Re: Width of cell in Excel
Brian,

How much text will fit in a cell depends on the width of the column in which the cell resides. I don't believe Excel allows setting the width of individual cells. How text which takes more space than the width of its column appears will depend on what the cell to its immediate right has in it. If that cell is blank, the too wide text will spill over and display in the adjacent cell. If the adjacent cell is not blank, the too wide text will be cut off and not displayed even though it is still in the cell. You can change the format of individual cells to set them to wrap text when the text they contain is too wide to fit in the width of their column. This will cause the row they are in to expand in height in order to display the wrapped text. To do this, place focus in the cell you wish to have the text wrapped or select an entire column or a group of cells for which you want to wrap text and then: 1. Press ctrl + 1 to open the format dialog box. 2. Press ctrl + tab to move to the alignment tab in the format dialog box. 3. Press tab until you reach the wrap text checkbox and press space to check it. 4. Press tab until you reach the Ok button and press enter. Alan Lemly

If you need a wider cell in a spreadsheet an option is to merge cells and you don't have to worry about word wrap. Generally I have found that if you are using the default cells across a row, you can get eight cells in portrate mode on an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of paper.
