yeah have fiddled with narrator and windows 10.   now that I have figured out how to stop windows from ducking audio might work a bit with narrator.  since neither jaws or NVDA don't work with edge.  also guess jaws no longer notifies you about the new FS cast.

Hi, Tom. Is there any way you can save the document instead of reading it online? Often you can tab to the link with Firefox, do a Save Link As, and save the pdf. Maybe if you read it with Adobe Reader or another pdf viewer, it will be rendered in a more acceptable manner.

When I do insert T, I just get the title of the news letter, followed by Mozilla Firefox.

I’m beginning to wonder if it is something with the document.

I tried opening the link  with Internet Explorer 11, and couldn’t get beyond the Open parent document window.

When I hit enter or the spacebar on that window, Jaws says page 1, but I can’t seem to advance from there.

Hi, Tom. What application is reading the pdf document? If it is being rendered by something other than Firefox, You may need to open the pdf, and turn off element attributes in the application which is rendering the pdf document. I can't tell you how to do this, since I don't know what application is being used to read the pdf. Also, I probably don't have that application anyway.

Hello, everyone.

I have received news letters from this organization before, and have not had this problem.

Is there something I can do to turn this “clickable” announcement off, or could it be something in the way the news letter was sent and formatted?

I’m using Jaws 17, Windows 7, and Firefox as my main internet browser.

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Windows 10, JAWS 17 and sluggishness

Hi John,

I agree, when I upgraded my laptop which is almost 5 years old the experience was quite poor, I then did a complete fresh install and it improved by 100% and I had few issues since. The good thing is that once you upgrade a computer via the upgrade option you can then do a fresh install even if you don't have a Windows Key and it should activate just fine.

I had similar issues and ended up doing a clean install of Windows 10 which helped a lot. It's a big job as it means reinstalling all your programs and potentially some drivers so not to be taken lightly. Having said that although Internet Explorer 11 is working better it still freezes and crashes from time to time. One day I'll get around to installing another browser.
That's certainly a less drastic step than reinstalling Windows 10 (smiles).

Hi,
I'm first off having trouble learning Windows 10, made worse by the recent upgrade that changed several things I was doing, but my computer and JAWS often seems very slow in responding. In particular, I'm having trouble getting JAWS to stay talking or in some cases with IE 11 to be able to use the JAWS cursor at all.

I know this is a little vague, well, maybe a lot, but I'm not sure what specific question to ask because I don't really know what's causing these issues. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get JAWS to work more consistently and get rid of some of the stuff running in the background? And what should I get rid of?

I've only recently upgraded to it so any help would be appreciated.

Re: Numbers in JAWS 17

Not sure about Word 2013, but I just typed a sentence with the number 17 in it in Word 2016 and I am using Jaws 17 and it read it as "1" and "7" when I went over it character by character, when I did a say line it read it as "17" and when I did a say word it is the same, no issues here with that. Have you checked with FS tech support?

Subject: Numbers in JAWS 17

I’ve had numerous problems with JAWS 17, and perhaps I should repair or install again, but that is so much trouble, given our firm’s data security paranoia, I may wait until JAWS 18.

Perhaps, however, JAWS 17 can be salvaged (JAWS 16 crashes Outlook 2013 routinely when an up-arrow or down-arrow hits the end of a message).

Here is what’s driving me nuts.

Whenever, navigating the cursor by character, I encounter a number, JAWS says the number, but then follows it with a 4 digit number that has no relevance that I can figure out.

For instance the number 17 should sound like seventeen or one seven, if navigated by character.

In MS Word 2013, however, 17 comes out like 1 7465 followed by 7 7465.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out where the 7465 is coming from.  Any ideas?

I’ve never seen this before.

Re: jaws 18 release?

Hi Ken,

You may want to listen to Jonathan's most recent FS Cast where he is talking to Eric Demry from Freedom Scientific about what is new in Jaws 18. Also, another Podcast you would want to check out is one on Blind Cool Tech where I think it was James Oats demonstrates Windows 10 Anniversary update and the Edge browser with Windows Narrator. Narrator is becoming a more mature screenreader and apparently you can use Edge with it with some efficiency although I haven't tried it yet. According to the Podcast NVDA is going to release an update in October which works quite well with Edge but Jaws is still having problems getting it to work and it is my understanding that this is not a major new feature in Jaws 18. In fact, Jaws 18 is probably one of the least impressive updates in my view so far. As far as running the beta I would definitely encourage you to try it because I find Jaws betas by the time they become betas usually work pretty well and the nice thing is that you are not limited to Jaws 18 Beta. If you are running Jaws 17 or 16 you can install the beta without ill effect and if you find something doesn't work as expected you can simply unload the Beta with Insert+F4 and use whatever hot key you may setup to load your previous version of Jaws. It's not like running the beta of an operating system where it's all or nothing.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi list, a question.  looking on the FS website I saw that the public beta of jaws 18 is available.  I usually don’t download a beta version, does anyone on list know when the final version of 18 is coming out?  also for anyone who has downloaded that beta, how well does it work with the edge browser and the windows 10 mail app and groove music?

Re: How To Stop Jaws From Saying Clickable At The End Of Every Line In A PDF Document

Carolyn Arnold <4carolyna@...>

I realized that he meant JAWS Settings Center.

Eventually, I just called Microsoft Disability, and she at least extricated Internet Explorer from Firefox, as when I opened IE, I was getting Firefox. She proceeded to tell me that Firefox was not a Microsoft product, but I told her that I realized that. However, I told her that Edge was not accessible, and as far as Edge was to me, it would be like for her to go on the net, but that any time she was on it, her monitor went out, would not work; therefore, she could not do anything. She said she'd submit a report, and that it had been brought to her attention before.

Bye for now,

Carolyn

Bill,

I presume that "Open Firefox" step should either be "Open Firefox then open JAWS settings" or just "Open JAWS settings." The things described after "Open Firefox" are not a part of the Firefox options and Firefox does not have a settings center.

This threw me for a loop for a few moments when I was reading it.

Ok, Bill. .. Now, I’m the one having communication problems.

I meant Jaws key plus 6, but said shift.

No, It's JAWS Key plus six, not Shift plus six. JAWS Key is either INSERT, or it's the CAPS Key, depending upon if you're using Desktop Keyboard layout in JAWS, or if you're using Laptop Keyboard Layout in JAWS. If you're using Laptop Keyboard Layout, it's CAPSLOCK plus six.

No problem, Bill.

To open the settings center in Jaws, it’s shift, followed by the number 6, correct?

Maybe this kind of thing does the brain good sometimes, since it forces you to remember things that have slid into the back recesses of your mind.

In

Under

Hello, everyone.

I just received a faculty Emeriti news letter from my University.  The letter is accessed via a link that was included in an e-mail.

I can open the news letter with no problem, but when I start reading it, Jaws says clickable at the end of every line.

Obviously, this makes for an anoying reading experience.
