No, I am not concerned about this. Usually, by the time an
Office version is that old, they have gotten everything
right which they are going to correct. With Office365, not
everything works optimally yet. Therefore, they must release
updates to make JAWS and Office365 play nice with each
other.

HI ALL:

Is anyone concerned about a comment in VFO's Podcast
#139, in which it was stated that JAWS "MS OFFICE" updates
are specifically intended for "only" OFFICE 365, and not for
versions like, OFFICE 2013?

This clearly discriminates against those who prefer
to stick with a specific version of OFFICE; although, it is
"possibly" unintended. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks.

Creating vb macros in object applications

Pablo Morales

Hi all,
I am trying to figure out how to place a control in an excel sheet when I am developing a vb macro. When we are working on vb, create and place a control is very easy, but I haven't been able to create or insert a control creating a macro in excel.
How a jaws user is able to drag a control to the design area?
Thanks in advance,

dragging controls in an object application

Pablo Morales

Hi guys,

How can I drag a control when I am creating a vb macro?

In VB or in VS, we can drag a control just placing it in the  application frame, and we can specify the coordinates later. But when we are creating macros in application objects I can’t find the way to place ore create a control.

Anybody has any idea of how to do this?

Thank you,

Re: The all new Windows 10 S

Hi all,

A few answers (those on the Win10 forum on Groups.IO may have seen this before):

  • What is Windows 10 S: Windows 10 S (there is a whitespace between the words “10 and S”) is a feature-locked version of Windows 10 Pro designed for schools, students and others. The primary difference is that this version is locked to obtaining new apps from Windows Store. There are other changes, but the overall system is that of Windows 10 Pro with policies applied.
  • Can I run desktop apps on Windows 10 S: Yes and no. No because Windows 10 S restricts you to installing apps from Windows Store. Surprisingly, there are some desktop apps published on Windows Store that can be installed if and only if the app developer prepared the app as a hybrid app (more on that in a second).
  • Can I upgrade to a higher edition: Yes. Windows 10 S can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, and once upgraded, Windows 10 Pro can be upgraded to Enterprise or Education.
  • Can I change the default web browser and search engine: No. On Windows 10 S, Edge and Bing are default browser and search engine, respectively.
  • Is Narrator available on Windows 10 S: Yes.
  • Can I run third-party screen readers: it depends. If the screen reader has been converted to a universal app (or a hybrid app), then yes; however, due to technical limitations, existing screen readers cannot become a full universal app (or become a universal app at this time). The exception is if the user can run programs from USB flash drives, and in that case, yes, certain screen readers will run but cannot be installed.
  • What is a hybrid app: in the context of this discussion, a hybrid app is a universal app that started out as a desktop app. A programmer would use a tool called Desktop App Converter (formerly Project Centennial) to convert a desktop program to a universal app, which then can be posted on the Store for distribution. There are limitations, however: things that worked as a desktop app does not work well as a universal app, including deep modifications of the registry. Also, a hybrid app (or a desktop universal app) is limited to running on PC’s, whereas a full conversion is necessary (shedding desktop routines) before it can run on Windows 10 Mobile, HoloLens, Xbox One and other device categories.
  • What other changes are present in Windows 10 S: besides app installation restrictions and inability to change default web browser, Windows 10 S hides some privacy settings, locked to receiving updates via Current Branch for Business (CBB), hides web search portion of Cortana, removes Game Mode and other functions that are not needed by students. Also, Windows 10 S systems cannot join Windows Insider Program.

In short, for JAWS users, you should not use Windows 10 S unless schools are willing to perform workarounds. The biggest issue is JAWS portable copy and video intercept.

Cheers,

Joseph

I know this information is probably out there, but Joseph, could you summarize in a few lines or paragraphs exactly to whom this Windows 10S is targeted? I understand it’s a low-cost and stripped down version of Windows, is this correct? Also it seems you can run only Windows Store apps so does this mean you couldn’t run a full version of Office 2016 or desktop applications like Skype, iTunes etc.? How about Jaws or can you only use it with Narrator?

No.  Windows 10 S is no different than any other Edition of Windows 10, e.g., Home or Pro, in that you buy either it or a computer with it already preinstalled.  Editions don't ever "automatically switch" to any other edition.

Re: Help with form field.

P.S.  While I did not go beyond the first screen for Gigabyte Passport Creation there is definitely a Captcha equivalent with the verification code at the bottom which looks like it may be one of their own invention or customization.  There is no audio button and nothing else that suggests that any method, including Webvisum, would be able to announce it (though I can't be sure of that and have to actually finish setting up the Webvisum add-on to test what happens there versus elsewhere.  If anyone happens to know of a good screen to shoot to for Captcha testing with Webvisum let me know.  I used to know one but have forgotten.)

Re: Help with form field.

Sieghard,

I also just tried in Chrome and my experience is just like yours.  This has got to be one of the most stupidly designed support submission pages I've ever encountered, even for a sighted person.  When using NVDA, after the  country is selected from the menu button, when you land in the Name field it's announced as "Edit Blank" so you have no idea what it is you're editing that's blank.  Then when you tab to the email field it's announced as "Edit, Read Only, Blank" so, again, you have no idea what it is that you'd be editing and you can't really edit it (though I know the Edit is denoting an edit box).  Then I get one of those *&%$ed "overlay dialogs" that I have trouble interacting with via a screen reader for setting up a Gigabyte Passport, which means you do have to register, which you can actually do at this webpage:  https://passport.gigabyte.com/Apply.aspx   It appears to be far more accessible but I'd still think that you're going to have weirdness when you land on that e-mail field on the original page even if you already have a Gigabyte Passport because how would it know that?  You'll likely get the overlay pop up again, though I can't guarantee that.

Now I'm trying this in Firefox and the country choice is recognized as a combo box using Firefox, but was not under Chrome.  The name field is announced "Edit, has auto complete," and it will show my full name beneath as I start to type, once I'm in the e-mail read only edit box (which is announced edit, read only) I cannot get even the Gigabyte passport overlay dialog to come up no matter what I do.  Now, if I turn NVDA off, the moment I land in that field I get the Gigabyte Passport overlay dialog.

No matter how you slice it, this page is an abomination.  Why in heaven's name you'd present a field with the label "e-mail" which any sane person would believe is to be filled in with an e-mail address and then trigger what's being triggered is a mystery only their developers know.  It is, without a doubt, just plain stupid and, to my way of thinking, dishonest.   If you must have a Gigabyte Passport then set that field such that the label reads Gigabyte Passport ID (and code the darned thing such that this is announced) to cue the user about what they actually have to enter.  You could then have the standard link of the, "Don't have a Gigabyte Passport? Click here to create one," style that would gracefully allow you to create one as well as to continue to move through the support request.

This is an instance where I'd be calling their customer service and rattling as many cages as I can.  The following from their Customer Service page may prove helpful here:

                  email address:  services@...
phone:  (626) 854-9338, Option 4   Monday thru Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM Pacific time
