High performance all in one computers and JAWS

Kimberly Johnson

I’m a long-time JAWS user, though certainly not an expert or programmer. I am totally blind. I need to upgrade both JAWS (currently running version 16 on Windows 8 computers) and get a new computer. When I last got new computers I avoided the touch screen by customizing both a desktop and a laptop. I am looking for information on how JAWS is doing with these PCs with touch screens, does it work at all? If not, can they be disabled?  And how much sighted assistance I might need out of the box with a new PC to get things up and running?

I’m not sure what kind of computer I’m going to get; I’m shopping now, but it will be a high performance, capacity computer. I’m a professional who probably uses my computer about 12 hours per day, or more. In addition to the usual entertainment purposes, I use MS Office continuously, Online learning management software, and I analyze data using large datasets in SAS, STATA or SPSS (depending upon what features of accessibility and computing I need at the time). In other words, I tend to melt down or crash your average computer with the specks generally recommended for JAWS users within 3 months, so I tend to go way up scale with a better processer and large amounts of memory. However, I’ve found with high performance computers out of the box I have difficulties with JAWS; for example they are set up for surround sound or have some kind of screen setting and JAWS will not work until I can find a sighted person to customize the sound or other settings for me.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a high performance computer that will work well with JAWS? Any suggestions on where I can get quick, useful, information about how JAWS is performing with all-in-one touch screen enabled computers?

Just to prevent future frustration: The first word on "tutor message
voice" is spelled t u d o r, not t o o t e r, as in toot toot. More
like "My child was struggling in math, so we got him a tutor."
Spelling this correctly will assist you or others on the list as you

Shannon, you can turn off the tutor messages by:

press insert+j to get the JAWS window.
press alt. press enter on the options menu to open it.
press enter on the basics submenu.
now you should be on "Tutor Messages".
press the down or up arrow keys to choose "Turn off Menu and Control
Help radio button checked".
press the tab key to the ok button and press the spacebar to save the
change.

Kane,
You are right. Smile I was not paying attention and was too excited to have found the answer.
It is the tutor message voice.
Now to find out exactly what this thing is telling me, and if other voices/cursers can reach the same information as well.

Hi all,

I use spread sheets every single day.

I have opened an excel sheet and when I am arrowing through it I am
hearing things that are just…. Yucky!

1 there is this annoying voice that speaks the
cell coordinates.

I have futzed around with the voices so what I don’t know is which
one of the voices is doing this. It is the same one that says the
status of a message in Outlook un-read, forwarded and replied. And
gives the erroneous indexes of the messages. (for some reason it always
gives x of 44.)

2 I don’t like hearing the contents and then the
cell coordinates after.

I want to reverse the order. How can I do that?

3 How to make the entire first row column headers and have it
only report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay
in the same column.

Thanks

Shannon

I haven't seen the HR side of this program, but if it's anything like the potential employee side, you should have no problem. The parts of the platform I've had experience with are web-based and very accessible.

Re: Jaws at startup

James Homuth

I don't think you'll do any harm by leaving JAWS in MSConfig. If memory
serves, I'm pretty sure Windows puts every program in there whether it needs
to be there or not. Because JAWS starts as a service when you set it to
start automatically, I actually wonder if in that case it doesn't bypass
MSConfig altogether anyway. Of course I've not tested that theory, so your
milage may vary.

Mario,

I found it!!!

The curser/voice that is saying that stuff like the Un-read, forwarded, replied and the cell coordinates is the Tooter Message voice.
Funny I thought I had turned that off but... obviously I didn't.
Being set to a different voice is choppy, at best.
I'll try to change it to match the PC curser voice and see if that gets smoother.

Can you turn it off? If you do What else do you lose?

I want to hear the coordinates before the contents and the only choices are contents no coordinates or contents with coordinates.

Unless this is a separate verbosity setting?

Mario,
I have fiddled around with all of the voices. I don't remember which curser voiceI assigned to what?. I also can't remember how to change it.
I thought some of you users would know which curser voice says what?
Maybe I should go back to factory defaults? But I don't know how to do that unless I uninstall and reinstall. But if I do that don't I have a problem with licensing?
All of your cursers use the same voice? JAWS is a bit confusing with all the cursers.
