Older versions of JAWS used to have that option. I forget when that changed,
exactly, but I think around version 6 or 7. there also used to not be a way
to turn that off. My solution to that problem: I turned JAWS off long enough
to enter my passwords. Why? Because letting JAWS read your passwords to you,
especially if you're one of the folks who prefer to use JAWS without a
headset, is only slightly less insecure than the ability to read your
password on the screen as you type - which, just for the record, any website
worth dealing with will not give you the option of doing. If you need JAWS
to tell you your password as you're entering it in, my suggestion would be
to get a better password, or invest in one of the way too many password
management apps floating about.

On very few occasions I see a password field where there is a "Show" button
or something along those lines which if you click it will then reveal the
password. But most password fields don't have it for obvious security
reasons and in those cases you can't make the password visible or make it so
you hear the characters instead of "star". If you aren't confident enough to
type without the feedback or if another physical problem prevents you from
doing so then what you describe is probably the best solution, type the
password in Notepad and copy and paste it. As an alternative you could use a
password manager which would fill the user name and password field for you
once a password has been saved, but here you still have to enter a master
password to unlock the saved password. Only thing is that the master
password is the same for all passwords and at least with Roboform you can
specify a time interval during which the passwords stay unlocked, e.g. if
you set it to 3 hours then for 3 hours after you enter the master password
you wouldn't have to enter it again. I assume other password managers have a
similar feature, but I can't be sure since I have only ever used Roboform.

Maybe you can ask VFO to add this feature to Jaws as they obviously have the code from Window Eyes. If they get enough feedback they may include the best of window eyes into jaws and give us a better screen reader... I can hope. :)

Re: witchcraft with jaws

Hi Pablo,

Thanks for the glowing review of the Pixel, I just wonder if it is so fast why all the benchmark and real world tests show that the iPhone 7 blows it out of the water with just about any test they can throw at it and that is even though the Pixel has 4 Gb of RAM compared to the 3 Gb of the iPhone 7.

Here is just one article with a Youtube demo link, I have seen many others pointing in the same direction but have not found any which say the Pixel is faster although I’m sure they exist:

In a new speed test pitting the mighty iPhone 7 Plus against Google’s handset, the Pixel XL gets absolutely stomped, despite having more RAM and the latest SnapDragon 821 processor.

To see how fast the two phones perform in real-life scenarios, PhoneBuff made the Pixel XL and iPhone 7 Plus open a number of apps, then went back through and reopened the apps.

Pixel XL managed to open a couple of apps slightly faster than the iPhone 7 Plus, but Apple’s device was much faster overall. It nearly lapped the Pixel XL by opening all the apps twice in just 1:55, while the Pixel XL barely finished opening the first round of apps in 1:47.

To make matters worse, the Pixel XL isn’t much faster than the Galaxy Note 7 that Samsung had to recall.

Some evidence indicates Google may have spent only nine months developing the Pixel XL. If true, that lightning-fast development cycle might explain why the device’s memory management and speed is so bad. And why Apple’s software and hardware integration is so underrated.

Watch the iPhone 7 kill the Pixel XL:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na0JRDMAoKM

Anyhow, as opposed to you I like the iPhone for exactly the reason why you don’t like it, it’s a carefully controlled eco system which is highly secure as opposed to Android. Incidently this is one of the main reasons why most large companies and the government use iPhones, a long time ago they had the Blackberry but we all know where that went. Sorry, Pablo, I can do all I want to do and more with my iPhone and I’m rarely even interested in trying out an Android just as I’m perfectly happy with my PC and have no interest in switching to or trying out a Mac. Of course cost is not an argument for the Pixel either since it is just as expensive as an iPhone.

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

Well, it is a short solution until creator fix some issues. Microsoft always has been more efficient  fixing bugs than apple because Microsoft has very good business with the US government. Most platforms today in the federal agencies and state offices are running windows, so Microsoft will not play with the Local or Federal government. They have contracts that are very expensive for Microsoft if they don’t work well. More over the comparison with Apple and Microsoft is not fair. Microsoft allow me to install whatever software I want. Microsoft guys allow me to run Narrator, or NVDA, or Jaws, or whatever screen reader I want. It doesn’t need to be from the Microsoft store. Now let us compare with Apple and their closed software policies. This and many other reasons are who made me return my iPhone 7, and now be very happy with my Pixel. You should try it, you will love it. The Pixel speed, wow, a lot better than iPhone. Accessibility on apps on both platforms, wow you will be surprised. You should get a Pixel phone.

