbers or word and correction. But for get thoughts on a page and going back and “cleaning up, it is a good choice.
I get very mixed reviews on Dragon Naturally speaking and JAWS. I read everything from it works well to they don’t play nice together and it is difficult to set up.
Wondering about experiences anyone may have had trying to use Dragon with JAWS. My person is running JAWS 2020, and Office 365 on a Windows 10 computer. If it does work what do we have to do to make it so? Also a question of a headset mic vs tabletop. My client doesn’t care for headsets, but if a must have, a recommendation for a reasonably priced one.
Thanks

When you open an attachment, it is in a temporary file location. I think if you then do a save as, it might be editable. Or just select all and paste into a new blank document.
