Hello, everyone.

For some reason, Jaws has now suddenly started saying “list box item” at the beginning of each line of text in word documents that contain lists of bulleted items.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this anoying extra verbosity?

I have not changed any settings that I know of.  Am using Word 2016 in Office 365.

No, I am not concerned about this. Usually, by the time an
Office version is that old, they have gotten everything
right which they are going to correct. With Office365, not
everything works optimally yet. Therefore, they must release
updates to make JAWS and Office365 play nice with each
other.

Creating vb macros in object applications

Pablo Morales

Hi all,
I am trying to figure out how to place a control in an excel sheet when I am developing a vb macro. When we are working on vb, create and place a control is very easy, but I haven't been able to create or insert a control creating a macro in excel.
How a jaws user is able to drag a control to the design area?
Thanks in advance,

dragging controls in an object application

Pablo Morales

Hi guys,

How can I drag a control when I am creating a vb macro?

In VB or in VS, we can drag a control just placing it in the  application frame, and we can specify the coordinates later. But when we are creating macros in application objects I can’t find the way to place ore create a control.

Anybody has any idea of how to do this?

Thank you,

Hi all,

I am working with Excel, and I am trying to write a macro using vb for applications in Excel. For some reason the keystrokes that I use in VB are not working here, and Microsoft says that they should work in the same way because vb for applications is the same vb but just to work attach with the office platform. Anybody know if I need to enable something, or what I could be doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance for all,

Re: The all new Windows 10 S

Hi all,

A few answers (those on the Win10 forum on Groups.IO may have seen this before):

  • What is Windows 10 S: Windows 10 S (there is a whitespace between the words “10 and S”) is a feature-locked version of Windows 10 Pro designed for schools, students and others. The primary difference is that this version is locked to obtaining new apps from Windows Store. There are other changes, but the overall system is that of Windows 10 Pro with policies applied.
  • Can I run desktop apps on Windows 10 S: Yes and no. No because Windows 10 S restricts you to installing apps from Windows Store. Surprisingly, there are some desktop apps published on Windows Store that can be installed if and only if the app developer prepared the app as a hybrid app (more on that in a second).
  • Can I upgrade to a higher edition: Yes. Windows 10 S can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, and once upgraded, Windows 10 Pro can be upgraded to Enterprise or Education.
  • Can I change the default web browser and search engine: No. On Windows 10 S, Edge and Bing are default browser and search engine, respectively.
  • Is Narrator available on Windows 10 S: Yes.
  • Can I run third-party screen readers: it depends. If the screen reader has been converted to a universal app (or a hybrid app), then yes; however, due to technical limitations, existing screen readers cannot become a full universal app (or become a universal app at this time). The exception is if the user can run programs from USB flash drives, and in that case, yes, certain screen readers will run but cannot be installed.
  • What is a hybrid app: in the context of this discussion, a hybrid app is a universal app that started out as a desktop app. A programmer would use a tool called Desktop App Converter (formerly Project Centennial) to convert a desktop program to a universal app, which then can be posted on the Store for distribution. There are limitations, however: things that worked as a desktop app does not work well as a universal app, including deep modifications of the registry. Also, a hybrid app (or a desktop universal app) is limited to running on PC’s, whereas a full conversion is necessary (shedding desktop routines) before it can run on Windows 10 Mobile, HoloLens, Xbox One and other device categories.
  • What other changes are present in Windows 10 S: besides app installation restrictions and inability to change default web browser, Windows 10 S hides some privacy settings, locked to receiving updates via Current Branch for Business (CBB), hides web search portion of Cortana, removes Game Mode and other functions that are not needed by students. Also, Windows 10 S systems cannot join Windows Insider Program.

In short, for JAWS users, you should not use Windows 10 S unless schools are willing to perform workarounds. The biggest issue is JAWS portable copy and video intercept.

Cheers,

Joseph

I know this information is probably out there, but Joseph, could you summarize in a few lines or paragraphs exactly to whom this Windows 10S is targeted? I understand it’s a low-cost and stripped down version of Windows, is this correct? Also it seems you can run only Windows Store apps so does this mean you couldn’t run a full version of Office 2016 or desktop applications like Skype, iTunes etc.? How about Jaws or can you only use it with Narrator?

No.  Windows 10 S is no different than any other Edition of Windows 10, e.g., Home or Pro, in that you buy either it or a computer with it already preinstalled.  Editions don't ever "automatically switch" to any other edition.

I for one hate the captia stuff.  If and I do mean if there is an audio challenge, the audio sucks.  If there is a box to check saying I am not a robot I can’t seem to check the box.  I hate having to ask for sighted help but have no choice that I know of when this happens.

Re: Help with form field.

P.S.  While I did not go beyond the first screen for Gigabyte Passport Creation there is definitely a Captcha equivalent with the verification code at the bottom which looks like it may be one of their own invention or customization.  There is no audio button and nothing else that suggests that any method, including Webvisum, would be able to announce it (though I can't be sure of that and have to actually finish setting up the Webvisum add-on to test what happens there versus elsewhere.  If anyone happens to know of a good screen to shoot to for Captcha testing with Webvisum let me know.  I used to know one but have forgotten.)
