Thank you very much. My main concern is when typing the numbers from the keyboard. The reading is not a problem as much as I need to hear what I am typing. I don't want all numbers spoken this way, grin. This would have been a keyboard setting in Window-Eyes. I did find the setting for echoing words and I have that set, but will this result in echoing numbers as digits when being typed?

If it is set to echo words, the word will be spoken right after pressing the space bar, or a punctuation key.

As to setting numbers to be spoken as single digits, this setting is under JAWS Settings, INSERT plus six on the number row. Then navigate down to Text Processing, and change the setting to single digits, controlled by synthesizer. That should allow speaking of single digits.

I hope this helps you.

In Window-Eyes, it was possible to have words spoken after pressing
space or punctuation or the spacebar. It was also possible to have
each digit of a number spoken immediately when typed, such as 123
being echoed as 1 2 3. Is this possible with Jaws? Also, I read
earlier that someone had asked if there was a way to get Jaws to stop
saying alt tab. If that question was answered, I did not see a reply.
Of course, I have gone through over 300 email messages today, and it
is very possible I might have overlooked the reply. So, I am asking

Re: getting rid of annoying speech

Marquette, Ed <ed.marquette@...>

Not sure what is going on with the email problem.
For the pronunciation dictionary, however, the tool is very powerful, but that can sometimes be the problem.
Before changing the pronunciation of a word, be sure your cursor is on the first character of the word.
It may not be necessary, but I route the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor before invoking the pronunciation dictionary hotkey.
Then, press Jaws Key + d (for dictionary).
I usually have to tab a couple of times to get "add" into focus. Then, press SpaceBar.
Now the word whose pronunciation needs changing should be in an edit box.
Double-check it. I always ensure there are no trailing spaces, but I don't think that's necessary either.
Then, press tab to the edit box where you change the spelling of the word so it sounds right.
Then, usually, tab across to OK. Along the way, check to see that all the options are set correctly, including whether the pronunciation change is case sensitive. That should be off by default, but ...
Now comes the part I sometimes forget. Be sure to "save" the file.
Just to be certain, I always save twice -- when I remember.
Then, exit the pronunciation dictionary.
That usually works.

OK, I am back with a different issue, grin.

Every time I open an email, I hear things like x western or x Unicode.
When I arrow through the text, it is voiced, but there is nothing there. I assume this is some type of formatting indicator, but how can I make this go away?

With the same general idea, how do I change pronunciations for words that are incorrectly spoken with my synthesizer? I tried to make changes and it appeared I had done it, but when I went back to my document, the change did not take effect. I did choose global rather than application for the changes.

Thank you again. This is turning out to be a very informative group.

When I have my setting to characters, of course, it will do this, but I

type fast enough that I prefer to use words.  If I type something like

dv-12345, I don't hear the numbers until I press enter, space or

punctuation.

For some things, it is not a problem, but when editing numbers, I prefer

to make certain I am entering them correctly, so I prefer to press 1 and

hear 1 and then 2 , hear 2, etc.  I just went back and made another

couple of test changes.  There does not seem to be a way to do what I am

looking for.  Thank you, though, for being so helpful.  Doing these

things are a good way to learn what type of things are found in

Hi Don and Carol.

It is just the opposite for me. On a web page, I only have to press CTRL+F!

In a file, like even a note pad document, I have to press the Insert+CTRL+F. So Don, try it both ways. It is funny that it works one way for Carol and another way for me. If you only press CTRL+F in a word document, you activate the find dialog in Word instead of JAWS. To do the JAWS find in a Word Document, you have to press Insert+CTRL+F. You always press only CTRL+F on a web site.

