Re: Number of Unread mails in Outlook 2016 not read by Jaws

What you describe can be changed in Options and it is not what I am talking about. What I mean is that if I use Control+Y to go to my folder list and I then go to one of my other emails and the Inbox I usually see even before I enter on the Inbox and go to it if there are unread emails and how many. All my Windows 7 with office 2016 desktops do this as does my old laptop which runs Windows 10 with Office 2016, but this new laptop does not show th number of unread messages after it says “Inbox”. If I go into the inbox and then do a Jaws Key+Page down it will read the status line and tell me how many messages I have and how many are unread, but on my other computers I don’t even have to go into the Inbox to know if I have unread messages.

As for what you describe, you can change this by going to Options in Outlook, then go to the “Advanced” tab and tab I think twice to where it says “Reading Pane”. Activate this and uncheck “Mark item as read when selection changes”.

If this is unchecked messages will continue to show as Unread until you actually open them.

I’ll tell you what.

When I first encounter a message it will say unread.

If I arrow down and then back to it, it no longer says unread. It doesn’t say read but it doesn’t say unread on the second pass shall we  say.

Now tab about 10 times and you find "Select which icons appear on the

Instead of opening Settings then going to personalizaion and then to Select

One way to get to any command on the ribbon is with the "tell me what you want to do" feature which came with Office 2016.

Open an new message window with Ctrl + N, then press Alt + Q, start typing signature and a list of search results appears below. DownArrow to signature and take it from there. You can use the same method to find any command on the ribbon. The trick is to get in a situation where the command you want is on the ribbon; signatures are on the Insert tab when you're in a message, but when you're in a folder they aren't on the ribbon and you have to use the backstage method Kimsan mentioned.

Many sub-dialogs in Outlook, various versions, have been hit-and-miss over the years. I don't think it's a bug with JAWS, as much as it's MS tinkering with their UI and making it more or less difficult to do things. Try using the JAWS cursor when you're looking for that signature dialog.

Number of Unread mails in Outlook 2016 not read by Jaws

Hi,

On my Windows 10 laptop running Outlook 2016 Jaws won’t say, for example, “Inbox, 3 unread” when I go to Control+Y for the folder list. On all my other computers Jaws will read how many unread messages are in each of my Inboxes, on this one Jaws will just say “Inbox” or “Deleted Items”, but not how many unread emails are in each folder. Re: My Windows 10 version is not version 15 or 16 as reported on the list.

Hi Peter,

Just find the Windows 10 download page and manually run the anniversary update. This will get the installation going and also install a tool called the Windows 10 Updade Assistant. Here is a brief description from the Windows 10 Update Assistant page and the direct link for it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3159635/windows-10-update-assistant

To help keep all Windows 10 systems secure and provide the latest features and improvements, the Windows 10 Update Assistant downloads and starts the setup for Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607). The Windows 10 Update Assistant will be deployed to Windows 10 PCs that have not yet had the latest update installed.

The direct link for the Windows 10 Download page (there is also a link to it on the above Windows 10 Update Assistant page) is:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

It’s a simple page, just go to the “Update Now” link and it will start.

Hello list,

On this list, it was reported that we could find out if we had the original or anniversary version of Windows 10,
by running:

  Winver

I have two computers with Windows Home and Pro editions. I am given the version different than version 15 or 16.

Here are the appropriate lines:

   Version 10.0 (build 10240)

   Copyright 2015 for Windows 10 …

The Windows 10 Home operating system and its user interface are protected …

My other edition has the words: Windows Home Pro operating system…

There is no “15” or 16” to denote the version.

I know that I have the pre-anniversary versions by the layout of the Start menu.

My Start menus have the most used applications as a sub menu. Within the sub menu are that application’s recently accessed documents.

These sub menus are not in the anniversary edition.

Do any other Windows 10 users also have this form of the version and build instead of version 15 or 16? Is there a reason for the difference?

Thanks.

Peter T.

Go to where you can hide/show your system tray icons, make sure to show the icon for the clock, then you can find it in the system tray, press enter on it and select "Options" where you can then select which tone to play and if you want to play only hourly chimes (the default) or also half hour and quarter hour chimes.

Thanks, Bill. That was exactly the dilemma I got myself into. I thought control H is the standard command to open  history in any browser, and do it is for the sighted. But once in, I couldn't navigate, even though I could see the target! Your way worked great! Thanks for sharing.

Re: My Windows 10 version is not version 15 or 16 as reported on the list.

Hi,

Another possibility is that you have deferred upgrades turned on (for Pro and higher).

For future reference: the version Peter speaks of is Windows 10 RTM (aka Version 1507), which has entered end of support countdown (no more updates for consumers and businesses from March 26, 2017; the exception is LTSB).

Cheers,

Joseph

I agree with you on this. You probably would be better served to create the signature you want in Word, and then copy it over to the field in Outlook.

Re: system tray not displaying all turned on icons in windows 10

There are a couple of issues that could be at play here:

  1. Icons only appear in the notification area if a program/service is currently active.
  2. The settings under Personalization, Taskbar Pane, Select which icons appear on the taskbar link is the primary control for what remains permanently visible in the notification area of the taskbar.
  3. Turn system icons on or off is not the primary control for what remains permanently visible in the notification area of the taskbar since a lot of these programs/services are not often active.  They tend to pop in and out, with the exception of Network (WiFi or Ethernet status), battery, volume, clock, and action center.   I have location turned on but the location icon only appears when location service is being used.
  4. Anything else that has a notification area/system tray icon that is not set to appear on the taskbar will be in the notification overflow area that Jeanette McAllister has already mentioned.
