I'm looking for a decent programming setup to play around with using Jaws. I want something simple that can do basic things like loops, random numbers, and taking keyboard input and producing screen output. A good manual with a list of functions would be really helpful. I've used several different languages in the past, and don't remember any of them all that well, so I'm not particular. I've messed a little with python most recently and didn't care for its requirement of indents for if and loop and the like, so anything but Python, please. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Ann,
Wow, that is crazy. It seems like Office used to report colors in plain names, but now the option in the ribbon will often read the hex code number, which is not really helpful to me. I found that when I went to edit the file that was reporting Khaki1 as the cell color, I was later hearing cells as Grey 50. So confusing. Part of for me is that I work in high contrast and I wonder if that messes up the color reporting for JAWS. I cannot see that a cell is colored, but JAWS will report a background color, but maybe it's not reporting the correct one. Ugh.

Be aware that when you change a color in Office, the color JAWS reports when you are moving through the colors dialog is *not what it reports when the color is applied. I chose orange from the color grid, and when it was in a cell JAWS called it "antique white". "Dark Blue" became "slate grey".

I booted up my computer last night. I think some of you are right that there is some glitch.  I didn’t get the message, but Outlook wasn’t downloadiong my new messages as it should, and the Outlook icon on the system tray said it couldn’t connect to the network work something like that, even though my internet connection was fine. On the Send & Receive ribbon, I found a button for entering my password and updating the account, which brought up that annoying login screen. Entering my password, did get me in, but I couldn’t find any Remember Me checkbox on the dialog, despite hitting x for checkbox and tabbing around.  I’ll ask my sighted husband to look next time I get it.  I wonder if I should go change my password and see if that clears things up.  All my other email accounts in Outlook are logging in fine; it’s the primary account that is also my Microsoft Store login that prompts me for login.

I hate the way MS keeps messing up keyboard commands! I cant get to the app bar with the old method and cant seem to find a way to do it. but if you can get focus on the app bar then right click you can arrange windows in several ways. This makes all windows visible so drag and drop should work but as this is win 10 who knows.

You may need to reinstall your video card driver. press the windows key and type Device manager. Now in the device manager window tab once and arrow down to display adapters and right arrow to expand the category. now arrow to your video card and press the delete key. In the window that pops up check the box that says remove software and then click OK. Now restart your PC and windows will reinstall the correct drivers for you. then restart your PC and see if you still get the message. if so repair jaws and restart the PC again. if this doesn't work then FS is your only real option.

Thanks Glenn and Dan for your suggestions. Due to how the image was sized in the body of the email, the usual methods of running OCR on it didn't yield useful results. I even tried printing the email first to see if I could scan it the manual way but it was obvious after doing so that the words in the image were oversized and most were cut off. This explained why I struck out when attempting to print the email to the Freedom Import printer driver so that OpenBook could run OCR on it. Ultimately, I reverted to the best method. I contacted the original sender and asked her to attach the source Microsoft Word docx file which read great.

A couple of ideas,

Save the message as an EML file, the default choice for saving a message, and then run OCR on it after that.

Or try to do shift + applications on the open message and see if there is a save image available.

I'm running Fusion 2019 and would welcome any suggestions on how to get this OCR'd so I can read it.

Hi,

I would copy and save e-mail to a Word or similar document.  Then you can OCR the document with Fusion.  From the virtual viewer you can save the necessary text after the OCR.

If you simply want to move files from one folder to another, just open the folder with the files, go to the one you want or select multiple files which are next to each other by holding down shift and using the arrow keys, then press Control + X to cut, go to the other folder and press Control + V to paste.

If you have multiple files and they are not next to each other go to the first one, then hold down the control key and arrow down (best to use list view or details view so all the files are in a vertical list), then whenever you get to a file you want to select press the spacebar without letting go of the control key, then arrow down again to the next file. When done repeat the above, control + x to cut and control + v in the other folder to paste.

Drag and drop works on the Windows 10 taskbar very nicely if you want to change the order the icons there are in, but it does not work in all situations where maybe a sighted person can drag and drop with the mouse, but in most cases other keyboard shortcuts like cut and paste will do just the same.

Sometime early last fall I bought a license for Office 2016 for my home laptop.  All was find for several months. Then, after some update in the last, I’d say, 2 months, I now get this pop when launching Outlook that tells me to login.  I can’t recall the exact message.)   Using the password to my main email account and Microsoft store logs me in.  I cannot seem to bypass this login step.  Here are my issues or questions.

  • Does anyone else get this screen?
  • This login screen is having issues with JAWS 2019 and 2020.  If I enter forms mode to type my password, I can type the first character, then forms mode turns back off and I have to manually turn it off again to finish the password.  This is a consistent issue.
  • I’m also just annoyed at this new step and would love to disable it.  I’m not sure what I may have done to trigger it or if this was just an Office update.  I did notice this coincides with now seeing a Skype icon in my System Tray that says I’m logged in, even though I don’t use Skype.  I do not get this screen if I just launch Word or Excel, although I suppose it’s fair to say that I typically launch Outlook first, so maybe I need to go test this from a fresh restart of my computer.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi all,

I posted this once before, and I am doing it again, because hopefully someone may have a thought on how to resolve the problem. I have tried calling FS support twice and waited 30 minutes twice, and no one comes on the line to help.

Anyway here is the message. The freedom scientific audio display driver is not installed properly. To fix this problem,  reboot your computer if you have not done so already. If you have rebooted your computer and the problem still exists, run a repair on the jaws installation to repair the display driver. Go to the jaws set up package, and type argument jaws/repair.

I hope I got this correct. the message goes by so fast when I boot up, and I can’t get it to hold for me. It says the message and there is an ok button, and that’s it. Is there any way to resolve this? jim
