Re: Desktop & Windows 10

Mike and Mario,

I do not think that you can boot directly into Windows 10 like you could in Windows 7 and earlier versions. Microsoft is so concerned with security that it does not matter if you use a home or professional version. You still have to click through the lock screen to get the sign in screen. After you enter your password, you focus on the desktop.
Until you mentioned it, I had not noticed that the desktop is not in the tab order. I like being able to focus running programs with ALT+TAB. When I need to focus the desktop, I use WINDOWS+D.

John

Mike, from a note I saved from some discussion somewhere (I'm not sure if it still applies to the Fall Creators update):

if you want your windows 10 to load directly on to the desktop,

you need to go into, ctrl panel and taskbar properties.

now, go to navigation and tab until you hear "When I sign in, go to the Desktop instead of the Start Screen".

this box needs to be checked.

did this work?

Hi John!

I got my neighbour to turn the touchpad off because i kept brushing it with my sleeve and things were going all over the place.

Since then, i've found out how to do this myself.

You can get the directions by searching www.hp.com.

What is currently happening is that the fN key works like a modifier key. For example, you press SHIFT+1 to get an exclamation mark (!). HP has the idea that it is helpful to us the function keys to do things like turn on and off wireless and project to a display. These are tasks that we do not do frequently. Once someone switch the setting for you, you will still be able to use these options by pressing fN + the function key assignment.

I have used HP, Acer, and Dell computers. I settled on the Acer laptop because I can adjust the sound volume by pressing fN + UP and Down keys. I took my machine into Best Buy for a problem that I had with my touch screen. I had a conversation with the technician when I picked up the computer.
I mentioned that brushing the touchpad slightly caused me to lose focus; he told me that I could use fN + F7 to toggle the touchpad on or off.

I had to download an application called Logitech Options in order to turn that feature off, now if I want to use the secondary functions of the function keys such as turning the volume down or up (F11 or F12) or to mute the speakers (F10) I have to press them with the FN key. Hi Val,

I would try to develop a relationship with a local vendor. Since this appears to be a new computer, any HP dealers should be able to help.

For HP models, you'll need to change this from device firmware (BIOS/UEFI). Certain makers (notably Toshiba and Lenovo) have either a program or a hotkey to set which way you want (traditional F1 to F12 or media keys).

Just as an example ( a bit different but essentially the same issue), I purchased a Logitech K780 keyboard which can be used as a bluetooth keyboard but it also has a USB dongle in case you use it with a computer that has no bluetooth. It also supports up to 3 devices and it uses F1, F2 and F3 to switch to those devices if they are set up. When I first got the keyboard the function keys would only work if pressed trogether with FN which I assume is what is happening with your laptop.
I had to download an application called Logitech Options in order to turn that feature off, now if I want to use the secondary functions of the function keys such as turning the volume down or up (F11 or F12) or to mute the speakers (F10) I have to press them with the FN key. But if I want to bring up the system tray I can just press Insert+F11 instead of having to press Insert+FN+F11.

If you don't mind using command prompt, In this VLC wiki, there is a command line script that you can easily modify to fit your need. (I believe you only need to modify input and output directory).

The good thing is that you may already have VLC installed and it's free.

Another option would be to use Linux Subsystem on Windows 10. It may take a little bit of effort in setup but afterward, only need several lines of code to to batch conversion.

If this has to be adjusted in the BIOS teamviewer wouldn't do you any good, it needs to be run once you are logged in whereas the BIOS is accessed during the startup process before Windows loads.

As urchased a new laptop, and, ofcourse, it had the latest version of
jaws and windows 10.

When I had my old computer and the last version of jaws, plus windows 7,
I used to be able to press the insert key and the F6 key to add an
address to the address bar. Also, I used to use the insert key and the
F4 to shut down Jaws.

Since getting this new laptop with windows 10 and the latest version of
Jaws, I cannot do this! When I try the insert key and the F6 it
completely cuts of the speach, and i've got to repress the F6 to put the
speach back on again.

When I try to exit jaws in the way i used to, i get a completely
different message.

Can someone tell me what you do now for both these questions.

As yet, i'm not getting on very well with the new version of windows. (

if the JAWS function keys are not turned on, but are rather used as computer function keys instead, such as volume, mute, wireless toggle, etc.

That is my first thought, try to use Insert+FN+F4, if that asks you if you want to turn off Jaws then you need to figure out based on your laptop model, how to set it up so you don't have to press the FN key together with a function key.

Sieghard
