I think it might be the new “grace period authorization” thing in jaws2020. I think it is starting up too quickly for windows 10.

At the moment, it is authorized for 90 days using ilm. Would it make any difference if it was authorized using the internet? Would this slow down the startup enough? Is there any way to disable this new feature?

Hi,

I wasn't aware of this feature, but you could be right. Now that i think of
it, it started right after i installed the temporary authorization (90 days)
that i was given to try it out.
That could explain why 2018 works and 2020 doesn't. If it checks while
windows is loading, it could be a problem. When i stop and restart it, it is
fine, but then windows is fully up at that time.
Any way to disable/check/change this or something?

might that be the JAWS feature touted as new in either 2019 or 2020,
saying that JAWS will speak before checking your authorization, so
you don't have to wait so long to hear that it is running. However,
it doesn't do anything till it makes internal checks and decides what
context you are running in. So in my opinion it is a totally useless
change which FS calls an improvement.

It sounds like J2020 is set to start on the log-in screen. If
you're saying that there's no Jaws window when you, Alt + tab, you
probably have J2020 running from the system tray. To find the
settings for both these items press, Insert + J, to open the Jaws
context menu, press the letter, O, to open, Options, and press the
letter, B, to open, Basic. Now tab to Automatically start Jaws...

Hi Michelle,

Its just a standard windows 10 home edition laptop.

Windows boots up, and then at the sign-screen, jaws starts.

I have it set to always start for this user and to start at the log on screen.

Works for 2018, but 2020 starts very quickly after sign-in screen so no jaws window can be seen with insert+j or any other way.

Not knowing your system are you logging on to profiles on the computer? or can you log on to desktop direct?

I had to get Jaws 2020 to make sure it booted up at startup. Sometimes you may need to do this through your settings in windows. Force jaws to start up on login.

Good luck

While that works well mostly, there's a big annoyance that crops up (for me) every other once-in-a-while that has to do with shell scripts for configuring packages and programs that display their menus within pretty graphic borders. JAWS says line after line of things like "marlet {some number}, hollow-square this, filled square that," etc. These are all either high-value ASCII or Unicode charaqcters, qand they make reading these menus tedious. Is there any way to stop JAWS from reading these things without having to enter each and every character, of which there are many, into an exception dictionary?

Hi Michael, you didn’t say what version of Outlook you’re using, but I’ll bet it’s 365. If it is, this is the famous Jaws and Outlook sluggishness that some of us have to deal with on a regular basis. One thing, though: check in your System Tray and if there is an item that says Outlook is synchronizing folders, close Outlook and restart it. That might help. Best, Norma

It could be fine if it's just a "mode" -- but if we don't really know what it is exactly, being cautious about turning it on seems reasonable. It's not great accessibilitly practice to create a separate scheme for screen reader users. On some websites I've seen in the past (thankfully not too recently, I don't think) this even means a whole differetn set of webpages -- that'sa bad thing because who knows if they are updated/maintained with the diligence of the "normal" site?

Yes, but I'm not sure it's a problem. Usually if a website has a screen reader mode, I assume it's designed to make the site work better with a screen reader and enable it. I'd rather be told about the mode, because sometimes they also have extra help for using the website with a screen reader. I usually use NVDA, if that makes a difference. What problems does this cause for you? Would you rather it could autodetect your screen reader?

I have found it generally next to useless – more of a nag than truly functional.

My bank has this feature, but the site has evolved over time to be less and less accessible – making more use of frames and multiple tabs. It seems as if ‘screen reader mode” was a suggestion, but its actual development to be truly helpful has languished.

Well, this is an entirely idiosyncratic behavior.  I have never, in over a decade of tutoring JAWS, seen this occur.  I would hate it, too!

If you're using Windows 10 on that machine consider going to the step discussing SFC & DISM and starting there in Britechguy’s Standard Advice Regarding Windows 10 Issues and Their Repair
