Also, on an ISP's router/modem, you can usually log into your account on-line, like if you were going to pay your bill on-line, and you can get your router's password there.

I am quite partial to the higher-end Netgear routers but also had an Asus one and a Cisco and I don’t think I had a router in the last 10 years which didn’t get accessed via a web interface and where I couldn’t use the interface.

Too bad you guys are I think all in the US, I have a Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 triband router which I’d gladly sell for a good price, but shipping would probably be expensive.

I have switched to the Netgear Orbi mesh system both at home and, at my retail store I use the Orbi Pro/business version and this Nighthawk and my Asus RT-AC3200 Tri-Band Gigabit Router for which I paid over $300 Canadian are just sitting on a shelf.

Hi group,

 

On my Win 10 PC I’m using J 2020.2003.13 and Word 365. I am making address labels, and when I type or paste text into the address field, I am unable to review the text with Jaws. When I curser around I get nothing. No blank blank or anything, and this is using PC and Jaws cursor. If I use the touch cursor, I can get to where I can see the address on one line, which is better than nothing, I guess. A sighted person can see the address fine, and it prints fine on the label but I really need to be able to review and edit and make sure it’s correct before I print. I don’t recall when this issue began,   but I know it was happening in J 2019. Word is maximized and restarting Jaws doesn’t help. I just tried it with J 2018 with the same result.

I welcome your suggestions. Maybe I should contact FS tech support but often the info I get from this list is much more helpful. 😀

Hi, Amy. Try creating a configuration file in JAWS, by using Insert plus F2, Go to Settings Center while Outlook is open, then create the configuration file, with Quick Settings turned off, and see if this remedies the problem.

I’m running Windows 10, Jaws 2020, with Outlook 2016 (not 365, but just the stand-alone Office 2016 that my employer provides). I’ve had this problem with all my 4 machines (which include a Dell Latitude, another Lenovo P52, and a Dell Desktop), running Windows 10 with Jaws 2019 or Jaws 2020.

Here is the problem. When I reply to an email using control+r, the reply window opens as it should, but when I start typing, it is quickly obvious that Jaws has dropped into Quick Navigation mode, so that if I type letter T, Jaws goes looking for a table, or the letter P sends it looking for the next paragraph.  If I close that reply, and try again, the problem is gone. I can also hit Jaws key + z and turn off Quick Navigation. Unfortunately, this dropping into Quick Navigation mode doesn’t happen on every reply, and I have not been able to discern any pattern whatsoever on when it will happen and when it won’t. it is driving me crazy! I have to process tons of emails per day, and when I have to constantly back-track to start a reply over again, it wastes time and energy. Not to mention it is totally frustrating!  I just learned recently that alt+r also opens the reply window, and it may be that the problem doesn’t occur then – I haven’t fully tested that. It will be hard for me to use alt+r instead of control+r, but I’ll re-train myself if I have to to avoid this problem. I don't use Outlook 2016, I run Outlook Express, so this is just something to try if you have the following setting in Outlook2016.  While in Outlook open Jaws quick settings, Insert + V.  Down arrow to General Mail Settings and see if you have this setting,
Messages automatically read, if it's checked try unchecking it, then tab to and press enter on the Okay button to see if this'll help.
 
Also while in Outlook, make sure the window is maximized, Windows key + up arrow, or, Alt + spacebar, let up and press the letter, X.

Most routers these days use a web interface.
We just bought a Lynksys router and the interface is quite accessible using Jaws.
And, the one issue we ran into was dealt with easily by calling their toll free support line.
I don't remember the model number off hand.

I am quite partial to the higher-end Netgear routers but also had an Asus one and a Cisco and I don’t think I had a router in the last 10 years which didn’t get accessed via a web interface and where I couldn’t use the interface.

Too bad you guys are I think all in the US, I have a Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 triband router which I’d gladly sell for a good price, but shipping would probably be expensive.

I have switched to the Netgear Orbi mesh system both at home and, at my retail store I use the Orbi Pro/business version and this Nighthawk and my Asus RT-AC3200 Tri-Band Gigabit Router for which I paid over $300 Canadian are just sitting on a shelf.

                                                Apart from learning a muscle memory of alt r rather than control r, which may be your best bet, the only user action I can think of is to force Outlook to send your emails as plain text only. You should be able to set this up in mail settings  and logically this should preclude jaws from recognising any html elements from which it can attempt to  quick navigate to. Replying or sending mails in plain text would need to be acceptable to your employer’s mail formats I guess.

The other quick way to force a refocus into an edit box is to hit the alt key twice quickly. This may resolve your problem more quickly but is likely to be just as annoying as other actions you are having to take I suspect.

I agree FS should be more helpful, especially as you are in an employment situation  for which Jaws is supposed to be primarily focussed.

When I reply to an email using control+r, the reply window opens as it should, but when I start typing, it is quickly obvious that Jaws has dropped into Quick Navigation mode, so that if I type letter T, Jaws goes looking for a table, or the letter P sends it looking for the next paragraph.  If I close that reply, and try again, the problem is gone. I can also hit Jaws key + z and turn off Quick Navigation. Unfortunately, this dropping into Quick Navigation mode doesn’t happen on every reply, and I have not been able to discern any pattern whatsoever on when it will happen and when it won’t. it is driving me crazy! I have to process tons of emails per day, and when I have to constantly back-track to start a reply over again, it wastes time and energy. Not to mention it is totally frustrating!  I just learned recently that alt+r also opens the reply window, and it may be that the problem doesn’t occur then – I haven’t fully tested that. It will be hard for me to use alt+r instead of control+r, but I’ll re-train myself if I have to to avoid this problem. FS says various things – your scripts are corrupted (not so – in my recent Jaws 2020 install, I didn’t merge my settings from Jaws 2019), video drivers need updating (that didn’t help), it all gets better with Outlook 365 (that is months away at my place of employment), that was a problem in earlier versions but not any  more (not true). I’ve scoured the web looking for any mention of this and find nothing. How can that be? What is so different about my installation that this problem plagues me but no one else? not entirely true.
i don't know how you would find outbefore you buy. but there have been a few routers that use a windows like interface that is mostly mouse driven.
and i don't know if they would work with screen readers.

Some are more accessible via the web interface more than others.
I currently use a Linksys Smart router, and it works best with Internet Explorer.
Even with that, although you can get to the links either with space bar, or enter key, they don't say "link", so you have to hope that you are entering on a link.
Listing links won't expose them as links.
But I am never the less able to configure it.
It is called "smart" because it can prioritize the devices based on type of usage, and you are supposed to drag an item up or down the list of devices, but I have never been able to make this work with a screenreader.
Other than that, I can set it up and save the configuration file and do updates and all the normal stuff with it.
It is both 2.4 and 5 GHZ, and has three antennas, 4 ports, and 2 USB ports.

If you get any recommendations, ping me as well. Mine hasn't bit the dust just yet, but I don't think it's receiving firmware updates, and for some reason, my wifi has gotten silly. I have an iPhone 8 that drops connections very frequently, and I have to reboot the router daily or it bogs down pretty quick. I'm not sure if the iphone is the problem or the router, because other devices work fine on the thing, but it's puzzling.
