Howdy Y'all,

For those that might not know this, & something I just learned today:

If you ever need to run J17 latest version, J17.0.2727, or J18 in default mode you can do this using the Layered Keystrokes feature.  Hold down the, Insert / Jaws key, then press the spacebar, to open, Layered Keystrokes, now release both keys, & press the letter, Z.  This will put Jaws in default settings mode.  This series of keystrokes is a toggle, so invoke them again to go back to running Jaws with your settings.

Note: This only works with the latest version of J17 & J18 all versions.  This will not work with any J17 versions prior to J17.0.2727.

Take care.

Are you using JAWS? If so, You just hit JAWS Key 2, and keep
hitting it until you get your choice, character, word,
character and word or none. You can set that for all
programs if you want to. An easy way is to hit JAWS Key-V.
Keep pressing Down Arrow until you get typing echo choices.
That will permanently set it to your choice of settings.
Then, if for any reason you would like to have a temporary
change you have the option of JAWS Key-2.

unexpected verbalizations

Mario

using JAWS 16, I've been experiencing some weird behavior lately.
in a slightly higher pitch, JAWS will spontaneously say the number of
blank spaces followed by a pause before some text within a sentence and
sometimes at the end of a sentence.

JAWS will also speak in a deeper and slower voice, like when JAWS runs
out of breath when reading a long continuous stream of words.

for example: after Bellarc Advisor finishes it's updating and analyzing
and finally displays it's report, reviewing line by line, JAWS will say
3 spaces, The information on this page was created locally on your
computer by the Belarc Advisor. 3 spaces, Your computer profile, 3
spaces, was not sent to a web server. Copyright, (deep and slow voice),
2000-2016, back to normal voice), Belarc, Inc. All rights reserved.

reloading JAWS does not clear up this occurrence. it happens on no
particular website and reading local HTML documents. I think this is
only happening to me and not a wide spread issue.

I've checked the text analyzer setting in the default and browser
configuration settings in settings center. it is off.
I've also checked my speech and sounds scheme, which is set to classic.
unloading and starting JAWS with default settings clears up the above
problem, but starting JAWS normally exhibits the problems, but the
configuration settings are no different as opposed to when the problem
occurs.

any suggestions as what to do to troubleshoot this annoyance?

BrailleNote mpower as a bluetooth braille display with jaws?

dhf360@...

    Hi all.
I have a BrailleNote mpower with keysoft 7.2. I can't upgrade it to 8.1 because humanware doesn't support it now.
In the manual I read that this device can be connected to a computer by bluetooth or serial and acts as a braille display.
Well, my computer hasn't serial, then I tried bluetooth. But I cant figure how to set it with NVDA or jaws.
I installed Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 to get activeSync service on bluetooth. Then I paired it, set brailleNote as a braille terminal, but NVDA or JAWS can't detect it as a braille display.
Sometimes brailleNote fails to active braille terminal mode. Says serial port is unavailable. I restart the connection and solve it.
Also I added a bluetooth serial input port in my computer. From Windows mobile device center Y can access brailleNote by this port, even I can access to braillenote files etc.
I tried to select this bluetooth serial port on the braille display port configuration, but NVDA shows an error.
I tried it on windows 7 and 8.1.
Also I tried to configure this device with iPhone, since iPhone offers activeSync service but VoiceOver seems to be incompatible with this protocol.
I need help because at this time, I only have Access to this braille display.
Thanks :)

How do I know when windows 10 refresh is done?

Robert Logue

It took a long time,. But, I finally got the anniversary addition to windows 10 on my PC.
I haven't installed Jaws yet. The system was a little unstable because I kept my documents which kept some of my user settings.
So, I'm doing windows refresh. This time I chose to remove all my documents and settings. I wonder how I will know when it's done. I suppose I could just press windows key plus enter to start narrator but I don't want to interrupt the update process by trying that too soon.
I sure hope I get a more stable computer now.
Thanks.

No, not ad, just edit, the result of fairly poor quality.  It didn’t come from the Kenwood site, as it was too old at the time—the operating manual for a TS850S AT, a RIG I’VE owned and run since 1995.

Ted,

Did you add something to that Kenwood manual?   I ask this only because there are at least two programs I've recommended to my blind clients who keep getting electronically handed image PDFs that they know are actually text-based, that can OCR process that file and allow you to save it with the OCR text layer as a part of the whole thing.   This certainly beats having to key in anything by hand, at least it generally does.

While the two programs, both from Tracker Software, PDF-XChange Editor (install the free version, available on their downloads main page) or PDF-XChange Viewer (activate the Discontinued Downloads link on the downloads main page), are not 100% accessible in their entirety the OCR processing and saving steps are.  The accuracy is remarkably high, even for some pretty crappy original image scanned PDFs if you don't set the accuracy level to high (which wants "perfect" scans so that no mistakes are ever allowed) - medium is the default.

No, when I said OS, that’s exactly what I meant.  I haven’t used 10 yet, and wondered if folks on older systems were  having these problems too.  sounds as if they are.

was initially surprised we’re going to 16, then remembered we haven’t upgraded since Office2010; we’re conservative here, and often behind the curve. Overall, I think we’re right; living on the bleeding edge can get  you in a peck of trouble.

