Thanks Mario, Being that I'm using Thunderbird, shift tab is easier.

I see you're in Thunderbird, so it could be that what works in Outlook won't work in JAWS. I can press Insert Key and 8 on the Num Lock Pad, and it will read the message highlighted and say like 2 out of 5.

Best from,

Carolyn

I am new to jaws. While in Thunderbird, what key combination is use to find out how many messages are in any particular folder? Thanks in advance.

Re: amount of messages

Carolyn Arnold <4carolyna@...>

Press the Insert Key on the Num Lock and the Page Down or 3 on the Num Pad. It should read the number of messages in a specific mail box. Mine did not do that at first, but when Microsoft Disabilities addressed a problem I had, they fixed that without me even mentioning the issue. I was really glad.

Hi,

I have found that the best way for me to get the information you are asking for is to highlight the folder you want and then use the touch cursor to read the information.

First, start the touch cursor by pressing shift plus the numpad plus key.
Go to the bottom of the screen by pressing control plus end.
Now, use your left arrow and move back until you read all of the information you want. You may need to move as much as four or five times to get all information.
When finished, press the numpad plus twice (quickly) to get back to standard mode.

With the new JAWS 2018, pressing insert num pad 3 reads the number of messages in each folder. It does not work in JAWS 18. It got broken somewhere along the way.

Re: Web Browser Accessibility And A Keyboard Shortcut Related Questions And Vocalizer Expressive

Jason White

JAWS works well with Chrome, for the most part. Insert+F7 will work with
whichever browser you use. Vocalizer Expressive is a product of Nuance. It's
used by Apple, Freedom Scientific/VFO and others in various products.
However, the Alex voice from Apple is not part of Vocalizer Expressive and
does not appear to be available anywhere other than on Apple's devices.

Hi there everyone. My name is Owais and I'm new to this list have some
questions regarding the topics mentioned in the Subject Line. I don't have
Jaws but will be getting it quite soon. Last time I tried Jaws with Internet
Explorer I loved it. Never have tried it with Firefox or Chrome. My prefered
Browser that I've used the most is Chrome. What's the level of accessibility
Jaws has with Chrome? When I tried Jaws with Internet Explorer I found that
there's a Keystroke which is Insert+F7 to bring up the list of links. Is
this shortcut for Ie only or is it for other Browsers as well? Lastly I
heard that in Jaws 18 Freedom Scientific added a new Vocalizer. I heard it
has a lot of Apple Voices. If that's true does it have Alex from iOs. I kind
of found Microsoft David similar to Alex but it's quite laggy is what I
find.
Sincerely,
Owais

What you do is the following.

1. Open Firefox.
2. Press ALT plus T for Tools.
3. Press O for Options.
4. Tab until you hear, Find an Option.
5. In the edit box, type Update.
6. Tab until you hear how Firefox is currently updating. It will probably
say, Automatically Install Updates.
7. Down Arrow to, Never Check For Updates. It will say (not recommended) 8.
Tab to, Use a background service to Install Updates, and make sure this is
unchecked.
9. Press CONTROL plus W to close the Options window.

Firefox will now no longer update itself.

Firefox 57 also named "quantum" is getting a new rendering engine which
replaces Gecko. It is supposed to be twice as fast.
Apparently this will also have screen reader implications I assume
especially where they do not use the accessibility API and instead access
the page directly... Time will tell but when changing engines, it will not
surprise me to see a lot of stuff break.

According to the latest JAWS release notes, most of JAWS versions will stop
working with Firefox 57 and newer. I had not seen any reference to this
before. Can anybody provide details? Are there any scripting implications
for this? I just started getting a Get*XML set of routines working with an
Internet application I am forced to deal with on a daily basis.

Re: did butterfingers ken turn something on?

Hi Ken,

Is your problem resolved with volume?  If not, while in your program with the low volume, press insert plus r and type in "sndvol: (without the quotes) and press enter.  Tab through your settings that are listed.  For each program that is open, there will be a list of available volume levels and the screen reader should read each level and the program it is for.  As you up arrow through the list that matches the quiet program, the volume level should increase.

Hi listers ken here. I noticed my system sounds and even pandora were both extremely soft. I tested to make sure pandor’s volume was maxed and still very low. then when jaws 40 minute mode was about to expire and I shut it down to switch to NVDA suddenly pandora sounded right.  did I turn on audio ducking by accident and how do I shut that off in settings center? is it a toggle pretty sure butterfingers ken did it by accident.

Insert + space +d. This is the toggle for audio ducking. Hope this helps.

Re: repeating my question.

Somebody already replied and said what you need to do: use the layered keystroke Jaws Key+Space bar followed by “d”.

If Jaws says “Do not duck other audio” then audio ducking was on and for me it does indeed result in a noticeable drop in sound volume as the feature is not working correctly.

I can then change the way messages are sorted.  I get the choices  date, from, to etc.

On my home computer with either version of jaws this does not work.  I can press alt, then v, but can’t sort by name or date.  Any ideas?
