Re: Help With Setting Up Microsoft Edge
Dear Brian:
You have been more helpful to me than words can express—and in more ways than one. You finally gave me the tips for Google Calendar I needed, and now you have
helped me with Microsoft Edge. No, I had not read the tutorial. Silly me!
I have one more question that I am not sure of. What does it mean to sync? I am getting an alert saying that Edge is not synced. What does that mean?

Rick,
Did you even bother to read the tutorial I offered earlier? It certainly appears not.
What you are calling a home page (and, admittedly, was once called a home page) has not been called such in Chromium browsers (including Chrome) for a very long time now. It's your startup page (or collection of pages), set in the On Startup tab.
All of this is explained, in great detail, in what I previously offered, and give the direct link to again here: https://win10.groups.io/g/win10/message/41525
Your question was answered.

Re: Help With Setting Up Microsoft Edge
Dear Brian:
When I had Chrome as my default browser, the minute I opened it my home page would pop up right away. When I get into Microsoft Edge I find it doesn’t. Instead,
the address bar pops up. I got into Settings, found Appearance in the Treeview, checked the Show Home page button. I indicated I wanted Facebook to be my home page and saved the Setting, but Facebook is not popping up when I start up Edge after having closed
it out.

Interesting. I never run practically any program with the screen other than maximized. I'll have things like File Explorer or Search Everything not maximized, but web browsers are always maximized.
When I did a "restore down" it did cause a "hamburger stack" menu button to appear so that you can get to the other tabs besides profile.
What's even more interesting is this behavior is not present in Edge Dev build, which is what I generally use. All Settings tabs stay visible even when not maximized. I wonder if the behavior is going to be changing in production Edge in the coming months?

Who is they? We had such a program a few years ago and the CNIB at least in BC were not allowed to do any assessments. I was informed why by a government worker directly involved in determining who
got what, but will not mention it on this group.
David, I don’t know if the assistive devices program is across Canada. It is definitely in Ontario.
Every five years you can get a computer assessment done at the CNIB.
I get my computer assessment done at the University of Waterloo just because I like them and I’ve been going to them since I was a kid.
Once you get your assessment done, they give you some forms to sign, you send these forms off to the assistive devices program, they return them to you with approval, you buy your computer, you send them the receipt, and they refund you
the money.
The program is not as good as it used to be but it still exists.
You are entitled to a computer and jaws every five years.
They can also provide you with a list of assistive devices program vendors. You can take your forms to one of these vendors and they will handle everything for you. Meaning you don’t have to buy anything and wait for a refund. They will
take your forms and give you your computer and jaws, and you’re done.

I am also in Canada, and recently had to deal with this issue. You do not have to buy a new version of jaws you can upgrade. It is cheaper to upgrade then to buy the new version. If you are on jaws 18 and want to upgrade to jaws 21 and
you bypass the upgrades to jaws 19 and jaws 20 then yes you will have to purchase A whole new version which costs $1030 Canadian. If you want to upgrade you can upgrade to 2019 2020, 2021, and have a license for 2022 to upgrade for $480 Canadian plus taxes
if you are not registered with the CNIB. If you’re registered with CNIB you will not have to pay taxes.

I am new to Microsoft Edge. I found the page to show my home page and set it, but my home page is not popping up after I close the browser and turn it on again.
Also, and significantly, I cannot find the cookie settings. When I get into the Settings and More menu I arrow down to settings and press the Enter key, go through all the settings, but I see nothing for privacy or for anything that will
help me control my cookie settings. Is there a good Semaritan out there who knows Jesus Christ as Savior and who would be able to help me the way Jesus would?

The thing is too, even if it was available in Canada there is the exchange rate. There was a program on using word press on a SD card. The cost for it was $119. By the time the currency exchange
rate kicked in, it was close to $159.

Hello,
I admit I don’t know how JAWS purchase works in Canada, but in the US, if you fall behind several years in purchasing upgrades as you have, it is preferable to buy annual licenses instead. Last I checked this
was $90 US. Much cheaper than an initial outlay of over $400 to get yourself up to date. I would assume, but do not know, that the annual license option is available in Canada.
Hope this helps,
David

Re: Reading Google Group Messages with JAWS
Well, just like all of Google's web applications you can view all the keyboard shortcuts with typing ? while in the PC cursor So, in JAWS type insert Z to turn off VPC and then press ?. If Google Groups works the same as Gmail and I believe it does, you can use J and K to move to previous or next conversation, press O to open a conversation, and n and p to have individualmessages read.

Re: upgrading Jaws
As an aside, unless you have a very old computer, at this point it's almost certain that you have a 64-bit version of Windows. Microsoft has not supplied 32-bit Windows to computer manufacturers for over 20 years now since even the processors in low end laptops or desktops have been 32-bit chips. Microsoft has announced a "drop dead" date for 32-bit support, but I cannot recall what that is at the moment, and don't really care since even my ancient Gateway desktop with an Intel Core processor is a 64-bit machine, and it's around 20 years old. Under Windows 10, and I'd imagine Windows 8, if you look in Settings, System, About in the Device Specifications section there is an entry for System Type which will tell you the bit-depth of both Windows and your computer hardware. In the case of my machine, that entry reads: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor --

The easiest is to press the Windows Key plus r for Run and type c:\ (that’s c colon backslash.)
Then, first letter navigation will get you to the info you want, so press p until you hear the program files folder or folders.

How do I get to that drive?
I think the easiest way to find out if you have 32 bit or 64 bit Windows is to open up your main drive with your Program Files folder - this is normally called local drive C:
On that drive look to see if you have more than one Program Files folder.
If you only have the single Program Files then you have 32 bit Windows.
If however you have 2 folders, the first called Program Files and the second called Program Files 86 you have 64 bit. Windows stores 32 bit legacy programs files in the program Files 86 folder. Having said that I think
even Office is still 32 bit.
Can someone please tell me how to check and see if I have 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10? Also if I have the Home or Professional Jaws? Thanks

Re: upgrading Jaws

Thanks

Re: Repeat that, please?
Hi Mark,
There might be another way to do what you want, but the first thing that comes to mind is to use JAWS speech history. To do that hold down the JWS key and then press the spacebar. Release both keys. Press the letter h. You will be able to see the last bunch of--I think it is 50--utterances that JAWS has made. I am pretty sure it includes everything including the tutor messages.
When you are done, press escape, and you will go back to where you were.
I hope that helps!
Happy holidays! Take care and stay safe!

hmm... I think there might be a keystroke to repeat the just the tutor message but not sure what it might be. as for the other things you want repeated, I don't know. maybe someone else might know. sorry for not being of much help.

Is there a way to get JAWS to just repeat the content type, content state, content attributes, label, or the instructions? The purpose would be to support close study and familiarization with an interface element.

I primarily use spacebar regardless of what JAWS might say, and enter only if the spacebar doesn't work.

I was wondering why in the JAWS 2020 and 2021 version the screen reader is announcing "to activate press enter" on buttons. It was spacebar for years and just curious for the change?
