Shirley,

If you want to use it for Open Book, you’ll want to be sure you know which drivers it uses and what OpenBook requires.  I use Kurzweil 1000 and the scanner must run with TWAIN drivers to work.  My HP all in one printer cannot be set to work with Kurzweil.  I have an Epson desktop scanner at work that has TWAIN drivers.  This is food for thought, as I don’t know if Open Book also requires TWAIN drivers or if the scanner can have other drivers.  Also, maybe the person who suggested the Brother scanner is already clued into this aspect.  We just bought an Epson all-in-one printer that looks pretty simple, but we havent’ set it up, so I cannot tell you how easy it is to use yet. The reason we picked this one, over staying with HP, is that it has larger ink reservoirs that are supposed to e much cheaper to maintain.  We bought it at Staples and also bought the warranty/support option so we can have telephone support of any setup or maintenance issues for the next 4 or 5 years.   I once had a simple HP black and white laser printer that I loved. If I were doing a lot of printing, I’d go that route again, but this new printer purchase is for the family and needed more bells and whistles.

We like the Brother brand of printers and some are all in ones, that are also WiFi enabled and even AirPrint enabled if you have an iPhone or iPad.

I don’t have a specific model to recommend, just know you will likely need sighted help to set it up.

I would suggest that you purchase a laser printer. Unlike an ink jet the nozzles do not clog since it uses a different Process. A black and white model costs about as much as an ink jet if you do not need color.

Good morning list,

My printer has finally given up. Can anyone please give me a suggestion of an easy-to-use  printer and scanner that works well with JAWS? I also need one that will work well with Open Book—although I don’t normally scan large batches and don’t need one that has that ability. I’m using a DEL Computer with JAWS 2020, latest update, and Windows 10. My computer doesn’t have BlueTooth, so I don’t need that in a printer.

Thankfully, I know someone who is willing to install it for me. I do well to use it, much less understand how it works or how to set it up. 😒

Thanks for any help.

I think that the safe mode feature did a registry hack to get the
sound driver into safe mode, so maybe you could find that hack and and
maybe Jaws would work in safe mode after all.

Not to mention a lot of the developers who use to work on Window-eyes are now working on Jaws.

Sorry I saw the comment about Freedom Scientific pushing Windows-eyes out of the market.  But wanted to point out that Freedom and the vendor of Window-eyes murged. Which is kind of like saying Freedom purchased the Window-eyes vendor.  Anyways, its expensive to run 2 development groups and so after a year or so Freedom stop development on Window-eyes, but many of the ideas in Window-eyes are being incorporated into Jaws.

Not to mention a lot of the developers who use to work on Window-eyes are now working on Jaws.

Have a good day everyone.

It has a lot to do with them wanting you to use their products on their platforms. It’s sad but it’s across-the-board kind of the same way that Freedom Scientific pushed window wise out of the market.

Mark, if not already responded, the keystroke is insert+f1. hope this is what you're looking for.

Is there a command or script that would make JAWS describe the contents
of a region?  For example, it might say that the main region has 3
headings, 4 lists, 10 links, and so on. It could save time from figuring
it out more manually.

Knowing how Apple is about their stuff, could it be that they won’t work with FS to create JAWS scripts for iCloud or iTunes?  These are 2 pretty big main stream programs, and it is a little surprising at the lack of outcry for better accessibility.  I can get iTunes to work, although it is clunky, but iCloud is useless to me.

When quick keys is enabled in JAWS you can press S to move to the next section and shift-s to move to the previous section.

Pressing insert-z toggles Quick Keys on and off.

Two thoughts.

First, the symbol marking a new section is ^k. Type these two characters into an MS Word search ()control-f), not a JAWS search (JAWS key-control-f) and press enter. You should be taken to the beginning of a new section. For the record, I haven't tried it because I don't divide documents this way.

Second, there may be another symbol to use when you go into quick navigation mode with JAWS key-z. In this mode, pressing h will take you to the next heading, etc. I haven't looked into whether there's such a symbol for sections.

Subject: Moving Between Se`ctions in a Word Document

Hi, Everyone.
Using JFW2018 and Word2016 with Win10. I have a large document with multiple sections that I need to look through. When I do an Ins+F1 JFW tells me what section I'm on and describes its margins; it also tells me how many sections my document has. But it seems there is no keystroke to move between sections. Is that right?

Thanks,
Dani

It sounds like you somehow got to the ad-ons page.  You should be able to hit ctrl-l and type in whatever url you want to go to.  The only real setup is whether you want to set as default and turn on rewards.  That is what first came up when i installed it, and I just hit close.  If you want to import bookmarks or do any of that stuff, it should be in the menus.