Ted,

You're confusing the issue now by referring to an OS 7 or OS 10, and moving to Office version 2016. Be more concise and talk about Office 2007, 2010, and 2016 -- not OS 7 or 10.

Interesting. Just noticed this post. I’m having a similar issue in word and outlook. Using latest jaws for win 10, 64bit, office 365 pro.

Short version, when I start a new doc or email sometimes jaws starts spewing each character and jumping around as I begin typing, regardless of the fact that I have it set to echo words only. If I hit return, and with arrow move the cursor off the line I’m typing and back up to that line, it usually stops misbehaving but intermittently it comes up with other docs and emails. Have talked with FS and they didn’t have a clue, they wanted to blame Microsoft. No solution yet, wondering if this is more widespread?

Well, this is interesting.
I'm running jaws 17&18, windows 10, office 2016, not experiencing this
issue.
Curious to know, what virous program are you using?
I'm wondering if there's some sort of scanning, or process which allows jaws
to lose focus.
Perhaps there's a program or process running in the background.

Have a good day.

I concur with several previous posters in that I'd stick with 2010 unless you have the need to actually edit existing PDF documents using Word, in which case I'd go with 2013.

I virtually never edit existing PDFs and most of the PDF files I create are straight from Word documents using PDF Creator, which creates a virtual printer that does the conversion into PDF.  I use that because it creates PDF files that are generally much smaller than Microsoft's own save as PDF feature in Office 2010.

I really disliked the interface change in 2013 as well.  I've installed it for several clients.

Ted,

The first version of JAWS I ever worked with was 10, and that was very briefly.  Over the years there have been enough changes to both JAWS and MS-Office that I find it impossible to say that it's definitely JAWS that's causing this issue or even that it is an issue.  I say the latter only because while I can see and read the document when it's up on my screen in Protected View under Word 2010 I can do literally nothing else with it as far as any of the MS-Word ribbon tabs - everything is stippled out on everything but the File tab which allows you to turn off Protected View.

There may be no way, without breaching intentional security measures in Office, JAWS, or both to allow Protected View text to be read though I can't say that for certain.  This is one of the reasons I promptly have my blind and visually-impaired (and, often, sighted) clients turn off Protected View at the program level if they know they have to be selective about the sources of the Office files that they're willing to download and open.

Someone who knows the nuts and bolts about how JAWS and Office are interacting would have to give a definitive answer, but I doubt this situation would be allowed to remain across multiple JAWS and Office releases if some security measure did not have to be intentionally breached to work around it.  Since it's possible for the user to set things up such that the issue can be avoided entirely it's even less pressing to work around.

Ted,

You're confusing the issue now by referring to an OS 7 or OS 10, and moving to Office version 2016. Be more concise and talk about Office 2007, 2010, and 2016 -- not OS 7 or 10.

Anybody have this behavior in an OS earlier than 10?  We use 7 here, but, as stated before, we’re about to go to office 2016.

Good morning;

Thanks, Bill. That worked. I didn't ask, but had the same
problem. Thanks again!

Bye for now,

Carolyn

I looked on Google, tom, and it says that if you find one of
your individual favorites while in Internet Explorer 11,
then click your Applications key, there will be an option in
that context menu which will be labelled "Sort By Name".
Clicking this option is supposed to cause Favorites to be
sorted alphabetically while in Internet Explorer 11.

Hello.

Can someone tell me how to get my Internet favorites
arranged alphabetically in Internet Explorer 11?

Currently, my favorites are not listed
alphabetically. Instead, they appear to be listed
chronologically according to when I added the web sites to
my favorites list, with the most recently-added favorites
appearing at the bottom of the list.

Thanks as always!

Re: Microsoft Word

Are you using JAWS? If so, You just hit JAWS Key 2, and keep
hitting it until you get your choice, character, word,
character and word or none. You can set that for all
programs if you want to. An easy way is to hit JAWS Key-V.
Keep pressing Down Arrow until you get typing echo choices.
That will permanently set it to your choice of settings.
Then, if for any reason you would like to have a temporary
change you have the option of JAWS Key-2.

Bye for now,

Carolyn

Hello I just installed Microsoft Office on my computer and
when I type on a word document it does not speak (say the
letters) I am typing. Can I correct this? Actually it is
not doing it as I type this either....

Thank you for any input you may have.

Tom,  while in your favorites folder in IE, press right mouse click button and down arrow to sort and choose to sort by name.

Interestingly, when I go to my internet favorites in C users under my name, the favorites are listed alphabetically, just the way I want them.

However, when I bring up internet Explorer 11, the favorites are not listed alphabetically.  Instead, as I noted before, they are listed chronologically, according to when I added them to my favorites list.

I’m puzzled as to how to get the favorites list under c users to be reflected in IE 11 itself, when I bring it up.

Tom,

Here's what I do in Windows 7....

I go to my favorites folder, located in C:\users\[MyUserName] and when the folder list is being displayed:

View menu

O for organize

Arrow to name

press enter.

If it reverses them, then do a view/organize/name once again to flip.
