Re: Making a note in excel

Hi Steve,

Perfect, that works, would be nice if Jaws actually read what’s in there, still something for FS to look at and hopefully fix.

Sieghard,

Here's a suggestion for eliminating the speaking of your name along with comments...

In Excel you designate your name or initials to be used in such comments or giving creation credit. I think it's in the Options/General. Instead of your name or initials, use some other variant of your name that you recognize, but don't use anywhere else. Then try putting that variant into the dictionary manager for Excel and other Office applications to speak nothing.
Let me know if that works.

Hi Mario,

Thanks, that does work, however, it reads my name each time before it reads
the comment. I guess that is because I am the author of the comment. I'll
have to get in touch with Jaws and ask them to fix this or to add a setting
where this can be turned on or off. I can see how in a company where
multiple people edit an Excel sheet this is useful, but I just want to hear
the comment and I'm sure for most private users or those like me who have a
small business would prefer just to hear the comment and nothing else.

Hi Dave and Richard,

This is useful although if I go to Insert Comment and type something
pressing enter doesn't do anything and neither does tab, I have to press
escape first before I can navigate to a different cell, then if I go back it
will say the cell content along with "includes comment.

The Control+Shift+Apostrophy also works great, but it would be really nice
if Jaws could be made to speak the comment after the cell content, e.g. it
would say "2" or whatever value is in the cell and then
"Comment: Number of items in stock" or something along those lines.

This would allow you to still perform calculations including the value of
that cell but to have some more useful information, e.g. I could have the
names of products in column A and across the top I could have sizes and
maybe for this particular order some sizes are "In Stock" and some are
"Backordered". I have received Excel sheets where the person who made that
sheet colour coded this and then provided a legend as to what colour means
what, but it would be nice to be able to add a comment which Jaws then reads
automatically instead of having to check the colour of the cell content.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is possible, if anybody knows maybe they can
share it. If indeed it is not possible then I think FS should add this
functionality.

Laura,

To answer your last question, leaving your laptop on for several days and nights should not hurt the laptop. However, when you are not using it, I recommend you put it in stand-by mode to not drain the battery. In most laptops, this happens automatically by default if you have not done anything with it for five or ten minutes. However, you should also be able to lock it manually by pressing Windows l and closing the lid when JAWS announces that you are at the “lock screen.”

Good luck installing the update.

You can press the windows key and type updates in the edit field, and it should show check for updates in settings, and press enter. Mine is up to date so I could not proceed further, but I think you will get further instructions, on how to complete your pending update.

Also sometimes when I shut down my computer starting it up again causes me to go through a bunch of stuff in the ease of access center, so I go to the desktop, alt D, press alt F4, and arrow up to sleep, to avoid a full start up.

The last two times I’ve had problems when turning on my computer.  When I turn it on I can’t get Jaws to speak.  I’ve had to hold down the power button to turn the computer off.  When I turn it back on Jaws tells me that Windows couldn’t complete an update.  I press alt +F4 and that message goes away and I’m able to use the computer.  Since this has happened twice in the last two days.  I have left my computer on since yesterday for fear of not being able to use it.  I live alone and don’t have sighted help readily available and my independence is entirely reliant upon this one machine …… My ability to read mail, pay bills, send or receive emails, etc.  I don’t know how and have never updated anything without sighted help.  Today after I had been away from the computer for a short bit Jaws said “Important Windows update notification”.

How do I find out what the notifications say?  If I need to update something regarding Windows, should I call MS disability for help or is that something I can do myself without fear of not being able to use the computer if Jaws won’t speak?  Also, will it hurt anything to leave the computer on for days at a time?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Laura,

You can press the windows key and type updates in the edit field, and it should show check for updates in settings, and press enter. Mine is up to date so I could not proceed further, but I think you will get further instructions, on how to complete your pending update.

Also sometimes when I shut down my computer starting it up again causes me to go through a bunch of stuff in the ease of access center, so I go to the desktop, alt D, press alt F4, and arrow up to sleep, to avoid a full start up.

Cheers

I see an alt+shift+Apostrophe to make JAWS read a cell comment, but no
keystroke to have JAWS do what you suggest. when you hear that a cell
has a comment, alt+shift+apostrophe should read the comment.

Hi Dave and Richard,

This is useful although if I go to Insert Comment and type something
pressing enter doesn’t do anything and neither does tab, I have to press
escape first before I can navigate to a different cell, then if I go
back it will say the cell content along with “includes comment.

The Control+Shift+Apostrophy also works great, but it would be really
nice if Jaws could be made to speak the comment after the cell content,
e.g. it would say “2” or whatever value is in the cell and then
“Comment: Number of items in stock” or something along those lines.

This would allow you to still perform calculations including the value
of that cell but to have some more useful information, e.g. I could have
the names of products in column A and across the top I could have sizes
and maybe for this particular order some sizes are “In Stock” and some
are “Backordered”. I have received Excel sheets where the person who
made that sheet colour coded this and then provided a legend as to what
colour means what, but it would be nice to be able to add a comment
which Jaws then reads automatically instead of having to check the
colour of the cell content.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is possible, if anybody knows maybe they
can share it. If indeed it is not possible then I think FS should add
this functionality.

