Hi folks,

I have no idea how it happened. I don't know what I changed that fixed things, but I am now able to type in grade 2 braille using JFW and Thunderbird. Since I'm not sure what fixed things, I hope it doesn't revert on me.

moderated How Can I Copy a Link inside Zoom Chat with JAWS?

Dear Listers:

Every Sunday during an online Zoom meeting with people from church, the host puts a list of questions for us to consider when in breakout rooms.  The questions are in Googledocs, and the link to the questions is always inside Zoom chat.  I don’t know if there is a way that this list of questions in Googledocs can be copied from within the chat list and then opened up afterwards.  Have any of you ever been faced with this problem, and what did you do about it?

Hi, Don. Here is what the option on Smart Reading says:

Select this check box to have JAWS read the entire text unit, such as a compound word, telephone number, date, time, or math equation, when using the Say Word command. Note: Cursor movement is controlled by the application. So, if Microsoft Word's cursor normally navigates the entire text unit as one word or number, then the text is read in the same way. Likewise, if an application, such as WordPad, navigates through each component of the text unit, then JAWS will read it the same way. This check box is selected by default.

Alt-ctrl_5 reads the current cell, not the table.
Ctrl-Windows-comma reads the column.
Ctrl-windows-period reads the row.
Alt-ctrl and the arrow keys move from cell to cell--right, left, up, and down.
Alt-ctrl-end reads the last cell.
Alt-ctrl-home reads the first cell.
Alt-end reads the last cell in the row.
Alt-home reads the first cell in the row.

Hi, Stan. The JAWS feature for which you are searching is Mouse Echo. This is accomplished in the following way,

1. Press JAWS key plus SPACE, followed by the letter E.

Then perform one of the following commands.

The following commands are available in the Mouse Echo layer.
Toggle mouse echo On/Off = O.
Set mouse echo to character = C.
Set mouse echo to word = W.
Set mouse echo to line = L.
Set mouse echo to paragraph = P.

With J2020 and Magic running, as I pulled the mouse pointer over the text in a story panel, Jaws read the contents of that story panel. What enabled Jaws to read that text? There must be a way to enable Jaws to read the text with or without Magic.

Hello John,
I am using the Outlook app Office365 version installed on my computer
with JAWS2021 and it is working just fine using Focus40 braille
display fifth generation. I also tried it on my work computer and same
result.
At this point, I think that there may be an issue with your locally
installed copy of JAWS. Another way to test this is by first exiting
Outlook pressing insert space followed by z this will place you in the
JAWS default directory similar to how JAWS came from the factory. See
if Outlook is still causing an issue with your braille display once
you place JAWS in this mode this is a toggle so pressing insert space
z will take you back to how JAWS had been configured before.

Hi all. Just an observation. Have you verified that your Mantice is being
seen by the PC. Usually, when you install a braille display, you can see
the
info in your device manager. Have you checked there? Also, I'm wondering if
the Narrator braille is blocking your access to braille. If braille is

The other option is to try JAWS 18, or JAWS 19 as these versions of JAWS were written more closely to the date of the version of Excel you want to use. There have been significant changes to Outlook products to improve security and prevent rogue scripts from effecting your system, however this means that JAWS had to completely revanp their way they talk to Outlook products in the last few years.

Hello,
Are you attempting to get all information about a table in one shot? Perhaps you can give an example of a site you often visit that is public, and what you would like to review.
JAWS has smart table navigation and a dedicated table navigation mode along with features to change the table header information, from what is defined in the table. So JAWS can be very powerful with tables especially if you use a braille display.

Hi for people who are having issues with JAWS 2021 and virus software such
as Norton and Mcaffee, there is a solution to this problem!

Apparently, from what I'm reading in the thread, the virus programs are
treating JAWS like it's a Trojan ,malware or a virus. The software removes
JAWS.

Once they are removed, enable Windows defender and this should solve the
issue.

Hope this helps.

I just had a thought, are you in JAWS braille structured mode for Outlook? That’s one setting that I have missed in the past when setting up a braille display. Outlook doesn’t work well without it.

Good Luck! Take care and stay safe!

Debby

I’ve just connected an APH Mantis to my PC and it seems to work fine, except when in Outlook where thee Braille display stops working. It works fine in Word and Windows. I’m running JFW 2021 on Windows 10 version 2004.

