Subject: Problem Advancing Beyond First Page Of PDF Articles

Hello, everyone.

I am having a problem reading a few PDF articles I have just been sent.

Once I open the attachments, via Adobe Acrobat DC, I find that I cannot advance beyond the first page of each article, either via the arrow keys, or the page up and page down keys.

Interestingly, when I use my arrow keys and the page up or down keys, the visual sscreen advances with no problem.  In other words, Jaws appears to be  stuck on the first page and is unable to advance through the rest of the file.

I’m using Windows 7 and the latest build of Jaws 18 here, along with Adobe Acrobat DC.

Any suggestions would be apreciated.

Mario,

Again, I cannot answer that question because use of the
download manager is typically something that gets set in the browser
itself. I do not use them though I will occasionally call up the
download manager after I've finished downloading something.

You seem to have IE configured such that when a download is
requested it automatically opens the download manager. I have not used
Internet Explorer in years so I cannot tell you where to look in
settings for this.

How do you repair Jaws? I assume you just run the installer package again and at some point it offers a repair versus reinstall. Does a repair reset all your settings?

Help! I'm running Windows 7 and JAWS 18. Suddenly my "Documents" has inverted--instead of running from the A's to the Z's, they list from the Z's to the A's. It's not a big deal, but I'm not used to it and would really like to get it back where it was. have no idea what made it reverse.
Not sure if this is a JAWS issue or not, but I'd be grateful if someone could tell me how to fix it since I'll need to use JAWS to do it.

Thank you in advance.

Well, "sexy" is in the ear of the beholder, that's for sure.

I've found some of the "foreign" (for the United States) accented voices on
Garmin, particularly one of the British female and Australian male, voices
to be rather mellifluous and somewhat sexy. Everyone's mileage will, of
course, vary,

I don't find, for instance, the SAPI voice "Microsoft David" that I use with
NVDA "sexy" but I do find it, in many instances, particularly when it's
reading through something at beyond the letter or word levels to be
remarkably lifelike in most instances.

Not knowing the synthesizers that various people are using it's impossible
to suggest generic ways to search for a "sexy" voice for them, but I'd be
willing to bet that someone has created them, even if they're not
commercially available, but it's a matter of finding them.
Inflection, breathiness (or lack thereof), and vowel duration are a lot of
what get's tagged as "sexy" when you think about voices in real people that
are described as sexy. These are parameters that it's possible to control
in a speech synthesizer.

It would be an absolute riot to create a "femme fatale" or the male
counterpart thereof synthesized voices for use with anything, screen reader
or not. I don't think that anyone would use the most "over the top"
versions for any period of time, but they could make for great entertainment
value over a short term.

I used Betty, the best of  the female choices.  I agree with a  recent commenter.  Many of these voices might be useful if your voicing cartoon characters, but they’re good for little else.  The original Shelly (circa 1997) sounded like Marge Simpson, and who in the world would want to listen to that day in and day out?

There are some very "sexy" sounding voices available for speech synthesis that sound virtually human.  This is particularly so on GPS devices, and some of these voices are a hoot (unless someone is easily offended by directions being given in very suggestive, as opposed to demanding, tones).

Subject: Re: Accessible Software

I use Sage 50 as my accounting software but was under the impression that
Quickbooks is rather dedicated to improving accessibility and that with the
scripts the desktop version is very accessible. I have tried Quickbooks
Online and it still needs some work, but I understand better accessibility
is coming there as well.

Sieghard

For quickbooks you need the scripts at myblindspot.org to use. There are
screens which even with those scripts, qb is hard/not usable.

That is true, but I am glad to know that there is a Windows keyboard command too.

Bye for now,

If you just want to know the time simply press Jaws Key+F12, press it twice quickly and it gives you the date.

Hi Don,

The only thing my insert-f11 didn't read was the clock. I have four
other items and it read all of them.

The help file regarding Jaws keystrokes says that either Jaws key
F11 or control shift F11 is supposed to read all the items in the

a list of two items when in fact in my case there is eight items in
the system tray.
How often does FS check to see if their keystrokes really work?

Sometimes, when I encounter this problem, I perform a select all command (Control-A) to select all the text in the PDF document and then copy and paste it into Notepad.  Most of the time, I can then read the entire document using the arroe keys.

I’ve seen that occasionally.  Can you import or open them in Word?  That should be possible.  Right clicking on the document should give you the option to open in Word.

The first date on that page reads "May 24, 2017" for me.

If you go to the Bard web site
https://nlsbard.loc.gov/nlsbardprod/login/mainpage/NLS

and sign in and then go to the recently added books you will see this
problem. Once on the recently added books hit the headings hot key H
and you will get on a date. At least on my system it reads as I described.