Technical Support at Freedom Scientific walked me through the following.
I'm guessing you are talking about the Vocalizer Expressive 2 voices. They actually don't show up anywhere one would expect.
Go to the JAWS menu (JawsKey + J), then activate the "Options."
After that, go to the Voice Adjustment menu.
You will see some software synthesizers, including Eloquence.
You will have a Vocalizer Expressive Voice Installed. You probably already had one installed. So, it looks like nothing happened. Well, that may be true, but it probably is just the counterintuitive way Freedom Scientific set this up. I'm guessing you are looking for Susan, Allison, or one of the other voice persons. They are there; they are just hidden. Arrow down to the Vocalizer Expressive synthesizer. Then press Alt + V. You might have to tab once (I don't remember specifically, but you are not more than two tabs away after you hit Alt + V).
I think you can now arrow up and down to pick your voice, e.g., Susan or Alison. Arrow down to pick the voice you want to use (at least part of the time).
Then, DO THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OF ALL! Tab over, way over, until you come to a "Save As" prompt.
At that point save this "Person" as a synthesizer, e.g., SusanVoice or AlisonVoice.
Then hit apply and OK.
Now, when you do a voice adjustment, you will have synthesizers that match the name and settings for the "persons, e.g., SusanVoice."
By the way, you do this process EVEN if you downloaded the big files individually. Remember, the compressed voices all come in one file.
I'm guessing you downloaded the big files that are linked to the "person" names. That, in fact, is what fooled me.
I downloaded Susan, and I illogically thought I would find a file installed as Susan. NOT SO.
ALL the voices are tucked away in the Vocalizer Expressive menu.

I'm still using 16 (which may reduce the value of my input),
and have used it on 2010, 2013, and 2016.  The JAWS cursors
function like  mouse buttons, and allow you to go outside
the typing area, where angels sometimes fear to tread.

As for the learning curve,  take it as  you need it.  focus
on the basic tutorial, which will tell you everything  you
need to get started.  Learn fancy features as you need them.
It's a really slick program with good ergonomics, and runs
with a huge program library

When you need it,  you'll love the PDF functionality, which,
when combined with the recent PDF-friendly features in
Office, puts real power on your desktop.  Many, if not most,
offices use this versatile format, and it'll probably mean
you will not have to purchase the full-blown Acrobat
program, which will save either you or your employer a
nickel or two.

Hi Shannon!  JAWS offers a lot of helpful training materials
that are free.  To locate these, navigate to the JAWS Window
by pressing either Alt Tab or Insert plus the letter J.
Insert is also the 0 key on the number pad on a regular
desktop keyboard, provided that your num lock setting is set
to off.  Once you are there, press Alt plus the letter H to
bring up the help menu.  Then you can use the arrow keys to
find the training option.  Press enter to open this menu.
You should land in a table of contents for all of the
training materials.  Depending on how JAWS was installed on
your system, you can either select the particular module you
are wanting to read, or download it.  You can use the arrow
keys to navigate through the page, and find all of the
choices.  I hope this is helpful for you.  Good luck!  I
know that being a new JAWS user can be very overwhelming at
first.  I was there and I haven't forgotten how confusing it
was for me.  I urge you to go through these training
modules.  They will be very helpful to you.  They are guided
as well with audio to listen to, if you don't want to read
the information.

Subject: New user here; JAWs questions and concerns

Good morning,

I am a potential new user of JAWS. I would be one of many
conversions from WindowEyes.

I have downloaded the trial of JAWS 18 and pretty concerned
about what it can and cannot do.

I know that there is a large learning curve I will have to
go through, and that is only one of my concerns.

I have been reading the list for the last few days and a few
things mentioned by others concern me.

I also use here at work Office 2010, Outlook, Word and Excel
all the time.

I saw a mention of excel not working well with JAWS? Is that
true? That would be a deal breaker for me.

I use spread sheets every single day to do my job. I also
use on a daily basis the MS Query feature. Will JAWS handle
the queries?

I make mail merge documents frequently and they tie to the
MS Databases.

Will Jaws work with outlook 2010? I have over 10 different
email profiles set up and I need access to them.

Does JAWS have a way to search the screen for text or
buttons to be clicked by the mouse or a "HotSpot" feature as
WE did/does? I use that feature everyday along with custom
scripts to get access to the time keeping software programs.

The language in the control panel seams so foreign to me. I
can't tell, but it seems as if Jaws acknowledges 4 kinds of
cursers? A virtual curser, a JAWS curser, PC Curser, and
something called Mouse overlay?

Is the Jaws curser the mouse? What is the Mouse overlay? Can
I read the screen with the mouse?

Since I am new and don't know how it works and how to
configure it I can't tell what I can and can't do.

I can tell that many functions of the accounting program,
and the three programs that are involved in time tracking do
not behave well and most likely are going to require special
custom scripts.

Before I spend a lot of money and time I want to know if
Jaws can even do the little stuff like Office and surfing
the web?

If JAWS doesn't like Office 2010 what version does it like?

Thanks for your time.

Shannon
