If you use latest version of visual studio, you will find access much
better. I am behind myself, but they have made lots of improvements.
I think the community edition is free, so try it out and see.

I’ve not had any real issues with Jaws 2020 and Microsoft 365.

The outlook thing of saying 0 messages is random, and seems to happen if I go to fast from launching it, to navigating in the inbox.

I can’t quite nail down the sequence, but if I exit Outlook, launch it again and wait a few seconds until I know it has had time to download the messages, it works flawlessly.

Outlook is now reporting the wrong number of messages in a folder.

For example, when I am in the folder list and read the line:

In Box 3 messages

But when I go to the message  list it says zero items and there are no messages.

If I hit the JAWS key page down, it still says 3 messages.

Any ideas about what could be wrong?

Yes.

I just tried it with the steps from a Microsoft article and it works.

I will give you the steps as well as provide the link.

IN your document, press Alt+f, I, p, e

Alt+f together, then I for info, p for protect, and e for encrypt.

BTW, this also works in Excel.

Here are the steps copied for the web site with the link at the end.

Protect a document with a password

Passwords are case-sensitive and can be a maximum of 15 characters long.

If you lose or forget your password, Word won't be able to recover it for you. Be sure to keep the a copy of the password in a safe place or create a strong password that you’ll remember.

1.  Go to File > Info > Protect Document > Encrypt with Password.

2.  Type a password, then type it again to confirm it.

3.  Save the file to make sure the password takes effect.

There is no really good method to do this.  Most can be worked around if the document is still in DOCX format.

It's not perfect, but I find it far more effective to save as PDF and send that out.  There are some who have PDF editors and know how to use them, but far fewer than the number who have MS-Office and know the tricks to get around protection.

If you really insist on sticking with DOCX you can use ALT+L,PE (Layout Ribbon, Restrict Editing), then navigate to the checkbox under Editing Restrictions and check it.  After it's checked, a dropdown box of options becomes accessible, the default is No Changes (Read Only), which is what you want.  Then navigate to the button, "Yes, start enforcing protection," and activate it.  At this point a dialog box comes up allowing you to choose password protection as the way to be able to unset editing restrictions or User Authentication.  Most use Password Protection, which makes you do the usual entering of the password you want in two boxes.  Then hit the OK key and the document can no longer be edited, even by you, unless you go back and turn off editing restrictions.

Hey Marty, No.  Nothing at all from it.  I think the quad it’s working though, because I can hear when I speak into the mike.  But I get no audio except that.  no audio works when I tab around to other programs I have open.

So, I have to use my other USB head set to discover what’s going on.

It all started when I uninstalled the UCX phone system from the computer, and the only other thing I did I took off Jaws 17.

But I kept all the shared components and I have Jaws 18 and 19 that work fine.

Thanks so much for your help.   Dave’s advice helped me, too.

I can be reached personally if this is too much “back and forth” on this list.

Blessings,

Judy

No it was not muted.

Now I still had another set of ear phones hooked in while trying this, because my speaker doesn’t work in my computer.  But it showed sound forge, and also the quad.  Neither looked unmuted.

I had the quad plugged into another ear phone USB port and no sound  came out in any of my tests.

Steps I used:

Opened sound forge.

Went to sndvol and made sure my levels were at 100 percent.

Made sure neither sound forge nor quad were muted.

Went to the sound mixer.

Checked that each was recognized and volumes good.

double checked for muted or unmuted.

What steps am I missing?

I am not at all familiar with that Mixer but have you looked at the default Windows  Sound Mixer to see if the application driving your mixer is there?

You would also need the application from which you are expecting an audio output to be running.

You would need to see if the volume levels for it are normal if that is the case.

Just press windows R and type Sndvol and enter.

In fact you can do this just by  pressing windows key and typing sndvol into the search box.

Then tabbing will navigate you to each of the applications running and show an individual volume level for each and a mute /unmute  check box.

If the application is not there it sounds like you would need to consult your mixer hardware sound properties.

Okay, Here’s what I need to know, related to this story:

I used to use a UCX client for answering work phone calls from home.  When I uninstalled that to use voices.com, suddenly now no audio comes out of my computer when I try and use my  quad capture mixer and headset.  In fact, when I plug in my headset, hooked to that mixer, no audio works.

You can either respond on the list, or email me privately at jredlichspeaks@...

Thank you much.

I thought I  would just post to say how I had resolved my VLC difficulty.

Some may recall last week that out of the blue VLC suddenly refused to play any media for me.

Altering   settings in VLC, including adjusting volume made no difference.

I therefore uninstalled and reinstalled VLC – still no difference.

I then had to install WinAmp to provide a replacement for the  last week.

Tonight I suddenly remembered that I had not checked the Windows Sound Mixer.

I typed sndvol after pressing the Windows key.

Sure enough when I came to the VLC slider  in the Windows Mixer I found that VLC had been set to 0%.

I changed this to 100%  and VLC suddenly blared back to life.

Quite what had happened in Windows to set VLC in the Sound Mixer to 0% is a complete mystery to me. I am the only person using this PC and I have been nowhere near the Windows Sound Mixer since last year.

Some errant electrons have obviously strayed where they should not stray.

Anyway I have VLC back working again and thought I would post this in case someone else encountered this or a similar issue.

I’m using the latest version of jaws and windows 10 with all current updates. I did not have the most up-to-date version of edge but I do now and I’m trying to get a custom to it. I’m sure they’ll be a learning curve but it does feel pretty familiar since I’ve been a chrome user for quite a while now.

For Jaws press Jaws Key + J and then Jaws Key + Control + V
For Windows press the Windows Key or Windows Key + R for the Run dialogue and type WinVer (short for Windows Version)

Hi all,

I'm looking for some tips on using the Edge browser with Jaws.
Honestly, I don't even know how to verify that I am running the newer more accessible version of Edge or how to check that.

Also, are there certain settings that should be changed to give a better browsing experience?

Any resources or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Kim

Hi list,

I haven’t followed this thread, but I want to know why chrome is better—or if it is better. I generally use Firefox now. I have used Edge now and then, but if it will work well for me using the chrome  version, then I’ll try it.

Thanks for that keystroke. I definitely do not have the latest version
which is probably much of my problem.
