What I have done in the past is to just take the whole settings folder
-- in my case its c:\users\<user name>\appdata\roaming\freedom
scientific\jaws\2020\settings\enu where username is your username and
put it in the same directory on your other computer or whereever you
need it to be. I have had some trouble also with the export wizard,
but what I did worked for me and I hope it works for you -- you might
want to back up the current folder in case something bad happens.

Hi,

I did it using the update wizard.

I’ve also tried downloading it via the exe file with the previous version, which, sadly, didn’t fix the issue.

When you updated to this latest version of J2020, did you download and run the installer from your computer, or did you download and install using the Jaws update wizard?

Hi,

I sincerely apologize if I’m not supposed to send this to multiple people, but I’d really like to get this solved.

With the June update, which was released today, the settings export wizard still crashes.

Can anyone uncover the mystery, as to why this would be?

What happens is:

  1. Go to the utilities menu, and click export settings.
  2. Leave the default option, which is to export all settings as is
  3. Press enter, which will press the “next” button

At this point, the wizard may crash.

This happens every time for me.

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi. I used to frequent a lyrics site called Genius.com. Lately, when I go to the website, and search a lyric, I click the link, and where there used to be a lyric, I now only get an edit box. Can someone go to this website and see if they can see the lyrics to any song? The song I tried was Run for your life, the beatles

Has this site become inaccessible for screen readers?

Thank you.

Extended Free Home-Use Software For Those Affected by COVID-19

First and foremost, we hope that you and your family are safe and well.

Thank you for taking advantage of the free home access of JAWS, Fusion and ZoomText. Our goal is simply to help you remain accessible as you work and study remotely. Due to Covid-19, and the impact to our customers, during Summer Schools sessions especially, we have decided to extend the expiration date on the Free June 30th software licenses to August 31, 2020. Your license will automatically be extended so there is nothing extra for you to do.

As many people have requested to continue using the product past the August 31st expiration, we are offering a 20% discount to anyone in the United States to extend their Home Annual License if you purchase your renewal before July 31st. All you need to do to take advantage of this offer is to go into the software portal prior to July 31st and choose the Renewal Option and select 1, 3, or 5 years for the Home Annual license of that product and the renewal time will begin after the August 31st date.

Hi again, Jessica. One thing you might want to try is the following,

Turn off your antivirus, perform the export of JAWS settings, see if it crashes, then turn on your antivirus again. Sometimes a system will act badly with software in certain situations, and this may be one of them. The same thing may be true concerning the new Avoid sound card clipping setting in JAWS.

I am a bit surprised that FS doesn't include previous builds of a particular version of JAWS on their Web site for people who feel the need to revert to a previous build within the same release cycle. While they do have previous versions this only gives you the last version for a particular release.

I just updated Jaws 2020 to the June update on my laptop. When I tried to activate the new Avoid Silence feature it crashes instantly and repeatedly. Now it won’t load for more than a few seconds before crashing. I just removed it and have gone back to the last 2019 version. Is there a way to find and install the version from April? I mean the one that didn’t break email conversion handling in Outlook.

Turning off speaking comments in JAWS does not affect the document; just what JAWS tells you about it. You can turn reading of comments back on at any time and everything will still be there.

Hello, I have an editor working on a book I wrote. They have comments on. Is there a way to turn off comments that the editor put in the book? Once turned off does that loose the comments all together? Or if I turn it back on will the comments come back? The reason I'm asking is I don't want to here 'comment' at the beginning of a comment and then at the end of it. Yet I want to be able to turn it back on so I can get the next comment and see what it is refering to in the document. Thanks, Kevin

moderated attempting settings export still crashes wizard, with June update

Thanks,

Jessica

Yes, that’s what I’m talking about

Go to the messenger website. There is a direct link to the microsft store where the app can be downloaded. You can probably do a search at the store itself too but the last time I tried that, I couldn’t seem to get the right result to come up/activate so I think going through the web is preferrable, but it’s up to you.

Anyway, once you click “get”, the software will install. Once tha’ts done I open windows search and start typing in “messenger”. It will come up and you can work with it from there.

So that you don't have to go to the messenger web site to use it.

And if so where do you go to get it and what is the best way to install it?

It has buttons to audio or video call people on your list. Not sure if there’s a way to do this from within browser or not…

Anyone:

I looked up the instructions about how to video chat with a friend on Facebook.  The first thing it says is “Click in the upper right of the screen.”  Is there any way using JAWS that you can video chat with someone?

Unfortunately my office doesn't have control over how these get printed, so I doubt I can change that. I also don't have Kurzweil 1000 on my work computer; I just have Abbyy FineReader. I've tried to look for an option to disable column identification, but haven't found it.

Kelby,

I'm doubtful there is anything JAWS can do to make your document more
readable. It sounds as if whoever created the document was using Microsoft
Word to number the lines and when they saved it as a PDF file, the line
numbers were treated as a separate object from the text and placed at the
beginning of the created PDF instead of left next to their corresponding
text lines. I think you should talk to the creator of the documents and ask
them to try printing as PDF instead of saving or exporting as PDF to see if
that creates the desired results.

In my work, I frequently have to read transcripts of proceeding where each
of the lines is numbered. When I open a transcript like this in Adobe,
frequently all of the line numbers will be at the top of the page and I have
to keep arrowing down to get to the text. I know this is a unique problem,
but is there anything JAWS can do that will help with this? Right now it
takes me longer to read these documents than it should.

I did try this, but got the same results no matter what reading option I chose.
