OT: NVDA and Touch Screens

Andre

I was wondering about NVDA and touch screens. I have to help my son access ABC Mouse on a pc running Windows 10 (fall creators). It seems like something has changed. Maybe not though. Basically my question is:

Is it possible to keep NVDA running (for me) and still allow him to just use the regular touch screen gestures? For instance, when I have him on YouTube and I’m running NVDA so I can choose what I want him to watch, he can’t just tap on play/pause and have it play or pause the video. I have to completely quit NVDA. After doing a Google search, I tried the sleep mode, but that didn’t seem to work either. So are there any addons I can get to negate the nvda touch gestures, etc.?

Hopefully you understand what I’m asking. If not, please let me know. By the way, I’m no NVDA expert either. I know he can just touch the screen when I’m running Window-Eyes, but my browse mode feature disappeared and that was WE 9.5.4. I’m trying NVDA 2017.3. I think that’s what it’s called. So is there a way to keep NVDA running and turn off its touch support? I figure if I can do that, then that will kind of simulate Window-Eyes’ browse mode.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Additional Note Regarding Outlook Crashing When Entering E-mail Addresses Into A Blank E-mail

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

Yesterday, you may recall that I was told by Freedom Scientific Tech Support that the best way to solve the issue of Outlook Crashing when entering addresses into the “to” field of a new e-mail message was to put Outlook in safe mode.

This is continuing to work for me, although I must add that if you shut your computer down for any reason, you will have to go back into Outlook and put it back into safe mode once you have re-booted.

Apparently, the safe mode setting isn’t saved, as I have just discovered.

Re: excel formula

Ann Byrne

I think it should be:
sum(b20:b32)

Alt= is good if there are no blank cells; but it stops summing at a blank so I prefer to specify what I want.

Good luck!

arMark,
Drop the 00 and replace the brackets with parentheses, and your formula should work fine.

You can always go back and press F2 and review it afterwards or, if you want to say put the sum in A1 but the range you want to sum up is from B10 to B20 then just type Alt+= followed by B10:b20 and press enter.

Hi good people:
I joined the group not too long ago, but I've not been posting.
I sent a post two days ago, wanting to know if anyone had solutions to the problem I am having with my web browser firefox and JAWS. From the responses I read to other people's posts, I learnt that the problem is a general problem. It is a problem that appears to defy solutions for now.
I have new issues, which I will like fellow members to please kindly help me address.
I am having problems with screenshots. When I do a screenshot of a web page using the print screen key on my laptop, and copy and paste it into the pint submenu, and subsequently send it, I am informed by the receipient that the screenshot is not visible. I've tried it several times, and the problem remains the same. I use firefox with it. I also use JAWS 16.
Please how can I fix this problem of screenshots not being visible.
What can I do to make the screenshots visible.
Added to this, does anyone use snagit from techsmith? how is it used to do a screenshot of a webpage.
Looking forward to reading from you chaps.

Re: problems With My JFW screenreader

Hi Ibrahim,

Can you let us know what version of Windows and what version of Firefox you are using? There are issues with the latest version of Firefox which is version 57 and which is also called Firefox Quantum.
If you are using the demo version of Jaws, you might want to consider downloading Jaws 2018 or at least Jaws 18, bboth of these versions work well with Google Chrome and I have now made this my default browser because it is fast and works well in most situations.
Lastly, have you heard of NVDA (Non Visual Desktop Access)? It is a free screenreader and once you learn how to use it you might find it does all you want, here the link to the NV Access website and some information from their website:
https://www.nvaccess.org

NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free “screen reader” which enables blind and vision impaired people to use computers. It reads the text on the screen in a computerised voice. You can control what is read to you by moving the cursor to the relevant area of text with a mouse or the arrows on your keyboard.
NVDA can also convert the text into braille if the computer user owns a device called a “braille display”.
NVDA provides the key to education and employment for many blind people. It also provides access to social networking, online shopping, banking and news.
NVDA works with Microsoft Windows. You can download it to your PC, or to a USB stick which you can use with any computer.
Normally screen readers are expensive, making them unaffordable for many blind people. NVDA is free. It’s been downloaded 70,000+ times, in 43 languages.

HI good people:
I am having problems with my JAWS screen reader. The problem started not too long ago. I find it difficult using the screen reader on Mozilla firefox. Often times when I am browsing, sometimes going through my gmail inbox, the screen reader crashes suddenly, and stops work for some time only to resume after some time. Some times, when I want to open a website, the screnreader crashes, shuts down the screen reader, and could even distort the functioning of the computer itself.
Secondly, when I do a screenshot of a webpage with the print screen key, i am told when I send it down, that the screenshot is not visible.
Please has anyone ever had any of these problems? if yes how did you go aboutsolving it. What is the solution.
I use JAWS 16.1.4448, a demo version.
I am from Africa, and I cannot afford the hundreds of Dollars that the screen reader costs.
Looking forward to reading a response.

Jaws Stops Reading Word 2016 Document

Ed Culpepper

Fellow Jawboners –

When attempting to write, read, or edit a document with MS Word 2016 Jaws 18 will stop reading as I use arrow keys to move through the text. I recently updated to Word 2016 from Word 2007. I did not have this problem with Word 2007. I am relatively new to using Jaws, having migrated from the trustworthy screen reader I had used for decades. Does anyone have an idea of what is causing Jaws to go silent or to read only intermittent characters with Word 2016? Do I need to alter some settings in order for Jaws 18 to read reliably with Word 2016? I have not yet updated to Jaws 2018. Will that update solve this problem?

Many thanks –

Hello, everyone.

I wanted to let you know that my Outlook 2016 address entry issue which was causing Outlook to crash has been resolved, at least for now.

I worked with Corrie from FS Support, and they are aware of the issue.

The temporary work-around is to run Outlook in safe mode.

Here are the steps for doing this:

1.  If you are in Outlook, close the program.

2.  Then, press windows R to go to the run dialog prompt.

3.  Type in outlook.exe followed by a space, and then /safe  and hit enter.

4.  Then, exit out of Outlook and go back again, and everything should function normally.

I’m not totally sure what safe mode is, but Corrie said it has something to do with eliminating add-ins that are active when Outlook is running normally.

I also asked Corrie about the problem I’m having with being unable to navigate entries in an Outlook e-mail group via the arrow keys, and he said that FS is aware of that issue as well.

He indicated that we should all stand by for future Jaws updates that will be aimed at correcting these issues.

The compatibility issues with Jaws and screen readers with Firefox 57 has been mentioned ad nauseam for roughly the last month. There have been blog postings from VFO and other accessibility sites in addition to what's been discussed on lists such as this regarding the expected challenges with this particular version of FF.
Some are reporting no issues with it, but in general, as has been repeatedly suggested, either stick with version 56.x with updates disabled or switch to the ESR version of Firefox for now.