Dave’s write, if you use the application key you can arrow to insert
comment and hit enter.

Type your comment and hit enter.

Then, I believe you can tab to the next cell or arrow down, etc.

To bring up a list of cells with comments, its control+shift+apostrophe.

the below is correct, and also if the mouse is hovered over that little red indication a tooltip pops up displaying the contents of the note to a sighted user.

To the sighted I think it just shows a little red triangle to click on to read it, and has no affect on the workings of the spread sheet.

Re: Jaws problems with large tables

GV-Knope, John (Greenville)

Good morning,

I am using JAWS 2018; Win 10; Office 2016; Avira Antivirus

Reading tables in email may be sluggush due to antivirus or malware software packages.

This question gave me a reason to explore the JAWS key shortcut feature help.  I use tables, but needed to explore how table reading has changed in recent versions of JaWS.

To search for JAWS commands:

Press JaWS key + SPACE to enter layered commands

Press J to open JAWS command help

Type table to search for table commands

Use reading commands to explore the various table reading commands in the table layer

FS has expanded the table layer commands significantly since I first started using them.  I encourage anyone who works with tables to review the help commands as time permits.

Same specifications here as well same outcome. The table supplied I was able to navigate down through with no apparent sluggishness  or degradation  in performance. Jaws is a strange animal as it can react very differently on different systems for the same configuration. I have some similar issues with mine not related to this problem, Very frustrating

I just tried navigating the sample tables you posted, and I did not encounter any sluggishness. Like you, I use Windows 10, JAWS 2018, and Office 2016.

If all else fails, I recommend repairing your JAWS installation. This often resolves strange behavior. For me, for example, it once helped restore Convenient OCR. Good luck!

Have you tried different browsers to read the tables, or possibly different email clients if these things are coming to you via email? Just trying to think of things that might be slowing things down on your end.

Hello list,

So, I’ve been having problems with Jaws and large tables. As part of my business, I work with one vendor that sends out assignments via email to bid on. Jaws will often get sluggish or pause for a few seconds as I arrow down the columns and will frequently crash outright. It’s become so much of an issue that I’ve started to switch to NVDA when receiving one of these emails. I find myself even having to go into the task manager at times to kill any JFW processes in order to get Jaws back.

I’m currently on the latest JFW 2018, but these issues were also present in earlier versions of JFW 2018 as well as JFW 18. I’m using Outlook 2016 on a Windows 10 desktop. This sluggishness also happens when I access the same emails on my laptop with the same operating specs.

I use both eloquence with Jaws and NVDA. Again, NVDA seems to handle these tables fine.

I reached out to Freedom Scientific with my problem and they wrote back saying that they couldn’t reproduce my issue. So…

I was wondering if others were perhaps having similar problems with tables and Jaws? I’ll go ahead and paste a sample email I get below.

Any input would be appreciated.

Yes, it does, and no it does not affect any of the formula or processing.

Does the comment then exist along wigth the numeric datum or formula?  Does it have any effect on the processing of the datum?

Hi Brian,

Dave’s write, if you use the application key you can arrow to insert comment and hit enter.

Type your comment and hit enter.

Then, I believe you can tab to the next cell or arrow down, etc.

To bring up a list of cells with comments, its control+shift+apostrophe.

I do not know if there is a setting to have Jaws automatically read the comments.

HTH,

Richard

Excel not only has data but occasionally one needs to make a note about the data. How would I do this in excel?

Dave...

I'm thinking that comments can be made to speak, but perhaps they need to be enabled in the Excel options?

Hi Dave and Richard,

This is useful although if I go to Insert Comment and type something pressing enter doesn’t do anything and neither does tab, I have to press escape first before I can navigate to a different cell, then if I go back it will say the cell content along with “includes comment.

The Control+Shift+Apostrophy also works great, but it would be really nice if Jaws could be made to speak the comment after the cell content, e.g. it would say “2” or whatever value is in the cell and then “Comment: Number of items in stock” or something along those lines.

This would allow you to still perform calculations including the value of that cell but to have some more useful information, e.g. I could have the names of products in column A and across the top I could have sizes and maybe for this particular order some sizes are “In Stock” and some are “Backordered”. I have received Excel sheets where the person who made that sheet colour coded this and then provided a legend as to what colour means what, but it would be nice to be able to add a comment which Jaws then reads automatically instead of having to check the colour of the cell content.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is possible, if anybody knows maybe they can share it. If indeed it is not possible then I think FS should add this functionality.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: Making a note in excel

Michal Nowicki

Hi Guys,

The reason Tab and Enter do not get you back into the spreadsheet is that in Office applications, comments, like headers and footers (including page numbers), appear in a separate pane.

As far as I know, there is no way to get JAWS to read comments automatically in Excel. Since there are ways to do this in Word, I find this surprising.
