Tom,

Just press that keystroke again and it should revert. Or press it twice quickly again to see that it reverts, and is saved.

Well, just answered my own question... Here's what you hear when you use the JAWS+1 keyboard help feature and press Ctrl+Insert+NumPad minus:

If the Tether option is on, the JAWS Cursor will follow the PC cursor as it moves. You can still navigate and explore with the JAWS Cursor independently, but if the PC cursor moves, the JAWS Cursor will follow. To save your current setting so JFW will remember it the next time you restart, press twice quickly within a second. When you save, JAWS will announce the current setting being stored.

Good morning;
Well, this is interesting.
I'm running jaws 17&18, windows 10, office 2016, not experiencing this
issue.
Curious to know, what virous program are you using?
I'm wondering if there's some sort of scanning, or process which allows jaws
to lose focus.
Perhaps there's a program or process running in the background.

Have a good day.

Mike and all:

Just for the sake of experimentation, I shut down, and then re-booted my computer here.

Once the computer rebooted, I checked, and things went back to the default setting “Jaws will not follow PC).

So, apparently, this toggle setting is not permanent.

It is good to know about, though, just in case it is needed.

Dave:

I just did what you suggested, and saved the setting so that Jaws will follow PC.

Now, I’m wondering what you do if you want to go back to the way things originally were?

Well, just answered my own question... Here's what you hear when you use the JAWS+1 keyboard help feature and press Ctrl+Insert+NumPad minus:

If the Tether option is on, the JAWS Cursor will follow the PC cursor as it moves. You can still navigate and explore with the JAWS Cursor independently, but if the PC cursor moves, the JAWS Cursor will follow. To save your current setting so JFW will remember it the next time you restart, press twice quickly within a second. When you save, JAWS will announce the current setting being stored.

Hi,

I listened to a podcast that said that Office 2016 is the best version to invest in, because all of the improvements being done to make screen readers much more accessible with MS office will only be done in 2016. It is worth it, and 365 is by far where the accessibility is focused.

If you buy an old version, it will cease to be supported (including bug

fixes

and security updates) years before the latest version becomes unsupported.

In

other words, you'll have to pay for an upgrade sooner.

If I were buying, I wouldn't purchase an old version.

Office 2010 or 2013

Cristóbal

Hello list,

So a companion post to my message from a few days ago. I bought a tower Windows 10 desktop and am now considering on whether to get an Office 2010 license key for it which I am currently using on my other systems and am familiar with or if there is any benefit in getting a 2013 or 2016 version. Is there anything in the newer versions of Office, in particular Outlook, Word, Excel that would merit trying one of them out?

Learning curve aside, are there any substantial issues or quirks with Jaws and the newer versions of Office. From time to time, I recall threads having to do with this or that Office 2013/2016 and JFW issue, but as it didn’t affect me, I didn’t pay them much attention. I’m running the latest 12/5/17 JFW update.

I plan on buying the32 bit version since there’s no real advantage of getting the 64 bit one even though the machine will be 64 bit.

Any input would be appreciated.

thanks,

me too, misbehaving JAWS while typing ..RE: Recent Jaws issue with typing and focus jumping around

Bill Spiry

Interesting. Just noticed this post. I’m having a similar issue in word and outlook. Using latest jaws for win 10, 64bit, office 365 pro.

Short version, when I start a new doc or email sometimes jaws starts spewing each character and jumping around as I begin typing, regardless of the fact that I have it set to echo words only. If I hit return, and with arrow move the cursor off the line I’m typing and back up to that line, it usually stops misbehaving but intermittently it comes up with other docs and emails. Have talked with FS and they didn’t have a clue, they wanted to blame Microsoft. No solution yet, wondering if this is more widespread?

Re: Recent Jaws issue with typing and focus jumping around

Dave...

Well, this is interesting.
I'm running jaws 17&18, windows 10, office 2016, not experiencing this

Curious to know, what virous program are you using?
I'm wondering if there's some sort of scanning, or process which allows jaws
to lose focus.
Perhaps there's a program or process running in the background.

Have a good day.

Re: Indicating upper case

Marquette, Ed <ed.marquette@...>

When you are serious about proofreading, don’t rely on the pitch change to identify capital letters, especially if you are using a voice other than Eloquence.  I always change to one of the proof reading schemes.  Press JAWS Key + Alt + s.  There are two proof reading choices.  With those, instead of hearing a pitch change, which simply cannot be heard with some voices, the computer says “cap” for a term with initial caps or “all cap” for a term in solid capital letters.

You also get the benefit of voice inflection and pitch changes to identify bold, underline, and so on.

If you are proofing by reading line at a time, set Jaws to identify capital letters by word, character, and line.

If you are really serious about indents, missing quote marks, and the like, turn on text analyzer too.

Subject: Indicating upper case

Hi all,

I just got a Windows 10 laptop and installed the latest JAWS on it.  When proofreading in Word 2010 by line in a document I cannot figure out how to get JAWS to indicate upper case changes.  I changed the setting for a "read all" but I proofread by line as I am a medical transcriptionist.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee Anne

I have the issue when using Skype on windows 10 with JAWS 18, but I am not sure if it is not a boot camp issue on this particular laptop.

Well, this is interesting.
I'm running jaws 17&18, windows 10, office 2016, not experiencing this issue.
Curious to know, what virous program are you using?
I'm wondering if there's some sort of scanning, or process which allows jaws to lose focus.
Perhaps there's a program or process running in the background.

Good point about the touchpad on laptops. Mine is also turned off.
However some laptops also have a touchstick, located between the F,

I have to believe that in all my typing, I must have accidentally

issue and I don’t experience it in a standard Word document. Only in
Outlook messages. My version of Outlook is 2010 and my messages are
set to HTML. I am using the most recent version of Jaws 18.

Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing this issue or what
setting I might try to change to fix it? That or is there some sort
of set to default setting in Outlook for composing messages?

Thanks,

It should work the same as on your previous computer. Some of the voices do
better than others, though. Eloquence indicates caps better than Samantha,
for example.

A couple of things to try.

Go to JAWS, options menu, voice settings, adjust voice settings, and check
that the pitch change is at least 20%.

Go to settings center, default all programs, text processing, general, and
set the caps recognition the way you want it--by word, character, etc.

Good luck.

set to HTML. I am using the most recent version of Jaws 18.

Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing this issue or what
setting I might try to change to fix it? That or is there some sort
of set to default setting in Outlook for composing messages?

Thanks,

Lee Ann:

1. Press Insert-J.
2. You will be in Options. Arrow down once to Basic.
3. Press Right Arrow; then Down Arrow once to Voices.
4. Press Enter.
5. Tab about eight times until you hear something like
voice adjust caps or shift. You would type, like I have mine
set at 35. Type 35, 40, whatever pitch you want.
6. Tab to OK.
7. Press Escape.

Bye for now,

Carolyn

Subject: Indicating upper case

Hi all,

I just got a Windows 10 laptop and installed the latest JAWS
on it. When proofreading in Word 2010 by line in a document
I cannot figure out how to get JAWS to indicate upper case
changes. I changed the setting for a "read all" but I
proofread by line as I am a medical transcriptionist. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee Anne