Just try it.

Hi Pablo,

Not sure how to fix your issue with Jaws, but one comment regarding Creator’s Update. You said you downgraded which is a short-term solution only. I kow you may not like this because you always bash Apple for forcing people to upgrade, but there will come a point when Microsoft will push this update to you and you won’t have a choice. I think instead of downgrading backing up your data (which is something everybody shold do anyways) and reinstalling Windows and then Jaws and your applications would have been the better solution and one which should have fixed any issues. Just my two cents worth.

Hi all,

I have a weird situation with jaws 18. It is the problem. I  started getting some problems after I installed windows creator, so I downgraded it to the previous version of windows 10. Well, I had to reinstall office and everything was working well, but jaws continued crashing. So  I uninstalled jaws, but after I restarted my computer when the windows installer finishing removing jaws, jaws continue talking. I  went to check the list of programs installed, and there wasn’t jaws. However I used jaws to do all these tasks. So, obviously windows installer, the register and windows are not communicating very well. How can I fix my jaws when my computer doesn’t know that is installed?

Thanks for all,

Re: installing JAWS problem

Hi Bill,

I actually have never come across this setting before Creator's Update which of course doesn't mean it wasn't there. Anyhow, if you already have Creator's Update you simply go to Settings > Apps > App and Features (the first/default tab).
Tab once and you hear the following:
Choose where you can get apps from. Installing only apps from the Store helps protect your PC and keep it running smoothly.
Combo box Allow apps from anywhere
I guess if you didn't have it set to allow apps from anywhere it would say most likely "Allow apps from the Store only" and there is one more setting "Warn me before installing apps from outside the Store".
This is a combo box and you have to press Alt+Down Arrow to open it, then arrow to the selection you want and make it stick by pressing enter or Alt+Up Arrow, after that you can close Settings with Alt+F4, there is no Apply or OK button..

Though I am still a new Jaws user, you may wish to go to the braille and synthesiser settings through the main menu.

Press your hot keys to start Jaws usually insert plus control pus letter j on your desk top.

Press insert plus j to bring Jaws into focus.

Press alt plus o for the options menu. Press  alt to arrow through the different menus.

Tip, I found the on board help very helpful. You may wish to install the fs reader for tutorials.

let us compare with Apple and their closed software
policies. This and many other reasons are who made me return
my iPhone 7, and now be very happy with my Pixel. You should
try it, you will love it. The Pixel speed, wow, a lot better
than iPhone. Accessibility on apps on both platforms, wow
you will be surprised. You should get a Pixel phone.

Just try it.

Hi Pablo,

Not sure how to fix your issue with Jaws, but one comment
regarding Creator's Update. You said you downgraded which is
a short-term solution only. I kow you may not like this
because you always bash Apple for forcing people to upgrade,
but there will come a point when Microsoft will push this
update to you and you won't have a choice. I think instead
of downgrading backing up your data (which is something
everybody shold do anyways) and reinstalling Windows and
then Jaws and your applications would have been the better
solution and one which should have fixed any issues. Just my
two cents worth.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi all,

I have a weird situation with jaws 18. It is the problem. I
started getting some problems after I installed windows
creator, so I downgraded it to the previous version of
windows 10. Well, I had to reinstall office and everything
was working well, but jaws continued crashing. So I
uninstalled jaws, but after I restarted my computer when the
windows installer finishing removing jaws, jaws continue
talking. I went to check the list of programs installed,
and there wasn't jaws. However I used jaws to do all these
tasks. So, obviously windows installer, the register and
windows are not communicating very well. How can I fix my
jaws when my computer doesn't know that is installed?

Thanks for all,

This and many other reasons are who made me return my iPhone 7, and now be very happy with my Pixel. installing JAWS problem

Don H

I downloaded the latest 64 bit version of JAWS. When I try to install it a dialog box pops up with a button to download aps from the aps store and a link to settings. Jaws does not install. I did have JAWS installed a while back and did uninstall it but this appears to me that it thinks jaws is still installed. Any solution to this issue?
Thanks

netbat66

can password fields be changed so i can hear what i type in?
if i can't i would have to type them in notepad and paste them into the fields.