There’s no Braille as I write this and none anywhere else in Outlook. If I Alt-Tab into Edge it starts working. Does anyone have a possible explanation or are  any other Mantis users experiencing this?

Hi,

Has anyone noticed with JAWS 2021, when you boot your computer, or you unload and reload JAWS, it says the word JAWS.

JAWS 2020 says JAWS home edition.

If you alt tab to the JAWS window, then it will say JAWS home edition.

Oh wow a little ridiculous. I honestly don't think they can tell because they pretty much look the same.

JAWS Professional is still a one user license, but Freedoms Scientific says we need to use the professional version if using it in a work setting. There isn't any functional difference, as there used to be in the distinction between Microsoft Office Home and Professional versions. Frankly, I think what it comes down to is a pricing structure. Freedom Scientific is making up part of their revenue from licenses purchased by companies and passing on a savings to personal users who likely don't have the financial resources of a company. That's my hunch. Sure, they can charge all users the same price, but it's a smart thing they are doing to charge less for home users. I'm not sure if they can really tell if someone is using a home license in a professional setting; I figure it is on the honor system and subject to audit, like the IRS auditing your taxes.

Oh wow, is that so that you can install it on more than three computers or what? Because with the subscription service, you can install it on up to three computers plus if you need to transfer to another computer you can do the exact same thing my dad and I couldn't figure out why I would need the professional version since they pretty much offer the same thing.

Milton, what I was suggesting below, was him speaking with his employer about getting the $90 subscription. Whether it had to be done through an administrator or himself.

Hello Listers,

RE: tele1974@gmail.com

He has been responded to and his situation will not be able to be solved by this list or tech support at Freedom Scientific. The individual works for a Federal Government Agency and the individual does not have Admin Rights so he cannot update the computer no matter if he was able to purchase a one year license to get the latest copy of JAWS and install it. The individual has to speak with his Supervisor and the IT Department to unlock the computer so that he has Admin Rights or get the IT Admin to work with him to resolve the problem he is having.

There is no need to respond to him or the list at this time.

Hello, I’m hoping someone has some help, I just received a windows 10 laptop through work, and we are running jaws 18. The issues I’m having are:
1, when hitting alt plus other keys, IE alt+a to go to my explorer favorites, or other similar commands, the command works maybe 25 percent of the time. Sometimes I have to repeatedly hit the command, and sometimes it just doesn’t work at all. I’ve not found this with previous versions of windows running jaws 18.

2, the other issue I have is that when I am typing into an edit field, such as a search field on a search engine, or in any other explorer based program, many of the characters I type are not entering into the box. It’s almost as if there is a lag of some kind. I will have to go back and add about half the characters I’ve typed back in, as only fragments of words show up in the box.
I’m hoping this makes sense and that someone may have some suggestions.
Thanks,
Kurt

Is there a way JAWS can alert you when a Facebook event goes live?  Every Wednesday morning a pastor I know puts on a live 5-minute prayer meeting on Facebook.  I can find where the live event will be by going to the church’s web site or to the church’s Facebook, but I cannot tell at what moment the event goes live and I usually wind up hearing the archived broadcast of it.  Is there a way JAWS can alert you when a Facebook event such as this goes live?  On this particular page when the live event is listed as starting at a particular time there is a button asking you if you want a reminder when the event goes live.  Does this work with JAWS?

The controls you want to access are buttons. Navigate buttons in a couple ways:

JAWS for Windows Navigation Quick Keys B and SHIFT-B

Display a list of buttons CTRL-JAWS KEY-B, select a button, and press ENTER

Here are the steps you need:

1.   Open the Facebook Home Page www.facebook.com

2.   Locate the “What’s on your mind” button and press SPACEBAR to activate it

The new post page opens.

1.   Navigate to the “More” button and press SPACEBAR to activate it

2.   This opens a small dialog with more buttons

3.   Navigate to the “Live Video” button and activate it with SPACEBAR

That opens the Live producer. This is where you can create a live video.

I am just learning to use jaws even though I have had it since the demise of Window Eyes. So far I would say that it is more difficult to get the info on a web page table than other screen readers I have used.

OK I have a web page that has a table I am trying to read. It says in the Jaws documentation that control alt numpad 5 is supposed to read the table info. I find it does not. All I want is to be read the entire table of info using Jaws 2021 on a Win 10 20h2 system with either Google chrome or Edge.
