Specs for a new desktop computer
Ralph Supernaw
It’s looking like I will be searching for a new desktop computer. I have not been able to figure out what makes the most difference in the speed or snappiness of the computer when using Jaws with typical applications. So, I’d appreciate any information you techy types can pass along.
I know Ram makes a big difference. What I don’t know is how much RAM is helpful and how much is overkill.
How much difference does multiple thread processing make? How many threads are a good number to shoot for?
How much difference does an SSD drive make? If they make a significant difference in speed, what files should be on them?
Being totally blind I don’t need a fancy display. But, does a better video card affect the speed of the computer?
Are there other ways to increase the speed of the computer?
Thanks.

Cook, Steve
I have noticed this as well. If I alt tab to another program and come back, JAWS will then read the material.

I've noticed this as well. I think I can usually get to it by using insert B to read the window, but I don't have one handy to test.
There are things about chrome-based browser accessibility that don't impress me, which is one reason I keep Firefox around.

jaws and website dialogues
Patrick Murphy
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has seen this. When a web site produces a dialogue box with an ok button on it, jaws only says “ok”. Lets say the name of the web site is “john”. If you go into the virtual viewer, you can see that the window contains “john says” and then the message, followed by the “ok” button. I hope i am explaining this right. In order to see the full message that the web site has produced, you have to use the virtual viewer. This is the same for jaws 2018 and 2020. The same effect is produced using google chrome and ms edge (latest versions of both). Internet explorer always read out the full dialogue box. There seems to be a lot of small problems with chrome based browsers. Is there some global setting i am missing to make the overall chrome experience better? Any ideas?
Regards, pat

Excel Issue
Randy Meyer
In the last week, I noticed Excel slowing down when I am entering and editing formulas. It takes two seconds to say a character when I am arrowing through the formula. I am using latest Jaws 2020 and latest MS office 365 downloaded to my computer. Things get so slow that my computer basically freezes and I have to hit enter and give up editing the formula.
I have used Excel for a longtime and never had this issue until recently. Does anyone have any suggestions for any changes I could make to improve the performance back to useable?

Re: Page Breaks in Microsoft Word
Hi Lary/all, It occurs to me very often, especially when students send their essays. Having a braille display, what I do is press the appropriate cursor routing button where the last character of the previous page is, and just arrow to the right once. It usually goes to the correct page, and there are no more such jumpings. Hope this helps, Takis

Hi, Not sure if I’ve sent something to this list about this. Something has changed. Now I hear at the end of page 1 dialogue I’ve written, and it goes to page 3 and skips page 2 etc. I think I’ve fixed this issue before but don’t think I kept that piece of information. I do not hear this in Narrator at all. I do hear it with all versions of JAWS on my PC. Thoughts? Larry

It is fixed. Richard Turner’s advice eventually helped. The problem is that when you deal with Buttons and Microsoft, there is no confirmation after you press enter on the button. You have to go back in to the document to see if changes have taken effect. Well, they finally did. Thanks to all for your help. Larry

Hi, Larry. Make sure in the Layout tab that columns is set to 1.
1. Click the Layout tab. 2. Click the Columns button and choose Two.
Also, if all else fails, switch from Print View to Web Layout View.
1. ALT plus F, T for Word Options. 2. Arrow down to Advanced. 3. Under General, check the Allow opening a document in Draft view check box. 4. Press ENTER on OK. 5. On the View tab, select Web Layout View in the Document Views group.

I have seen this issue before, but am not yet experiencing it here. I currently use Windows 10 with Office 365 and the latest version of Jaws 2020.
I’ll save these instructions for future reference, but wonder if there is a way to do this globally, rather than for each individual document?
Thanks for any additional suggestions.

Also on the view tab, tab a bunch and make sure it doesn’t say Multipage after the zoom info. If it does, arrow down to one page and hit enter. I have had to do that with a couple of documents in the last few days. Quite annoying.

Just as with Dropbox, once you signed into OneDrive with your Microsoft account allyou have do do is make sure all the files you want to sync are inside the OneDrive folder. You do have to check OneDrive settings as by default it may keep content more in the cloud, but you can choose for everything to download so that a local copy is on your device.

I would like to start using Microsoft OneDrive so I can have the same files on my desktop computer and ElBraille computer. Does anyone know where I can find tips on using OneDrive, or a tutorial?
I would like my files to be kept locally on each computer and constantly synchronized with OneDrive. That way I could work on a file even if the internet is not available and it would synchronize and update when the internet became available.
Thank you for your help.

When you get to the point at which up or down arrow do not work, have you tried right or left arrow? I got passed one of those spots doing that, but it is still wrong, that should not be happening.
