did you open the default settings center when checking the language?
also open the settings center while your program is running and check the language again.
this would load the setting center configuration for the program you are running. each program has its own configuration.

Can someone tell me how to close a single tab in firefox? There are times when I want to close a tab (to reduce clutter) but leave others open. Right now I get a warning that says I am about to close ## of tabs, but it seems to be an all or nothing.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Having challenge with Character count in microsoft office

One of the things being overlooked with all of the non-program-standard keystrokes is that they are probably screen reader specific and that throws a monkey wrench into everything if you ever have to change screen readers, even temporarily.

You're far better off using the program's, and in this case that's MS-Word, built-in keyboard shortcuts to get what you want.   That will almost never change at this point since the ribbons have been stable for some time now for the most part, and what's changed has been additions, not reassignment of existing shortcuts.

ALT+R, followed by W is always going to get the Word Count dialog for you, at least from Word 2010 forward.

Re: Having challenge with Character count in Microsoft office

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

The keystroke, Control, Shift, + G, is supposed to give the character count plus more information.  The keystroke, Jaws Key + Pagedown, should read the status line, & if configured correctly the status line should read this.  Here are steps on how to customize the status line to read out exactly what you want.

To show number of lines, line number, or many other options  in the status bar in Word try the following:
1. Press F6 until Status bar is highlighted.  Or, until you hear Jaws report, Status Toolbar.  It should be the 2nd press of the F6 key.
2. Press Shift + F10 to show options.  This keystroke must be used because a right mouse click or pressing the application key will not.
3. Down arrow through the available options, and when you have found line count or something else of interest press the spacebar to check or uncheck
the item.
4. when done making modifications simply press AltF4 or escape key.
5. Review your status line to insure the settings have been properly modified.

Apparently, somewhere out there, there is also a classic menu that you can install so the menu looks like the older, more user friendly, menu system.  That was referred to with a Google search.

For all those talking about word count, the original question was about "character count" as the subject line says, not word count.

Just wanted to make sure we are all on the same page.

In Word 2016, one method that works for me is hit alt+q which brings up the help edit box, type character count and hit enter.
You will get page count, page number, word count, character count without spaces and character count with spaces, ...

Apparently, somewhere out there, there is also a classic menu that you can install so the menu looks like the older, more user friendly, menu system. That was referred to with a Google search.

Richard

Is it available from the proofing menu? Seems as if I recall, but it's been a while. Doing book reviews, and other publications, often requires an accurate word count, but Medicaid is seldom that exacting. Bureaucratic writing and literary style are usually mutually exclusive.

Hi Adekoya ,

I tried it just for fun, although I seldom need to know the character count. Well, I'm running JAWS 18 and Windows 7. It didn't work for me either. In fact, with Windows 7, and Word 2016, I got something screwy when I tried the first suggestion of control plus shift plus l.
Maybe you are all talking about Windows 10, which I hope I never have to learn. (LOL)

I only put my 2 cents in to validate your dilemma.

Hi Carolyn and Mario,

I still encounter this same challenge even after pressing alt r and w.
I will try to install later version of Jaws 18 to see if I will still
encounter same experience.

Thank.

Dear Tech enthusiast,
I am currently having challenge to count characters in Microsoft office
2016. before in office 2007, I use control+shift+G but in word 2016, if I
press it, the jaws goes silent and most time, it hang. I use window 8.1 but
I try it as well on my window 7 laptop, same happen. Using f6 to move to the
status bar or insert page down only tell me the number of words not
characters.
Any help. Is it jaws that's hanging? or any other key stroke to do this.

Best.
