The command to add a webpage to favorites in Firefox is control D. To bring
up the list of favorites is alt B. They are called Bookmarks in Firefox.

It is called auto fill and I am not sure where to set the setting in the ribbons.

I would go to the ribbons and tab all the way to you hear search edit field and type in auto fill  cell.

There is (or used to be) a setting in JAWS, in Excel, or in both such that if one begins typing an entry that matches the first few letters in the cell above, Excel will finish the entry automatically with the contents of the cell above.  You see; I have to describe the function.  I don’t know what it is called.

It is like Auto-Fill in outlook when one starts typing the email address of someone in one’s contacts (or someone to whom previous messages have been sent).  I tried the Excel setting center, but couldn’t find anything that started with “Auto” that looked relevant.

I hope someone more experienced with Excel than I am (and that won’t take much) can point me in the right direction.

Of course, this could just be functionality lost from JAWS 16 into JAWS 17 or from Office 2013 from Office 2010.  It seems that both have gone backwards.  I’m using Windows 10 and, as I said, Office 2013 and JAWS 17.

Hi Ed,

This is AutoComplete, and you can turn it on and off in Excel Options. In Excel 2016, press Alt, F, T, DownArrow to Advanced, then Tab or press Alt + A until you're on "enable AutoComplete for cell values".

Hi Ed,

I don’t have a precise idea about this either, but I worked on an excel sheet on Friday with Excel 2010 and JAWS 17 and it was filling the cells. So I looked at my setting, and I have a possibility. Under Home in Cell Formatting there is a submenu called fill. I am not sure if that is it, but the option on my menu that said “down” was grayed out. And indeed my spreadsheet was auto filling the cells down as I typed.

Hope this is correct and helps!

Re: Why does not Skype close when I hit alt+F4?

Gudrun Brunot

Richard, I have the same issue. To be able to close skype, you need to make
its icon appear in the system tray. Then, you can go to the systray with
JAWS-f11, click on the skype icon and go to file, arrow up to quit.

So, you need to find the taskbar so you can hit customize it. I simply hit
control-escape and searched for "taskbar." The first entry was "taskbar and
start menu." Choose that and control-tab among start menu, toolbar, and
taskbar. When you're on taskbar, tab several times to customize and hit
enter. Here, you will find three items that you can arrow up and down among
to set whether you always want to show icons and notifications, turn system
icons on or off, or restore defaults. Then, tab several times past "help"
and you're coming to a list of all your icons. For each icon, there are 3
options that you arrow up and down to see: show icons and notifications;
hide icons and notifications; only show notifications. Tab to the next icon
and set its parameter. I had Skype set to show icons and notifications.
Then, it will be available to close from the system tray.

Hope it helps

Gudrun

Hi!

When I am in Skype, hitting alt+F4 does not seem *really* to close the
application. This is also true if I go to the Skype <file> menu and select
<close>. When I use alt+tab to move among applications, Skype remains in
that loop. So, how can I *really* close Skype?

Thanks,

Re: Why does not Skype close when I hit alt+F4?

Because Skype is composed of two separate parts, one is the user interface that you use when actively Skyping, the other part is a background process that constantly watches for the next incoming call or message, or you firing up the user interface to make a call or send a message.

Closing the user interface does that, and only that, and the Skype background process continues to run.

This architecture is not unique to Skype, either, though it's done for different reasons for different programs.  The Google Chrome browser is running in the background even when you've closed the browsing window entirely and have no active interaction with it.  Firefox does this as well.  The Google Hangouts app, which is not unlike Skype in intent, does this, too.

If you want to shut down the background process the only method of doing so is via the icon in the system tray if one exists (and it does for Skype).  Otherwise you have to go in to the Task manager and actually hunt down processes to kill, and I don't suggest that anyone do this unless they happen to know exactly what they're doing.

Re: Why does not Skype close when I hit alt+F4?

Hi Richard,

You can change a setting in Skype so that it at least disappears off your taskbar, this means it is still open and since Skype is meant to run in the background so you can receive messages and calls, it is designed not to close with Alt+F4.

If you want to set it up so Alt+F4 puts it in the background where you won’t come across it with Alt+Tab, open Skype, go to Tools (Alt+T) and arrow up to “Options”. You can also arrow down, but since options is the last item on this menu arrowing up gets you there a lot quicker. In options go to the “Advanced” tab, then tab I think 3 times and you hear “Keep Skype in the taskbar while I’m signed in”. This will be checked. If you press the spacebar to uncheck it, then tab to “Save” and activate it, Skype will disappear from your taskbar.

You will still have a Skype icon in the system tray although you may have to turn it on for it to be always visible when you go there with Jaws Key+F11. Here you can actually completely unload Skype, just bring up the systray, go to the Skype icon and press enter on it, then arrow up once which puts focus on “Quit” and press enter, you can also just press enter on the Skype icon and then press the letter “q” for quit and Skype will be completely closed/unloaded.

Lastly, I think if you have Doug Lee’s scripts pressing Alt+F4 twice quickly will close it completely.

Regards,

Sieghard

You have to change it in the preferences. If you want to close it the way that it is set up you can use the task manager, Control/Shift/Escape. Press S for Skype and then alt/E to close it.

Re: Skype for JAWS 18

Poppa Bear <heavens4real@...>

I solved the problem. I made sure that I installed the latest JAWS update and then I went and uninstalled Skype, downloaded the latest version from the site and now everything is back up. I made sure that I restarted my computer after uninstalling and reinstalling programs just to be on the safe side.  Also, now that I think about it, I haven’t used the D Lee scripts on the last 4 computers in my lab that I have put Skype on. Honestly the built in accessibility has worked just fine for me. Perhaps when I run into something that I can’t do with the built in accessibility then I will bawk and whine.

Re: shut down Windows 10?

Mario,

The -t parameter is followed by a number between 0 and 600 that says how many seconds are to elapse before the shutdown, with the other parameters specified, will begin.  The default with no -t parameter is 30 seconds.  Using "-t 0" means now, now, do it NOW!
